Concerns that Watercare has been trucking water to Waiuku’s reservoir be- cause the town is running out have been lifted, with the company clarifying the tankers are part of a testing programme. “As part of our investigations into fu- ture sources of supply for Waiuku we have been carrying out some pumping tests on the existing bores. To properly assess the test bore, we have to briefly isolate the other two. We carry out these tests at night when demand is lowest and aim to complete testing before the morning peak demand period. In order to ensure security of supply, water tankers are on standby during this period,” a Watercare spokesman said. Tankers have been used to supplement the water supply on eight occasions, typi- cally for no more than 12 hours at a time during bore testing or standard mainte- nance work. Over the past four years, Watercare has invested more than $120 million in improving water and wastewater services in the Franklin area. As part of this programme, they have closed the bore in Pukekohe as well as treat- ment plants at Patumahoe, Clarks Beach, Glenbrook Beach and Waiau Beach, as the water from these plants did not meet the public health grading re- quirements for an ‘Aa’ grade. These areas are now supplied with ‘Aa’ grade water via a new pipeline from the Waikato water treatment plant. The water supply for Waiuku remains the three local groundwater sources and associated treatment plants on Waiuku Road, Cornwall Road and Victoria Av- enue). Watercare says rumours that leaky pipes are causing massive water losses are untrue. “It is true that we are currently inves- tigating the amount of unaccounted for water being taken from the Waiuku net- work; however, it is highly unlikely (to say the least), that these losses could be caused by leaks.” Watercare also noted rumours of a leaking sewage pipe in the harbour are unfounded, although work is going on in the area. “A pipe carrying wastewater from Glen- brook Beach to the Clarks Beach Waste- water Treatment Plant runs under the es- tuary. A concrete slab protecting the pipe requires some remedial work; we will be carrying this out once the weather is bet- ter and we have consent.” The New Zealand Medical Asso- ciation has presented its highest hon- our—the Chairman’s Award—to for- mer Hunua MP Dr Paul Hutchison. Concerns that Watercare has been trucking water to Waiuku’s reservoir be-cause the town is running out have been lifted, with the company clarifying the tankers are part of a testing programme.

“As part of our investigations into fu-ture sources of supply for Waiuku we have been carrying out some pumping tests on the existing bores. Over the past four years, Watercare has invested more than $120 million in improving water and wastewater services in the Franklin area. As part of this programme, they have closed the bore in Pukekohe as well as treat-ment plants at Patumahoe, Clarks

The New Zealand Medical Asso-ciation has presented its highest hon-our—the Chairman’s Award—to for-mer Hunua MP Dr Paul Hutchison.

Reunion marks 150 years since Hanfling family arrived

Ararimu award

Is it just me, or is Christmas becoming a fes-tive season which is slowly spreading its tinsel-coated tentacles closer to June with every pass-ing year? I popped into an Auckland dairy on the weekend and the cheery chap behind the coun-ter was wearing a Santa hat and wishing his cus-tomers a Merry Christmas. Does he not expect to see them again for another 20 days? Or is he go-ing to wish them the same message every day for almost three weeks?

Every time I turn on the radio I’ve got some chap wailing about a White Christmas or a Silent Night and television is interspersed with hun-dreds of ads telling me about Christmas sales that are ON NOW!

This has been going on since mid-November.I like Christmas where it has always been. After

work has finished for the year, the barbecue has been cleaned and the shopping is done.

None of those things happen at the end of No-vember. In another few years, the expansion of the Christmas season will mean it will flow seam-lessly from Easter. Shops will be selling Easter Bunnies dressed in a Santa Suit with a Christmas Tree festooned with chocolate eggs. The Boxing Day sales will launch the new range for Valen-tines Day and we will have one 12-month period of sales which try to encompass all of them.

The House Boss tells me I’m a Christmas Grump, but I dispute that. I love Christmas Day. It’s just Christmas Quarter that winds me up.

Bah, humbug. Anyway. Merry Christmas!

Waiuku Lost & Found

Waiuku Police are holding the following items, found in; September: Canon Pow-ershot camera and case, (Constable Road), Canon camera, (Constable Road), Samsung Cellphone, (Do-main Street).

November: Black and green bike, (Hamilton Drive), electric oil heater, (Queen Street), Blue glass-es case, glasses and pen, (Brooksmith Drive), Sam-sung Cellphone, (Queen Street).

Waitangi weekend next year will see major celebrations at the Waiuku Cosmopolitan Club as members of the Han-fling family hold a reunion marking 150 years in New Zealand.

The event will be held on Saturday, February 7, and marks the arrival on Novem-ber 18, 1864, when ancestors of the family arrived from Cape Town after four years in South Africa. There were six-teen foreigners on the ship, in-cluding five from what is now

Franklin’s Ararimu School was among a number of kin-dergartens and schools across Auckland recognised at the annual Enviroschools cel-ebration on Friday, when 26 Enviroschools will received Bronze, Silver or Green-Gold certificates of achievement.

Deputy Mayor Penny Hulse presented the Enviroschools certificates for the pro-gramme, which lets children introduce initiatives to im-prove their own kindergartens and schools, while also help-ing their wider community. Initiatives include recycling to reduce waste going to landfill, saving water by installing wa-ter tanks, and increasing bio-diversity by planting native gardens.

A reader writes: I would like to nominate ‘Jaz’ at Cafe Karma for the Wow award. It was the day of our Christ-mas function for Osborne’s Realty and eight of us decided to pop into Cafe Karma for breakfast before our big day out. Jaz put our tables together and put a table cloth on it and a lovely Christmas decoration, which made us feel special with chocolates and strawberries followed by our delicious breakfast. We all felt Jaz was just wonderful, taking great care of us. He really went above and beyond.

the Hanfling family. Those five were Frantz Ferdinand Hempling, his wife Mary The-resa, and children Joseph, Jo-hanna and Veronica. The fam-ily name was later changed to Hanfling from Hempling.

The family were allocated five acre allotments at Waipipi as per Cape rules on February 2, 1865.

The family originally came from Poland, which then was a part of Prussia. Joseph mar-ried Brigit Goode of Galway, Ireland, while Johanna’s first marriage was to Jeremiah Kelleher of Waiuku and she later remarried to Henry

James Clinker, of Thames. Ve-ronica married William Ebbit Rolton, also of Thames.

