LINKEDIN + PORTFOLIUMA common, initial question the Portfolium team receives is how the product differs from the professional networking site LinkedIn. It’s incredibly important to first note that Portfolium and LinkedIn are not mutually exclusive networks. API integration allows for information to be sent to and from the two profiles. In fact, over 20% of Portfolium users get started by importing their LinkedIn profile information into their portfolio. After adding portfolio entries into their Portfolium, they then embed these entries directly onto their LinkedIn to enhance their profile. For this reason, many students and recent grads refer to Portfolium as an “app to enhance their LinkedIn and resume”.

TYPICAL USE-CASE SCENARIO:

A student completes a landscape architecture group project at Cal Poly. The student creates a Portfolium entry documenting this experience. This single, well-organized entry contains photos of the project at various stages of completion. It also contains a video of the team giving their final presentation, along with an embedded 3D CAD model, the powerpoint presentation that was presented, and a detailed description of the project, including the skills acquired and software used. The team members are tagged and #keywords (including hard and soft skills acquired during the project) are provided to make the entry more discoverable. The students’ professor, fellow classmates, and potential employers are able to engage with the entry with features such as commenting, liking and sharing. The student can even submit this entry directly to employers for review during an application process. Cal Poly administrators are able to embed this entry directly onto the university’s Landscape Architecture website and the team members are able to embed this entry directly onto their LinkedIn profiles.

SPECIFIC DIFFERENCES- Portfolium is an interactive e-portfolio network for students and alumni to visually showcase their work, activities, and

projects. LinkedIn is a professional networking platform to connect with others and maintain a professional online profile/resume.

- Portfolium does not charge students or alumni to access their account, access new or premium features, or stand out to employers during the application process

- Portfolium is built for cross-campus collaboration and discovery as well as self-reflection and promotion - in addition to career placement and networking. Students can connect with each other easier and do so based on proven work samples rather than resumes and/or shared connections.

- Portfolium provides partner universities with a private, branded network, showcasing exclusively the work and projects of their students - as well as an exclusive, branded subdomain - i.e. https://calpoly.portfolium.com

- Portfolium provides partner universities with admin accounts to access features such as the network announcement tool and digital resume database tool

- Portfolium provides its partner universities with faculty accounts that have the ability to “verify” students’ entries and maintain contact after course completion and graduation

- Student clubs and org groups can create group portfolios to showcase the projects and activities their club completes, which is a great marketing tool for recruiting new members, showcasing their current members, and even securing company or university sponsorship.

- Portfolium provides its users with the ability to participate in company sponsored contests/challenges where students can engage companies, win prizes, and secure prestigious internship and job opportunities
