A first thought about your event in Portugal...

Portugal is the right country to organise your special event, either it is a dozen people incentive or a multithousand people congress. An incentive for a small number of people can be organised practically in any area of Portugal as it is a tendency nowadays for incentives to become smaller and smarter; a bigger event, however, it’s better to expect it to be made in Porto area,Lisbon area or in the Algarve.

Basing the flights in the 3 main airports, within a range of a 2 hours transfer, the choices are not only great in number but also invariety, as you can have either a seaside resort where you can have many sport & beach games, or a countryside spot where youhave a lot of space for as many activities as you want.

Offering good flight access, value for money and a modern 21st century infrastructure, Portugal has long been a safe and reliabledestination for MICE planners and organisers.

Blessed with a mild yearround climate, plenty of sunshine, excellent food and wine and some of the finest congress and accommodation facilities anywhere in the world, it has all the right ingredients for a successful conference, meeting or incentiveprogramme.

A DMC can provide local destination knowledge and ground services, as well as offering the following; Meet and Greet, Transfers /Transportation, Hotel Accommodation, Restaurants, Activities, Excursions, Conference Venues, Themed Events, Gala Dinners andLogistics. We are also able to assist with overcoming any language barriers.

A DMC must be someone that you can relate to and trust, and with whom you work closely as a team, whilst we assist you on botha creative and professional level. We are often able to provide preferential rates based on the buying power that we have with theirpreferred suppliers.

Just tell us the needs of your incentive and we will present you the best solution!

Geographical data

Located in the Southwest of Europe, between the parallels 37º and 42º ofNorth latitude and the meridians 6º and9.5º West of Greenwich, Portugal is limited by Spain at North and East(1215 km of border) and at South andWest by the Atlantic Ocean (700 km ofcoast).

The National territory has an area of 88797,365 km2 including the Madeira andAzores Archipelagos, and the continental territory has a maximumlength of 561 Km and a maximum widthof 218 Km. The Cape of Roca is thewesternmost point of Continental Portugal. The prolongation of the Mountains of the Iberian Peninsula aredistinctive for two types of relief, atNorth and at South of the Tejo river.

At North, the relief is hillier, with steepslopes cut by deep valleys. Between therivers Minho and Douro, there is a mountain chain (GalaicoDuriense) thatreaches the coastal line. Between therivers Douro and Tejo, we can find thehighest peaks, at the Serra do Marãoand Serra da Estrela (2.000 m).

At South of the Tejo, there is the biggestarea of flat lands, with rare mountains, being the most important here the Serra Algarvia. There is also some swampylands at the Tejo and Sado valleys.

Porto and the North

If you look for that special charm onlyold European cities have, Porto is yourchoice, as this is an old yet at the sametime contemporary city. Also in what Hotels are concerned, you may choosefrom an 18th. Century Palace like Pousada do Porto or the modern glass, steel and marble Sheraton Porto Hotel

Classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996, the city is as popular today for its history and cultureas it has always been for the famousPort wine. Key attractions such as the12thcentury Cathedral and the magnificent São Francisco Churchfinely illustrate the city’s ancient patrimony, while the old wine lodges onthe south bank of the River Douro aretailormade for group dinners and cocktail receptions. Other versatile venues include the centrallylocatedStock Exchange Palace and hightechEuroparque congress centre south ofthe city. But much of Oporto’s appeallies in the fact that it remains a largelyundiscovered destination, a place thatmost people have never visited before. And with a modern infrastructure andseveral topend hotels to choose from, there’s plenty of appeal for the international MICE market. Also for a specialevent a cruise in the Douro river canhelp the success.

Northern Portugal is a beautiful regionsteeped in tradition and full of local history. Stretching from the green Minhoregion to the enchanting Douro Valley, itis a green and pleasant land of mountains, ancient cities and extraordinary natural beauty. Besides all the activities possible in this region, the medieval dinner in FeiraCastle is a special event for Incentives.

The terraced slopes of the River Douroare the real home of Port wine, which iscarried downriver to the lodges ofOporto before being shipped around theworld. Most of the winemakers in theDouro Valley are well prepared to receive small groups for guided toursand winetasting sessions, while cruisecompanies operating along the river cancater for corporate functions and pre and postevent excursions. Also, indue time, it is possible to organize agroup to participate in the Harvest inDouro Valley, the oldest demarcatedarea in the world!