Organisers of the reunion are seeking descendants or possible descendants with connections to the fam-ily names of McDonnell, McDonald, Hogan, Preece, Otto, Gleeson, Strong, Pul-man, Maloney, Stacey, Smith, Neuby, McGynn, Butterworth or Baggstron. The apostles teach that with Christian courtesy we are to deal in plain terms with sin and sinners; that this is not inconsistent with true charity. “Whosoever committeth sin,” he writes, “transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law. And ye know that He was manifested to take away our sins; and in Him is no sin. Whosoever abideth in Him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen

Him, neither known Him.” {AA 555} Parents are to make the religion of

Christ attractive by their cheerfulness, their Christian courtesy, and their tender, compassionate sympathy; but they are to be firm in requiring respect and obedience. {AH 323}

Christian courtesy is the golden clasp which unites the members of the family in bonds of love, becoming closer and stronger every day. {AH 423}

Elva showered with flowers

Confusion over rubbish bag colours

Aliah winsBirthday celebrations are special, but they don’t get much more special than a 100th birthday, as Glen-brook’s Elva Kempe discovered this week. Family gathered for a function where Elva was presented with 100 roses, sent by family in the United Kingdom, before a gathering on Sunday afternoon at the water gardens in Patumahoe.

Franklin residents purchasing yellow ‘pre-paid’ rubbish bags which are on sale at super-markets and grocery stores in the region have been confused when told that council transfer stations will not accept them.

Residents spoken to by the Post Newspa-per were under the impression that the yellow bags were an option to use instead of purchas-ing the council rubbish stickers, however the two are completely separate.

Ian Stupple, Auckland Council’s manager, Solid Waste, explains the yellow bags are run by a private company, and has nothing to do with council. This also explains why residents have seen two rubbish collection trucks in their streets, leading to questions as to why council seemed to be employing two contrac-tors.

“Auckland Council runs a very competi-tive and reliable kerbside rubbish collection service to collect and dispose of bags with the council sticker on it,” Ian says. “For add-ed convenience residents can also drop their stickered rubbish bags free of charge at the Waiuku Community Recycling Centre, which

is a council-owned site and operated by Wai-uku Zero Waste, a local community enterprise.

“The council rubbish service is not run to make a profit, however retaining our custom-ers and offering a convenient and high value service is the council’s aim. Supporting the council service helps us to achieve econo-mies of scale and make savings in delivery of the service. The current funding structure al-lows us to deliver a reliable rubbish collection which for convenience is on the same collec-tion day as recycling.”

One issue for ratepayers is that if many switch to the yellow bags, this means less funding for council, and a potential increase in council rubbish collection costs.

“The council does not charge for, or collect, the yellow bags,” Ian says. “The Waiuku site does not accept the yellow non-council bags, as this would mean that Waiuku ratepayers pay twice for disposal of the same bag – that is, the initial purchase of the bag, which goes to the private operator, then paying again indi-rectly for the disposal of the bag through their rates.”

Franklin photographer Aliah Jan was one of the award winners in interna-tional Black & White Spi-der Awards recently. Ali-ah’s image of ‘Mother and Child’, (detail below), was recognised by the judges in the competition which received 8,508 entries from 73 countries.

Other images by Aliah were also nominated in several other categories. The Jury represented the

industry’s biggest names including The Royal Pho-tographic Society, Fratelli Alinari, and the Stockholm City Museum.

Bank notes from Libya, Algeria, South Africa and even the British Military Authority are

just some of the unusual finds as Wai-uku Lions tally up the latest local do-nations towards the Lions’ national Heads Up for Kids appeal.

Launched in July 2010, Heads Up for Kids is a unique collection which asks New Zealanders to dig out and donate old decimal and pre-deci-mal New Zealand currency, and all foreign money. The obsolete cash is then redeemed for New Zealand dollars and used to fund education programmes for young New Zea-landers. To date New Zealand Lions

have collected over 20 tonnes of coins and thousands of bank notes, raising close to $500,000.

The Reserve Bank of New Zealand estimates that there is $80 million in old decimal and pre-decimal NZ coins and $20 million in old bank notes un-accounted for. Waiuku Lions have so far collected over 188kg and Lion Peter Hook, (left) hopes to reach the 200kg tar-get before Christmas.

Anyone with any old coins or foreign money, can drop them in to the collec-tion tins at Waiuku New World, any bank branch, Office Products Depot or the Waiuku Cosmopolitan Club.

Right: Franklin Wood-turners Club members Dick Veitch and John Balsallie with some of the handmade creations available for sale at the group’s Collingwood Road clubrooms in Waiuku.

The sale opened last week and will run to Christmas Eve, between 9am and 6pm daily, with a special attrac-tion this year being a door prize which will be drawn the day before Christmas.

The Franklin Local Board will today (Tuesday), consider a recommenda-tion to allocate up to $35,000 for the ‘Franklin Local Board World War One Project Fund’.

The fund would be to support pro-jects that provide a community focal point to commemorate times of war,

and applicants would have to be incor-porated societies. The fund is aimed at new permanent structures, or repairs to existing ones, but funding for com-memorative events. Projects on private land would need evidence of public ac-cess and public good, and there must be no ongoing maintenance require-

ments for council. If approved, a con-testable funding round would likely take place in early 2015. The Board has a discretionary operational budget of $256,140 to allocate in the financial year and has allocated $183,180 leav-ing a balance of $72,960, which must be spent in the current year.

Witnesses have identified a man in his mid-20s after a trail of dam-age in Waiuku’s Queen Street in the early hours of Friday morning. Shop windows were smashed, signs were vandalised and Christmas lights pulled down overnight. Hundreds of dollars worth of repairs are required on the Christmas lights which hang from the shopfronts. It is hoped the town’s CCTV cameras will be able to identify any further offenders., after an increase in vandalism in the township in recent weeks.

ChristmasWe get to this time of year way too quickly these days, but please let us look at what is really behind this “silly season.” Christmas comes from an ancient term of Christ Mass, or the mass that is connected to the time of the birth of the Messiah, Jesus Christ. This event was the long awaited promised Messiah that the ancients and prophets looked forwards to from as far back as Adam and Eve, for when Eve held up her first born son, and she declared that she now held in her hands the Messiah; but he just ended out to be the first murderer, so that was a crushing blow to them. It took another 4000 years before Mary could hold the bundle of joy, the Angels sang, the Wise Men visited, well you know the rest of the story.

