The Career Fair provided employers achance to seek potential employees and meet other com-pany representatives in the area.

Representing Portlock Software were Amanda Badovinic,Corporate Communications Manager, and Jeff Hartwick,Marketing Manager (pictured to the right). They acceptedresumes and informed the community about PortlockSoftware. They also held on-site interviews.

CeBITCeBITCeBITCeBITCeBITCeBIT once again proved to be the largest technology show in theworld with about 32,000 exhibitor personnel and 6,500 compa-nies in attendance. Estimates for total attendance were about700,000.

Portlock was part of the Novell stand in Hall 1. To give you a bettervision of the size of this extradonary event, in 1984 Hall 1 enteredthe Guiness Book of Records as the world’s largest single-storyexhibition hall. Thirty-four partners were exhibited in the Novellstand. Portlock had a high quantity of visitors from many differentnationalities. Some were inquiring about our capabilities and oth-ers just stopped to say, “great software, it saved my life.”

Many customerswere interested in the imaging functions of PortlockStorage Manager, with a few asking specific resizingquestions. For a typical demonstration, we imaged fromthe server to an FTP server. We then deleted the vol-umes on the server, rebooted to demonstrate it failed,then rebooted from a CD. This took us into PortlockStorage Manager running under DOS. We restored thedeleted volumes from the FTP server (resizing as re-quired) and rebooted. The whole process took about 5minutes.

My goal was to create recovery options for NetWare servers in a test environment. Ihad hoped to make modifications/upgrades/installs to a server, and then restorethe box from a former image. My first test generated NICI fatal errors. Does anyoneknow if this product will work to restore a sys volume, eDirectory if a single server, orcertificate server?

You can certainly use this product as part of a DRP solution. We have done it in manyscenarios, most of them in a multi-server tree environment. Since it is an image/restoreprocedure, all information is preserved (including eDir, NICI, CA, etc.). If you are restor-ing/cloning to a different hardware platform, you will only need to adjust driver (NIC,SCSI) settings (vendor, slot, irq, whichever applies), and it is known these things arevery easy and fast on a NetWare box. It is fast, reliable, works great, and is our favoriteNetWare upgrade method.

Next Tuesday evening/Wednesday morning, we hope to intra-server copy of a 123MB NSS pool/partition that has about 80 MB of data, and another 15 MB NetWarepartition that’s full to another set of four 72 GB 15K RPM drives (two logical vol-umes) that will replace five 36 GB 10K RPM drives. Both of the drive sets are in thesame 1 GB/sec SAN. The server is a Pentium 4 1.4 Ghz with 1.5 GB of RAM. Whatkind of speed should I expect? Remember, I am not going across the LAN, becausethis is intra-server. My guess is at least 10 GB per hour.

One of our customers has reported an upgrade that was done on a Compaq ML370server. The migration was from a Compaq SMART 5300-128 Controller with 6 x 36 GBRAID5 to Compaq SMART 5300-256 Controller with 5 x 72 GB drives RAID5 and thevolume copy (while NetWare was running) was just over 2 hours. Both of the control-lers were in the server, so it was a disk-to-disk copy under NetWare 5.1.

I am running Portlock Storage Manager v.3.11 on NW5 SP6a 1 disk 3 partitions:diagnostic partition 31 MB, DOS start-up 94 MB, NW386 (traditional) 17 GB 2 vol-umes in Netware partition. For this server to be upgraded to NW6, the DOS partitionneeds to be over 100 MB. I managed to resize (shrink) both volumes and then theNW partition by 120MB, but in resizing the partition I had no access to the Startingand Ending positions - just Size or Free Space. The partition is smaller now, but itneeds to be at the end of the disk to make room for a larger DOS partition! Am Imissing something here?

Here is a method that you could use to increase the size of your DOSpartition:

1. Make an image of the disk using Portlock Storage Manager of the server. This ispurely for safety.

2. Attach an IDE drive to the server and then copy the DOS partition and the otherpartition on the drive over to the IDE drive using the Partition Copy commands withPortlock Storage Manager. During the copy process you can resize the DOS volume tothe size that you require.

3. Once this is finished you can delete the DOS partition and the other NetWarepartition from the original drive (hence the suggestion of the image in step 1 forsafety should the “wrong” thing be deleted).

4. Now copy back the DOS partition at its increased size.

5. Copy back the NetWare partition.

6. Remove the IDE drive and boot up your server.

He makes his presence known as soon asthe elevator door opens. He is known to mimic or whistle at visitors and wandering Portlock employ-ees. Chip, who is a Jandy Conurd bird, originated from NorthEastern Brazil. He is vibrantly colored and isknown to have an engaging personality. Al Ciallella has joined the Software Development team atPortlock Software. He is our newest Software Developer/Engineer.

Al comes to Portlock with many years of experience inengineering and computer consulting. He first began hiscareer as a Petroleum Engineer in California and Louisi-ana. There he discovered a great fascination in comput-ers. He decided to pursue his interest and earned a Mas-ters Degree in Computer Science from the University ofLouisiana in 1992.

Upon graduation, he began his career as a Computer Consultant traveling through Louisiana andUtah.

He calls Anaconda, Montana home now, and Portlock Software his new adventure. “It’s great towork in such a high energy place developing such a high quality of product,” added Al.

Vickie Edgar is the Sales Support Administrator, and the newest member ofthe Portlock Secretarial team.

She was discovered at the Southwest Montana Career Fair that Portlockattended. Vickie moved to Butte from Ohio to start a life in the place herfamily was from. In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with her sonand grandchildren.

At Portlock, Vickie assists the Sales team in tracking sales, invoicing, filing,and keeping the department updated. “Everyone has made me feel right athome, and really welcomed me in. I can’t wait to begin this journey atPortlock,” she commented.

Brenda Schultz is Portlock’s Evening Receptionist. Her role is to greet call-ers and assist other departments in various tasks.
