Combine visual elements to cre-ate a composition that describes a

mathematical ordering system. The elements used in the design will

be placed within the grid (ordering system) to create order and variation. The design should be complex, visu-

ally exciting, dynamic, non-literal, and unified. It should include ele-

ments used this quarter such as line, curve, shape, and texture. The design

should communicate the illusion of space, incorporate figure/ground

fluctuation, and should have a focal point. The total image area must work

as a harmonious unit.

Bruce Mau is a fty-two year old Canadian designer from Sudbury, Ontario. He studied at the Ontario College of Art & Design, but did not graduate and left early in order to pursue joining a design group in 1980. After working there for two years, he worked at Pentagram for a year in the UK and then returned to Toronto to pursue other design possi-bilities. He later created his own studio, Bruce Mau design. Mau has also served as creative director of I.D. magazine, as well as the design director of Zone Books. He has also made appearances at colleges such as Rice University, University of Toronto, California Institute of the Arts, and the Getty Research Institute. These appearances range from being a professor, artist, thesis advisor, and visiting scholar. Mau is also an AIGA gold medalist.

Bruce Mau's company is a design group headquartered in Toronto that works in ve main business areas: visioning; communications; environments & experience design; web and digital media; and ip, product & content development. Bruce Mau is responsible for the creation of both the book and exhibition Massive Change, which examines how design can be used as a technique to address current problems in our societal, economical and political systems. The exhibit was displayed at the Vancouver Art Gallery and the Art Gallery of Ontario for three months each,as well as the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago for over a year.

Bruce Mau Design also collaborated with designers such as David Rockwell in order to design New Meadowlands, a stadium in which both the New York Jets as well as the New York Giants reside for home games. Designing this was a great challenge, seeing as the stadium had to give a home eld advantage to both teams. A couple more impressive works that BMD worked on was the Walt Disney Concert Hall and the Seattle Public Library. They are responsible for all of the typography in the concert hall and tested over 5,000 variations in order to nd the best solution. Overall, Bruce Mau is a designer who is trying to make the world better for everyone, even the world itself.

Massive Change is not about the world of design; it’s about the design of the world. For most of us, design is invisible. Until it fails. In fact, the secret ambition of design is to become invisible.

Pattern Pattern

Create four studies that explore the concepts of pattern and texture - two

studies for each concept. Each solu-tion should fill, and be complete,

within a “field” of 5” x 5”.

Each solution should be interesting, elegant, and should exhibit a unique

visual character. To create variety, consider variables such as value,

scale, shape, density, or direction. Consider combining one or more

forms of media into a single solution.