In the Old Testament we have Messiah depicted in two major different roles, hence two different titles to differentiate which is which. We have “Messiah ben Joseph,” and “Messiah ben David.” The ben bit means “son of,” so we have the Messiah who is connected with, or to like Joseph and the Messiah role connected to be more like King David. The suffering humble and non-retaliating Messiah (Isaiah 53), and the King David ruler, which Revelation often depicts him as the “King of Kings and Lord of Lords.”Well the David connection is well depicted in Matt 1:1; and all through scripture, and it was the role that the Jews in Jesus’ time wanted so badly, just for their armies to be always victorious and for them to sit in top places of dominance over the surrounding nations. They had no interest in the Joseph role as depicted in Isaiah 53, which was perfectly carried out in the life, ministry and death of Jesus Christ, the “Lamb of God that taketh away the sins of the world.” This critical role needed to come first to prepare the way for the second and kingly role.

We are very familiar with the Joseph role, so let us explore the David role as that is the role that is ahead of us, and soon to be fulfilled. Matt 16:27, Matt 24:31, Matt 25:31, Mark 8:38, Matt 24:30-31, Mark 13:23-27, Matt 25:31-32 to quote a few in the New Testament. Again, Jesus advised those condemning him at his trial that they would someday be arraigned at his feet to answer for their deeds, Pilot’s wife even warned her husband to tread very carefully, have nothing to do with this Just Man, as she was warned in a dream about who Jesus really was.Jesus promised in John 14:1-3 that Jesus was leaving us, he was going back home to “Father,” Building a marriage home (New Jerusalem) and then he was coming back to take his Bride (anyone who accepts him as Saviour and Redeemer) back to heaven and to their new home. There to celebrate the “Marriage Supper of the Lamb,” (Rev 19:9).The “Second Coming” as it is often referred to, or the coming back of Jesus once more to shut down this world, and to take his faithful followers home, is not often spoken about, we often talk about the past, his life on earth and his sacrifice at Calvary, and that is critical to our salvation, but we have the Parable of the Ten Bridesmaids and we find that in their story half of them did not go into the kingdom. What a waste of time and effort, to spend all that time in “The Church,” and then to make no

preparation, and thus to come up short and fail to make the cut for the Kingdom. God has provided Grace in an exuberant abundance. Forgiveness freely for anything and yet everything, and yet how often you and I hang onto our sins and failings like it is some precious rare treasure, and yet it is a death sentence, in reality, to hang onto it, that’s silly. We need to confess, forsake and to dump sin immediately.

Maybe we need to hear John the Baptist cry out, “Repent for the Kingdom of Heaven is near.” Paul in Romans give us this admonition in Rom 13:11 “And that, knowing the time, that now [it is] high time to awake out of sleep: for now [is] our salvation nearer than when we believed.” Sin and suffering has plagued this world for nigh on 6000 Years, and scripture and Prophecy clearly warns us all that time has just about run out, and the statement, “and time shall be no more” (Rev 10:6) is very soon to be announced from Heaven.Elijah and Mt Carmel is still valid today, “And Elijah came unto all the people, and said, “How long halt ye between two opinions? if the LORD [be] God, follow him: but if Baal, [then] follow him. And the people answered him not a word.” {1 Kings 18:21.} Jesus many Parables clearly delineated between only two options, that of; Sheep-Goats, Wheat-Tares, Wise-Foolish Bridesmaids, Saved-Lost, Our God’s- Not Our God’s, and so the list goes on, Joshua still cries out “And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that [were] on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.” {Joshua 24:15.}

How is your life, how is my life, with “The Lord?” Have you and I repented and forsaken our old life, our old ways, and our old leader, Satan the Lying and Deceiving Devil? Have we cast off those things that so easily beset us and run with patience the race that is set before us? Actually, which world do we actually live in, this world or God’s world (by Faith)? Have we made our home and treasure here or is it in Heaven, over there?Jesus has paid the price for our individual debts, and for the worlds debts, John 3:16 tells us that we all can have salvation, all we need to do is to accept and to submit to the fantastic “Makeover” Jesus wants to do for us, so we just need to accept, be grateful, and live like Christians cropping heavy crops of the “Fruit of the Spirit,” and to be prepared and to live like miniature Jesus’ as we call ourselves Christians, so why so often we sort of look like our enemy Satan, and behave more like sinners than saints?Dear Reader, please let each of us re-dedicate ourselves right now, to our Master, Jesus, and to do it daily, and make a New Year’s Resolution of no more sin and Satan, just Jesus and real life.

Eden Christian Academy in Tuakau held its annual prizegiving on Wednesday at La Valla Estate. Above, the 2015 prefects were joined on stage by their proud parents, who pinned the students’ badges on. Eden Academy’s Head student for 2015 was named as Michaela Lambert.

Last Thursday the Awhitu CWI held its annual Christmas party and member Heather Edwards had a surprise when daughter Margaret turned up with a 90th birthday cake. Heather’s actual birthday was December 8th. Attendees had afun day with plentyof Christmas food, presents and a Dutch auction. Caitlin Barker of Hud-sons Beach won the cake raffle, an annual fundraiser for the Neu-rological Society, which this year raised $500. President Elsie Mon-teith said she was really pleased with the day.

The Pukekohe RSA Pipe Band, which led the floats taking part in the Tuakau and Pukekohe Christmas parades on the weekend, wants new members. The band displayed a sign in its ranks during the parades, inviting interested people to make contact. Spokesperson, Wayne Mc-Carthy, said strong membership will en-sure the long-term success of what locals describe as ‘Franklin’s pride and joy’.

“There may be pipers or drummers in the district who have not played for a while and are thinking they might like to resume.”

The Waiuku parade will take place this Saturday with the band in the lead. For those interested in joining, Wayne can be contacted on 09 238 7222.

A restricted fire season for rural areas in the Auckland region will be implemented from 15 December. Lighting an outdoor fire on rural land is still possible but a permit is required for fires in the open air.