Lisboa Region

Boasting an ultramodern infrastructureand elegant oldworld charm, Lisboaoffers a fresh alternative to the moreregular conference and incentive destinations around the world. The Portuguese capital exudes an invitingwarmth and geniality that most European capitals have longsince outgrown. And blessed with appealing architecture and 3,000 years of history, the city can compete for any type ofMICE event, large or small.

Lisboa is packed with possibilities forgroup activities, both in the city andalong the resort areas of the EstorilCoast. Options include dining in restored palaces and other historicmonuments such as the imposing Castle of São Jorge and the 16thcentury Jerónimos Monastery inBelém. Various other venues such asthe Beato Convent and Estufa Friabotanical gardens also cater for a widerange of corporate functions.

The new exhibition centre located in theheart of the city’s Park of Nations is arich legacy of the Expo ’98 World Exposition. With four pavilions coveringa gross area of 100,000 squaremetres, the centre is on a par with many of theworld’s leading fairgrounds, and next toit there is Pavilhão Atlântico, with a capacity for up to 13.500 people in convention setup. Meanwhile, on theother side of town, the Lisbon CongressCentre has recently been redevelopedfor largescale events.

Being Lisboa the capital of the country,it has of course a good hotel capacity, good communication means and a largenumber of events possibilities, within a2 hours driving from the airport, withsome completely different type atmospheres, climate and vegetation, from the hot and dry Alentejo to the wetand chilly Sintra, from the seaside to thecountryside.

Algarve

Blessed with numerous golf courses, luxurious beach resorts and quaint littlefishing villages, the Algarve is a dream destination for conference and incentive organisers. Arade Congress Centrewith a capacity for up to 1.000 delegates and Portimão Arena for up to6.000 people, are the region’s most important and most modern places forcongresses.

Yearround sunshine and 150 kilometres of sandy shoreline make theAlgarve a haven not just for holidays butalso for interesting group programmes.Inhabited since the time of the Phoenicians, it was the Moors who leftthe most visible legacy a fact that ismostly evident in the region’s place –names and architecture. Bordered ontwo sides by the Atlantic, the Algarve isdivided from the rest of Portugal by aseries of lowlying mountains. In theeast, the Guadiana River forms a scenicborder with neighbouring Spain.

Accommodation capacity is not a problem in the Algarve as there areplenty of Hotels throughout the region,in the diverse categories and types of atmosphere.

Thermal Baths

From North to South there are around30 different places where we can findthermal waters in Portugal, some ofthem found and developed by the Romans when they were occupying theIberian Peninsula!

The medicinal waters are used to cureor prevent a great number of diseases,of the respiratory, muscle and skeletal, dermatological, digestive and circulatorysystems and others. Also in someplaces, there is also the possibility tomake physiotherapy.

In the last few years there has been an increase in the number of Thermalbaths offering also spa and wellbeingtreatments.

Besides these thermal / medicinal waters, there is also a wide choice forspas in Hotels all over Portugal.

Horses

Equestrian activity in Portugal is a tradition established long before theearly days of military equitation and inwhich present equestrian sports arerooted.

Portugal is among the few countries inthe world where professional equestrianactivity has been kept alive uninterruptedly thanks to Bullfighting, thus insuring that we keep this cultureand tradition from the 18th century.

Though equestrian centres scattered allover the country have different aims and purposes, they all offer horseriding tuition. To appreciate the real scope ofequestrian activities in Portugal, it isnecessary to look at them and their supporting infrastructures in context.

This is the role of an Incoming agent: tohelp foreign clients to choose the best infrastructures at the best location, either concerning accommodation orother important issues such as roads, interesting spots in the area or climate.

Golf

Portugal is already a leading destinationfor golfers in Europe, and the number ofgolf courses is increasing, as every yearthere are new courses opening.

The many IAGTO awards won by Portugal Golf courses and resorts arethe proof that this is a top destination forgolfers. But when in Portugal, it is worthwhile to visit the many importantmonuments and taste our gastronomy, specially our delightful desserts and ouralwaysfresh fish and shellfish.

The incredible 300 days of sunshine peryear and the landscape give to Portugalthe natural conditions the Golf architectsseek and are inspired by.

In addition, it is also possible to combine a city life with Golf, as in many Portuguese cities, like Lisboa and Porto, there are some golf courses within thecity limits.

Easily reached, Portugal is a paradisewhere the golfer can play almost everyday of the year. Every course offers newand surprising landscapes, backed upby excellent services and facilities.
