Welcome to Portslade AdultLearning! We hope you enjoythe new brochure and decideto do a course with us in theAutumn – whether for interestor to pursue further learningor employment.

Our challenge last year was to raise the profile ofadult learning in Portslade and we did indeed raiselocal participation by 22% – a great achievement.Our commitment to bringing learning to the heartof the community continues in earnest next yearwhen we open two new community learning centresin Boundary Road and Foredown Tower – pleasedrop in and see us once we’re open!

Study Skills - Return to Study Level 2 (NOCN) FE51Thurs 1.30-3.00 30 weeks 15.09.11 £130 £42 TBCThe course will help learners who are returning to study after a break, especially those undertakingGCSEs. It includes planning own learning, taking notes, doing basic research, skimming and scanningreading techniques, writing and IT skills. The course is compulsory for those doing a Full Level 2programme (and it will be free for these learners) but anyone else is also welcome to join.

Study Skills – Advanced Level 3 (NOCN) FE52Tues 4.00-6.00 30 weeks 13.09.11 £150 £42 TBCThe course provides the essential study skills required for A level courses. It will include goal-setting andtime management; research skills and research methods for A level; writing skills for various types ofassignment; ICT for learning; contributing to group discussions. The course is compulsory for studentsundertaking the Higher Education Foundation Programme (for whom it will be free) and is recommendedfor anyone new to A level study and/or considering HE in the future. It is possible that we shall also runthe course on a distance learning basis + 6 Saturday mornings.

Gain a Full Level 2

ICT/GCSE Programme for Adult Students

We are offering a Full Level 2 programme next year for adult students(aged 19+) who want to develop a solid, general grounding in a rangeof subjects for further study or to return to work.

This is an intensive course and you will be offered full support from tutors anda Return to Study programme. Students will need to commit additional time forhomework and assignments.

Students who do not already have a Full Level 2 qualification (see page 31) canpay the concessionary rate. The course is also available over 2 years (but notethat the Government is going to change the rules on concessionary rates for thoseaged 24+ in 2012).

We are currently taking expressions of interest. All applicants will be invited to ameeting to discuss the course, different subjects and any prior knowledge required.

Gain a full Level 3

Higher Education Foundation Programme for Adult Students

The new Full Level 3 programme offered by Portslade Adult Learning isdesigned for adult students (aged 19+) who would like to gain A levelsto progress to University courses, professional training eg. in Nursing orTeaching or to employment requiring Level 3 study.

This is an intensive course and applicants will need to consider the additional timerequired for homework and assignments. You will have the full support of a tutor - inyour studies and in applying for university or employment. There will also be a StudySkills programme designed specifically for A level study.

Students (all ages) who do not already have a Full Level 2 qualification (see Page31) and those aged 19-24 years without a Full Level 3 (see page 31) can pay theconcessionary rate. The course is also available over 2 years (but note that the ruleson concessionary rates for those aged 24+ will change in 2012).

We are currently taking expressions of interest. All applicants will be invited to ameeting to discuss the course, different subjects and any prior knowledge required.

Support for you and getting involvedLearning SupportIf you, or someone you know, might find it difficult to join a course because of alearning difficulty or disability, please let us know. We will discuss with you the bestway to support you so that you can succeed on the course. Please telephone 422632for more details.

Learning Support FundWe have a small Learning Support Fund for learners who would have difficultymeeting some of the costs of learning. Please ask for an application form if you thinkthis may help you. The fund can be used to support the cost of materials, books, traveland child-care. It can only cover fees in exceptional circumstances. This is a limitedresource but we hope it will mean that no-one is genuinely prevented from joining acourse for financial reasons. As an alternative, we may be able to offer stagedpayments to help you pay your course fees. Please telephone 422632 for more details.