“Conditions are very windy for this time of year and last week there were a number of fire incidents around the region due to controlled burns getting out of control,” says Auckland Council Principal Rural Fire Officer Bryan Cartelle.

Council will be issuing fire per-mits in Auckland’s rural zones which include farms, forestry areas and large blocks of land. Permits are free

of charge. Council is introducing an Outdoor Fire Safety Bylaw to man-age the risk of all outdoor fires in both rural and urban areas.

The bylaw will continue with seasonal restrictions but also gives guidance on the types of fire and fuel allowed with an aim to protect people, property and the environ-ment from the risk of fire. The bylaw is due to come into effect on 20 De-cember.

For information on fire safety and tips for the safe lighting of open air fires call Auckland Council on 09 301 0101 or visit aucklandcouncil/rural-fire.govt.nz

It was an emotional moment last Friday evening when Waiuku College’s Year 13 students said goodbye to the College for the last time at the annual Leavers’ Dinner.

Acting Principal Mark Nickless spoke of the new journey the students were about to embark upon, and also had a few words of advice for parents - “Let them go,” he said.

Deputy Head Students Logan Forrest and Kayla Jordan were the masters of ceremonies, while a musical item was performed by students Joshua Cleland and Lyam Buchanan. The keynote speaker of the event was former Head Girl Imogen Neil, now con-cluding her studies at Waikato University, where she has received a ‘Blue’ for her hockey.

Imogen was Head Girl five years ago, when the gathered stu-dents were just starting out at Waiuku College and she provided some insights into the next challenges they would face.

Teacher Trish Whitehead, who has been the Dean for the stu-dents since Year 9, remaining their Dean in each successive year, spoke of her pride in the group and their academic achieve-ments. She also laughingly apologised to two students; Nicholas Whittaker and Head Boy Bradley Hagan, for being unable to tell them apart all year. The boys got their own back later in the even-ing, when the leaving certificates were being presented and they each stood to receive the other’s certificate, to laughter from the student body. The Year 13 class presented Ms Whitehead with a painting of a tree, with the ‘leaves’ made from thumb-prints from each of the students.

It may look like a natural disaster, but a

house broken into two pieces is all part of the plan to place

a relocatable home on a Waiuku property. Yesterday morning half of the home was on the Owens Road

site, while the other half was a short drive away near the

Owens Road Reserve.

Going the extra mile for his community

Franklin Service Herothis week:

Rod Wilson, Cocky’s CornerRod Wilson has been a part of the Franklin

community for a decade, after purchasing the Cocky’s Corner business and moving into the area, but few people realise he has also probably racked up more points for the Counties-Manukau Steelers than most players.

A big rugby supporter in South Auckland with the Otahuhu Rugby Club, Rod soon got involved with Waiuku Rugby and has been the delegate to the Counties Rugby Union since 2006. Through his business, he has also been one of the major sponsors of the club through the years, and has also

been involved in sponsoring Awhitu Golf as well as many locals schools and the Waiuku Christmas Parade.

And as for all those points he has racked up for Counties?

Well, while many of his customers don’t realise it, Rod and his wife Angela have for many years looked after the scoreboard at the stadium, racking up the scores!

“It is good news that Inland Revenue’s strategy to track down property speculators who avoid tax is showing big dividends.” says NZ Property Investors’ Federation Ex-ecutive Officer, Andrew King.

“Our members are rental property owners or investors, but many people in New Zea-land think we are traders and speculators. The confusion comes from speculators say-ing they are investors to avoid paying tax on their profits.

People then blame investors for not pay-

ing their fair share of tax. The IRD are doing a good job to make sure the system works”.

IRD looked at property developers specu-lating in the residential market, particularly in Auckland and Queenstown. They visited 2,500 industry and other interest groups to raise awareness of their tax-related respon-sibilities, and they monitored 26,000 proper-ties and property-related issues.

Information from Inland Revenue shows that rental property owners paid nearly half a billion dollars in tax on their rental income.

It is 10 years since Rod and Angela Wil-son purchased the Cocky’s Corner timber and hardware business in Waiuku from Ray O’Leary and the business has continued to expand.

The couple say, while the core of the busi-ness of supplying to farmers, builders and home-owners has not changed enormously over the past decade, there have been two significant factors.

One has been the business becoming part of the BuildLink group, which provides large-scale buying power for small-to-medi-um businesses throughout the country, and the other has been the development of the pre-built sheds, chicken runs, kennels and the like. In fact, that side of the business has grown so much they now have a dedicated staff member whose sole role is assembling the ready-built items.

Rod didn’t come from a building back-

ground, having spent 25 years with a phar-maceutical company, and says it was a steep learning curve as he adapted into the new lifestyle.

He’s proud of the scale of the business and its product range, noting ‘you could build a house completely with what we sell’, but says the biggest assets of the business are the staff.

Rod and Angela joke that Sharline O’Leary, (Ray’s daughter), who was working in the business before they bought it, was actually ‘one of the chattels’, and her long experience with the business and clients has been in-valuable. But the stability of staff is definitely one of the factors in the success of Cocky’s Corner.

“Peter and Neil have been with us since 2005, and Rick has been here for the past two years,” Rod and Angela say, adding there’s one other staff member - ‘Greg, the dog!

Dolphin Tale 2 It has been several years since young Sawyer Nel-son and the dedicated team at the Clearwater Ma-rine Hospital, headed by Dr. Clay Haskett, rescued Winter. With the help of Dr. Cameron McCarthy, who developed a unique prosthetic tail for the injured dol-phin, they were able to save her life. Yet their fight is not over. Winter’s surrogate mother, the very elderly dolphin Panama, has passed away, leaving Winter without the only poolmate she has ever known. However, the loss of Panama may have even greater repercussions for Winter, who, according to USDA regulations, cannot be housed alone, as dolphins’ social behavior requires them to be paired with other dolphins. Time is running out to find a compan-ion for her before the team at Clearwater loses their beloved Winter to another aquarium.

Above: The Reverend David McSorley holds Isabella Lillian Smith after she was baptised at the St Bride’s Anglican Church in Mauku re-cently. Isabella is the daughter of Adrian and Nicola Smith and her god parents were Nic, Kris and Philippa.

“It was such a lovely day; the people of the church were so welcoming in inviting us into their church and making us a part of their fam-ily,” Nicola said. Seven-month-old Isabella’s brother Oliver Smith had been baptised at the same church two years earlier by David.

