Which GI Bill Should I Choose?

In most cases, Post 9/11 will be more beneficial if…

You are eligible for 100% benefits under Post 9/11 You are taking 12 credit hours & will receive 100% of BAH If you plan on transferring your benefits to your dependents

For others, MGIB may be more beneficial if… You are active duty & will not receive BAH under Post 9/11 You have used most of your MGIB benefits

Calculate your benefits: http://www.newgibill.org/calculator

Page 27: Post 9/11 G.I. Bill Eligibility Served at least 90 days of active duty after September 10, 2001 Exceptions All: Does not include initial 3 years of service

Things to Consider In some locations the cost of housing and

college (Post 9/11) are less than the payment received under MGIB

In some states veterans do not have to pay tuition at selected colleges (Texas, Illinois, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Montana, South Dakota, Wyoming, Wisconsin)

What is your benefit level? How many months you need to complete your

goal? Do you plan on transferring your benefits?

How to calculate benefits

Tuition & Fees = benefit level x cost

- Term = 15 Aug – 14 Dec (4 months)

- 9 Terms = 36 months (9 Terms x 4 months)

- School Year = Aug-Jul

Book Stipend =$41.67 x credit hrs x (benefit level)

- ($41.67 x 12hrs x (100%) = $500

BAH = benefit level x zip code x credit hrs

NO, your benefits cover expenses up to the total cost of your education with a cap of $18,077.50 VA will only pay costs not paid by other sources (excluding Federal Aid)

Are there any restrictions when transferring benefits to another veteran? … For example in a dual military situation?

Yes, a veteran is limited to 48 months of entitlement under any combination of benefit programs. For example, if you use 36 months under Post 9/11, you can still use up to 12 months of benefits

transferred to you by your spouse.

Must I have my Certificate of Eligibility to enroll in school? NO, early submission for enrollment is encouraged even without the certificate

Can I pay my student loans with my Post 9/11 GI Bill benefits? No, the Post 9/11 GI Bill does not repay student loans

How long will it take to receive my benefits from the VA? Once school submits enrollment verification -> entered into system by VA

Can take up to 6 weeks to process during start of each semester Receive payment within 2 weeks of verifying enrollment at end of the month Ask school about delaying payments

If I fail a course, will I be required to pay the VA back? No, as long as you receive a grade (pass or fail) the VA will not ask for your GI Bill $$ back However, if a student drops/withdraws a course or receives an incomplete grade, the VA will

immediately stop paying benefits for those courses and may bill the student for benefits used during that term (depending on the circumstances)