Last Wednesday a team of 29 keen young-sters from Waiuku Primary School travelled to Mountfort Park in Manukau to have a crack at the Weetbix TRYathlon.

The event attracted a record number of over 1,500 children all getting out and hav-ing a go at the swim, bike and run event.

“We had about five neat kids from the school participate in the Weetbix TRY last year which was a great start but we knew we could get a whole lot more involved,” said Lynda Pearce, one of the senior teachers at the school.

So Mrs Pearce and the teachers spread the word and the students who did the TRY last year created excitement among their friends and the numbers grew.

One of the children, Quinn Gardiner-Hall, an enthusiastic “eventer” talked his Mum Kylie into lending a hand with some training and momentum built from there.

“This is an awesome bunch of kids. When we first started training, some of the chil-dren were very new to biking and some struggled just to run a lap of the field,” says Kylie.

“But through their dedication during training and willingness to give it a go, they all put in fantastic efforts at the event. And the children’s families have been so sup-portive too. They have got the kids to train-ings which we know is hard with everyone having such busy lives, ensured they had all the gear they needed and most importantly encouraged them”, says Kylie.

The race distances for the majority of the children were a 75m swim, a 4km bike ride and a 1.5km run. Children were grouped in their age groups and wave starts, (where groups of about 20-30 children go at one time), were used to spread everyone around the course so no one got too tangled up.

“We are just so very proud of the children. They all had excellent attitudes and al-though some of them were pretty tired once they had finished their race, they were full of smiles and are already saying they want to do it again next year.

“It’s amazing the confidence children gain from participating in an event like the Weetbix TRY and from putting in the hard yards and seeing that effort pay off. We’re hoping to have even more children take part in 2015 which will be wonderful!” adds Mrs Pearce.

Sporting celebrities such as Kiwi Olympic shot-put gold medalist Valerie Adams and basketball champ Dillon Boucher were at

the event to cheer the kids on, sign auto-graphs and hand out the medals. All chil-dren who competed received a Weetbix TRY t-shirt, a medal and of course it couldn’t be a Weetbix TRYathlon without a free Weetbix breakfast! Spot prizes included three Avanti bikes, helmets and more.

“We are extremely lucky to have a great partnership approach at the school. If there is a committed parent willing to help the kids achieve something, then the teachers will always be there to help with the organi-sation, permissions and formal aspects that need to be dealt with.

“We had a fab group of kids compete in the Awhitu Mud Run this year and now this great team at the Weetbix event,” adds Kylie.

Some of the children will take part in the Pukekohe Raceway duathlon next week and then the focus will be on the Fulton Swim School Franklin Triathlon in the New Year.

Frances Good, Year 8 student at Wai-pipi School, won the 800m and 1500m titles at the Auckland Schools Athletics Champion of Champions meeting last week, a stunning effort.“This girl is definitely one to watch in the future,” said proud principal Michelle Brown.

A blessing ceremony and tour of the Wai-uku Community Recycling Facility last week marked the opening of the very first of the

partnership programmes in Auckland.Kaumatua Jim Ropati blessed the site be-

fore speakers from council and the site op-erators explained the concept. Based in the former Waiuku Transfer Station, the project is a partnership between council and Wai-uku Zero Waste, a company which in turn works with long-time recycling organisa-tion, Xtreme Zero Waste from Raglan.

The centre seeks to make as much use from rubbish as possible, reducing waste to landfill, and recycles dumped goods,

selling them through a shop on site.Franklin Local Board chair Andy

Baker said it was great to see Franklin leading the way in the initiative, which

will be managed by Sue Wallis. The enterprise is modelled on the very

successful Raglan project, which has not only seen a massive reduction in waste to landfill, but now employs 26 people on a part time basis to assist with recycling.

Manager Sue Wallis and Franklin Board chair Andy Baker at the open-ing function last week.

Legislative changes will now enable peo-ple to access more KiwiSaver funds to help buy their first home. KiwiSaver members can now withdraw the Government’s annual Member Tax Credits, as well as their own and employer contributions. This complements the other elements of the Government’s HomeStart package, such as increasing house price caps to more realistic levels and enabling more people to apply for KiwiSaver HomeStart Grants.

ANZ Wealth General Manager Product and

Marketing Ana-Marie Lockyer welcomed the move which is designed to help more people purchase their first home.

“Part of planning for your retirement is having a house to live in,” said Ms Lockyer.

“Our records show that more than 95 per cent of people who have made a first home withdrawal from their KiwiSaver have re-sumed contributions to their retirement savings so most people are using the scheme very well to boost their overall assets and savings for retirement.”

Santa Claus gets a lot of at-tention during the holiday season. He deserves it - ru-mour has it that he takes into account your wish list, helps you improve your be-haviour from naughty to nice and travels around the world in just one night to deliver all of those presents. But how could he do all of this by himself?

As it turns out, Santa’s not alon e. According to folk-lore, working hard behind the scenes and under the big guy’s shadow are Santa’s elves. Typically under appre-ciated during the holidays, the amount of labour these tiny, mythical creatures clock in is pretty astound-ing. We have to assume that much like Rudolph and his red nose, without the help of the elves, Santa would have a lot more stress leading up to Christmas and wouldn’t be nearly as jolly. But have you ever wondered what the life of an elf is really like? So what do elves look like? Do elves just make toys, or do they have other duties? Do they work just during the months leading up to Christ-mas Eve, or do they work all year long? Do they get health insurance and vaca-tion time?

Although no one may ever know for sure just how elves operate, we at HowStuff-Works have what we think are the most logical explana-tions for how they accomplish all that they do. Although elves might have a natural drive for crafting everything from wooden rocking horses to Xbox 360s, we assume that they would still have to at-tend elf school. Technology is always changing, though, and Santa’s elves would need to know everything from tradi-tional toy-making to the most current and up-to-date com-puter games. That’s why elves would need to continue taking classes even after they gradu-ated. With all the hustle and bustle leading up to Christ-mas, would Santa’s elves ever get a break? Once Christmas is over, there would still be a few more days of work - Santa couldn’t be perfect and might mix presents up, so the elves would take care of refunds, re-turns and exchanges. By New Year’s Day, the elves might be ready for a break, though, and they’d head out on a much-deserved vacation.

News BitesFranklin, Tuakau& Pokeno rising

Values ‘fair’Auckland Council and

Quotable Value say there is no justification to suggest that 30 per cent of Auckland properties recently reval-ued are ‘wildly wrong’.

Kevin Ramsay, Auckland Council’s Chief Finance Officer said the claim by a Hawke’s Bay based valu-ation company was itself ‘wildly wrong’, factually in-accurate and does not stand up to scrutiny.

He said the company’s claim that the valuations don’t accurately reflect sales in October is misleading. The council valuations are based on sales and data pre-July and the market may well have changed in the four months to the end of October.

“In any mass appraisal ex-ercise of 525 000 properties there are bound to be some anomalies, but the revalu-ation process is a fair and equitable exercise and the objection process allows for any potential anomalies to be reviewed.”

He said if property own-ers think their valuation is incorrect compared to sales prior to July 2014 then they should exercise their objec-tions rights.

Franklin District’s house values are up 2.8% over the past three months and 11.1% since this time last year. Values in Franklin are now 21.4% higher than the previous peak of 2007 ac-cording to the latest month-ly QV Residential Price Movement Index.

QV Home Value Regis-tered Valuer, Nicky Harris said areas such as Pokeno and Tuakau, have also seen some big increases which is likely to be due to the ‘Auck-land effect’ as people head further out of the Super City to find affordable homes.

The Auckland housing market was its most active for the past six months in November, with house sales numbers climbing by 17.7 percent over those for the previous month, the average selling price setting a new high of $756,909 and the median price also reach-ing its highest level ever at $691,500.

“For the previous three months the un-certainty that always exists around general election time was influencing sales, but the market put that behind itself by November,” said Peter Thompson, Managing Director of Barfoot & Thompson.

“November is normally one of the strong-est sales months of the year, and has proved to be again this year.

“Attendance at auctions was extremely high, there was keen buyer demand and new listings were strong.

“It added up to a buoyant month’s trading

that saw the average price increase by 2.8 percent over that for October, and it was 10.6 percent higher than the average price in No-vember last year.

“Sales at 1105 for the month were the high-est since May, and were 18.1 percent higher than the average number of sales we have achieved monthly over the previous three months.

“The current record sales prices are not proving a deterrent to buyers, with demand at the top end of the market being extremely strong.

“We sold 225 homes for in excess of $1 mil-lion, only the second month we have ever sold more than 200 homes in a month in this price segment,” he added.

“This year, we have sold a third more homes in the $1 million plus category than we did at the same point last year.”

Police recover hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of stolen property, but many items cannot be returned to the owners because the owners did not record the serial numbers, says Con-stable Jane Palmer.

“Worse still, we have to leave it with the thief!” she adds.

“With Christmas coming up, the fine weather coming (hopefully), people going on holidays and longer days, more and more offenders will be out and about. We have to be vigilant when it comes to property.

“When my colleagues and I are checking records and completing search warrants we have a greater chance of locating stolen property if the serial numbers are re-corded.

“Recording your serial number is as easy as writ-ing the make, model, serial numbers and description on a piece of paper or in a book and putting it in a safe place

“The other trend in rural areas is an increase in shed burglaries; theft of mo-torbikes, quad bikes, farm bikes, and tools. Lock your shed, take the keys out of the bikes and hide them, chain the bikes up.

“Scrap metal theft is also common in rural areas. If someone comes asking to take away your scrap metal or offers to buy it, ask them for their Second-hand Deal-er Licence. People dealing in second-hand goods must have a licence.

Maraes are sacred histori-cal places that often contain carvings and artefacts that would be irreplaceable in the event of a fire.

As most maraes are con-structed from timber and many are located in remote locations, they are particu-larly vulnerable to fire.

Protecting maraes from the risk of fire requires both careful planning and techni-cal knowledge.

Consideration must also be given to a marae’s herit-age buildings which in some cases can be over 100 years old. Inadequate or improper fire protection can also ex-pose the marae’s community to danger, lead to potential injury or, in a worst case sce-nario, loss of life.

According to the NZ Fire Service, fewer than 20 per-cent of maraes have a fire safety system installed, and only recently a marae in Taumarunui was sadly lost

Cultural treasures at risk of devastating firedue to fire. To help marae trustees protect their build-ings against the risk of fire, Wormald has the following advice:

• Conduct a fire safety au-dit: a comprehensive fire safety audit will highlight potential fire risks around the facility and help to de-termine the fire protection solutions required. Fire haz-ards in maraes will vary de-pending on the marae facili-ties but in general will extend to the wharekai, wharenui and any ancillary structures. Considerations include kitchen or heating appli-ances, electrical equipment and switch boards, flam-mable liquids, and sleeping environments. A fire protec-tion specialist will help iden-tify hazards and recommend appropriate fire protection solutions. A fire safety check-list can also be downloaded from the Wormald website.

• Keep up to date with regulation and legislation: Marae trustees should un-derstand their ethical and legal fire safety requirements as listed on the marae’s building compliance sched-ule, and be aware of the fire safety regulations and New Zealand standards relating to fire safety and fire pro-tection equipment, mainte-nance and training.

• Install adequate fire pro-tection equipment: there is a wide range of fire protection equipment available from basic fire extinguishers and

fire hose reels, to passive fire solutions such as fire doors and more advanced fire de-tection and suppression sys-tems.

• Service and mainte-nance: when it comes to fire protection, a high level of reliability is essential. Fire protection systems and equipment should always perform to the standard to which they were originally designed and installed.

Regular testing can vali-date the functionality of fire protection systems and equipment and help un-cover any faults or issues that may cause malfunction. Also check that fire hoses are in good condition with-out any cracks, and that fire

extinguishers are regularly tested.

• Provide appropriate signage: all hazards, fire protection equipment and emergency exits, fire extin-guishers and other fire safety equipment should be clearly marked. Emergency exits signs should be visible so that in the event of an evacu-ation, all building occupants can escape quickly.

•Training: Marae trustees should appoint a fire warden who knows how to respond to a fire emergency and knows how to use the fire equipment on-site.

Among other awards, Nigel Griffiths was named as the organisation’s Volunteer of the Year, and there were also certificates presented to supporters of the group. Associate Transport Minister Craig Foss has announced a review of parts of New Zealand’s driver licensing system.

“A lot has changed since the current driver licens-ing system was intro-duced in 1999.

The review will look at modernising the system by making it more cus-tomer-focused and reduc-ing compliance costs,” Mr Foss says.

“It will consider wheth-er the heavy vehicle driver licensing process could be simplified by reducing the number of heavy ve-hicle classes and related endorsements.”

Mr Foss says while fun-damental elements of the licensing system will not be reviewed, such as the photo driver licence and the minimum licensing age, there are a number of opportunities to make the

system easier to under-stand and use.

“For example, the re-view is an opportunity to consider online licence renewals and whether the full licence test needs to evolve, given the recent changes to make the re-stricted test more diffi-cult,” Mr Foss says.

Any proposed changes to the law will be con-sulted on and progressed in 2016.

Associate Transport Minister Craig Foss says changes to the Graduated Driver Licensing System (GDLS) which came into force last week will en-courage drivers and mo-torcyclists to sit their full licence.

Changes to the Land Transport (Driver Licens-ing) Rule require driv-ers or riders sitting their

learner or restricted li-cences to progress to the next stage of the GDLS within five years. Any-one who fails to do so will need to pass another theory test to renew their licence.

“Too many drivers and riders have been staying at the learner or restricted stage indefinitely – that was never the intention of

the GDLS,” Mr Foss says.“The five year time limit

for learner and restricted licences is part of the Government’s strategy to continue improving driv-ing standards, increasing the safety of young mo-torists and bringing down the road toll.”

Those on full licences will be unaffected by the change.

Petrol prices fell 8 cents per litre during November, with the price of 91 octane ending the month on $2.06 per litre at most outlets. Diesel fell 6 cents to end the month on $1.38 per litre. Fuel prices subsequently fell another 3 cents per litre on 1 December.

“We’ve had nine straight price cuts in a row since 10 October, with petrol prices falling 19 cents per litre, and diesel 17 cents,” says AA PetrolWatch spokesper-son Mark Stockdale.

“Motorists are now paying the lowest petrol prices since July 2012, and the lowest diesel prices since December 2010. The lower pump prices reflect continuing falls in international commod-ity prices, which are now at their lowest level in over four years.

According to AA PetrolWatch, the average owner of a medium-sized car will be saving about $200 a year in petrol costs at cur-rent prices, compared to early October.

In the first 11 months of the year, 242,453 new and used imported vehicles have been registered. This is a 21% increase over units sold to the same time last year. Last year saw a total of 218,329 vehicles sold. MTA Chief Executive War-wick Quinn says the mar-ket for new and used im-ported vehicles has seen a strong 11 months, with no reason to expect any slow-ing down for December.

“We anticipate seeing over a quarter of a million vehicles imported and sold in 2014. All sectors have also been seeing sustained growth. New passenger, new commercial, used imported passenger, and used imported commer-cial are all flying,” Quinn says.

Auckland Council is clamping down on win-dow washers’ intimidating behaviour at intersections throughout the city and is targeting repeat offenders.

The council has begun pursuing the prosecution of window washers found to be in breach of the Pub-lic Safety and Nuisance By-law. The bylaw came into effect six months ago.

“When the bylaw first came in staff took an edu-cational approach with offenders, focusing on vol-untary compliance. How-ever this has not deterred people window washing in an unsafe way, which makes drivers feel uncom-fortable and even threat-ened, so council is taking a tougher line,” says Max Wilde, Manager Bylaws and Compliance.

A new road safety cam-paign launched yesterday by Hamilton City Council reminds city motorists to stop safely at red lights to avoid crashes and traffic jams.

“Use your head, stop on red” is the message Coun-cil is reinforcing, in con-junction with NZ Police. The campaign, includ-ing billboard advertising, radio and social media messages, highlights the importance of stopping safely for red lights and not entering intersections on a yellow light.

Stopping drink driving crashes is going to take more than just reducing the adult drink driving limit, says the Automobile Association.

The adult (20 and older) limit lowered to 50mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood (.05) on December 1 and the AA supports this change, saying the old limit allowed people that were im-paired to still be legal to drive and the lower limit r e i n f o r c e s the message to the public that drinking and driving is unacceptable.

However, for New Zealand to really reduce the number of people hurt by drink drivers, there are other changes in the way that of-fenders are dealt with that need to happen.

“Catching drink drivers is not the problem. The prob-lem is that what we’re doing once we catch them isn’t working,” says AA Motor-ing Affairs General Manager Mike Noon.

An AA Research Founda-tion report last year showed that 11,979 or 51.2% of the drink drivers caught in 2012

were repeat offenders.“A lot of drink drivers are

people with serious alcohol issues who aren’t in control of their drinking. Taking away their driving licence is not effective enough at keeping these people off the road and putting innocent

lives at risk,” says Mr Noon.

“High risk drink drivers

should have to have al-cohol in-t e r l o c k s fitted to their vehi-cles. These

only allow a person who is

100% sober to use the car. The courts

also need to do much more assessment of drink drivers for alcohol problems so that people with issues can have treatment combined with their sentence.

“More alcohol interlocks in drink drivers’ vehicles and treatment will do more to prevent crashes than the lower limit.”

Alcohol interlocks are de-vices like breathalysers that drivers have to use before and during a drive.

They became a sentencing option in New Zealand in

The Mazda3 was named as the New Zea-land Car of the Year at an event hosted by the AA and the NZ Motoring Writers’ Guild at Auckland’s Viaduct Events Centre last week. The compact car beat the nine other finalists to take the ultimate award ahead of a pack of six SUVs, a small and large car and a perfor-mance car.

AA Motoring Services General Manager Stella Stocks says the Mazda3 has become a Kiwi favourite with a wide range of models to suit a broad range of motorists.

The Mazda3 also took out the Best in Class Compact Car award ahead of other top con-tenders the VW Golf and Ford Focus.

Separate to the selection of the New Zea-land Car of the Year for 2014, the judges voted on nine vehicle categories – from small car to luxury SUV – with a 10th category going to the safest car, an award provided to the vehi-cle that receive the highest Australasian New Car Assessment Programme (ANCAP) rating for both crash test performance and pedes-

VTNZ announced yester-day (Monday), it has been chosen as the preferred sup-plier by the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) to take over all practical driver testing from May 1 next year.

People can already apply for or renew a driver’s li-cence at 25 out of VTNZ’s 82 stations nationwide – now the company will be able to

test them as well.“We’re excited to have an-

other opportunity to posi-tively influence safety on our roads,” says CEO Mike Walsh.

“We want to improve peo-ple’s experience of the test-ing process, just as we have with other services, and the aim is a process that’s sim-pler, clearer and more acces-

sible for everyone. We’ll be working closely with the NZ Transport Agency to ensure the integrity and consist-ency of the process.”

“VTNZ already performs over 1,000,000 car and truck inspections in New Zealand every year, as well as a host of other services, such as pre-purchase inspections and roadside assistance.”

trian safety between October 1, 2013 and September 30, 2014. This year, the Safest Car is the Mercedes-Benz C-Class.

New drink-drive limit not enough says AA2012 but, out of 11,692 eligi-ble offenders that appeared before the courts in their first year, just 228 received an in-terlock licence.

The AA wants all repeat drink drivers or those caught at twice the criminal limit to have an interlock fitted to their vehicle. The revenue from the fines from drivers caught at alcohol levels be-tween .05 to .08 under the new limit should also be used to fund more interlocks for the highest risk offenders.

“High risk drink drivers

should have to have alcohol interlocks fitted to their vehicles. These only

allow a person who is 100% sober to use

the car.”

Over twenty U16 Second-ary School rugby players have been involved in a de-velopment program through the Counties Manukau Rug-by Union.

The specialist programme incorporated physical com-ponents delivered by the Counties Manukau High Performance Unit trainers Tony Burgess, Seb Graham, Academy Manager Nick Leger, Rugby Development Officer’s Dameon Chaney and Jeremy Wara and Chiefs Player Identification Man-ager Dave Dillon.

The program, which pro-vided a number of presenta-tions regarding professional rugby, is run over a five week block with the aim of get-ting young Counties Manu-kau players into good habits moving forward through for representative programs and potentially into the Steelers.

It provides the CMRFU staff the opportunity to build positive relationships with the up and coming tal-ent while introducing them to the High Performance en-vironment and the Counties Manukau culture.

Two local schools were fi-nalists in the recent School of the Year categories of the 2014 Counties Manukau Sporting Excellence Awards held at the Vodafone Events Centre.

Pukekohe High School and Onewhero Area School were among 10 schools from the region who were final-ists, with the eventual win-ners named as Bairds Main-freight Primary School and Aorere College.

At Pukekohe High School coaching-specific pro-grammes and referee um-piring courses are run throughout the year; NCEA Accreditation for courses adds value to qualifications and Year 13 Sports Lead-ership students provide coaches and officials for many of the sports teams.

Across the board partici-pation numbers have grown from 35% to 47% this year and the overall performance of teams and individuals

within the school has im-proved dramatically.

Students have become excellent role models and are prepared to assist with coaching and officiating, and there have been many examples of students and teams succeeding at region-al and national representa-tive level.

At Onewhero Area School the teachers, parents and community are passionate about sport and work to-gether to develop the poten-tial in all their students.

The school this year in-troduced a Sports Academy and an Elective Hour where a netball officiating course was offered.

Close links formed with lo-cal clubs sees the school uti-lising all local grounds and amenities; and initiatives such as basketball being in-troduced have seen team numbers evolve from 1-8 teams competing at Puke-kohe Recreation Centre.

Waiuku Tennis had mixed results last weekend playing Saturday Interclub:

Grade 1: Waiuku vs Pa-tumahoe Mahoe – lost 6-0, Grade 2: Waiuku vs Puke-kohe East – Won 4-2, Grade 3: Waiuku vs Pukekohe East – Won 5-1, Grade 4: Waiuku vs Pukekohe East Breakers – Lost 2-4, Grade 5: Waiuku Gold vs Pokeno Baconeers – Won 5-1, Grade 5: Waiuku Blue vs Pukekohe East Vol-leys – Lost 6-0, Grade 6: Wai-uku vs Pokeno Hamstarz – Won 6-3.

The Waiuku Bowling Club is bucking the trend of many similar clubs as it has enjoyed an increase in club membership in recent weeks, and is working on a variety of proposals to re-vitalise the club and grow interest in the sport in the region.

The club recently held its Aldred Stars competitions, with the winners announced as Mark Bungard and Brian Palmer.

The championship pairs competitions were also held recently, and the winners of the Ladies Section were Marama Onehi and Bette Holmes.

Runners-up were Andrea Williams and Jenny Palmer.

In the Mens section this year, the winners were Braden Lowe and Jackie

Members of the Waiuku College cricket team were still fund raising with two weeks to go until they attend an interna-tional secondary schools cricket tourna-ment in Melbourne.

The boys have worked very hard over the last year to raise funds for this trip, and with help from parents they have put their hands to all sorts of activities to pay their way.

“It has been a great team building exercise. The boys are ready to put their talents to the test against other teams from around the world,” a member of the team’s management said.

“Here they can be seen painting a fence for Osborne’s Realty who kindly gave a great donation to the boys. A special thanks to them and everyone else who helped out in any way at all.”

It was a special Sunday for one of Waiuku Rugby’s favourite sons on Sunday when Kevin Laing, or ‘Laingie’ as he is known, re-ceived an award for outstanding service to the club.

Kevin started playing for Waiuku Rugby Club in 1957 for the under-fives through to the under-12s before health issues forced him to give up playing.

However, despite not being able to con-tinue his on-field career, Kevin over the years has made an immense contribution to club administration.

In his time with Waiuku Rugby he has managed the Waiuku Under 23 side, and was time-keeper for touch rugby for eight years. He has served many years on the committee and was club delegate to Coun-ties from 1998 to 2000.

In 2006 he was elected on to the sup-porters Club Committee and was president of this from 2008 until 2014. He has lately been club registrar for all teams in club competition from 2010 to 2014.

On Sunday at the Rugby Club Kevin was presented with his award by president Maurice Brighouse. And then, to cap it off, also on Sunday Laingie had the chance to catch up with Santa Claus (Dave Grim-mond under the beard and suit), during a Christmas visit at the Franklin Memorial Hospital in Waiuku!
