Post-Test Interpretation Variations

The ASVAB Career Exploration Program is all about options. Because post-secondary success looks different for everyone, Post-Test Interpretations can and should be tailored based on the makeup of the audience and their perceptions and aspirations. Being informed about the various components included in the OCCU-Find allows you to elevate your audience's awareness level about the possibilities so that you can help students find meaningful resources to explore their options and develop their unique plans.

• Encourage students to participate in the ASVAB CEP to identify aptitude and work-related interests, determine occupations for which they are best suited, and build a post-secondary plan.

• When discussing scores, mention that these are a snapshot in time, and can be improved through additional study. Encourage students to review their aptitude and their current coursework when evaluating careers of interest.

• Pertinent information is organized in one place so students can investigate multiple pathways to an eventual career goal and have realistic conversations with influencers about goals and plans.

• Highlight the various paths to career attainment and the benefits of each when discussing How To Get There. Ask students if they have thought about all of the paths they can take to get where they want to go.

• Students in 11th grade and beyond interested in exploring the Military get a usable score for enlistment. Then, they can research and compare each Service and their job offerings. This puts the power in the students' hands.

• Use planning tools on the dashboard under Step 3 to build resumes, collect content for applications, plan coursework or inspire service projects.

• ASVAB CEP is not just a test and score interpretation. This program and its resources are meant to be used multiple times by students, counselors, and parents throughout the career exploration process.

How to Use the ASVAB Career Exploration Program

“The ASVAB CEP has benefitted so many students in so many ways on their career path. I believe in this program and everything about it, and the people that work for it – it’s very helpful.”

Gemile Fleming, Colorado School Counselor of the Year

Review planning tools

• The level of education required for entry as reported by those working in the job is presented in the How to Get There section.

• Evaluate the program of study associated with the occupation of interest. Have students consider whether their skills align with the coursework outlined.

• Encourage students to review the admission information included on the institution details pages (i.e., SAT and ACT averages, percentage of returning students, tuition, etc.).

• Encourage students to consider how they will pay for their post-secondary endeavors. Have them consider the cost of in-state versus out-of-state tuition, room and board, and meal plans. Point out the More Resources links to FAFSA, Fastweb, CollegeCalc, and Living Wage Calculator.

• Planning tools like My Portfolio and Coursework Planner allow students to compile and evaluate achievements to date, areas for improvement, and coursework to complete.

“I know a few kids who are going to enlist, and for them, they’re excited because they know where they’ll be headed after basic training. For Jill, ASVAB showed her places she could be successful.”

• Work-based learning (i.e., Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs, apprenticeship programs, licensure, etc.) enhances classroom learning by connecting it to the workplace.

• Students might be less familiar with this option so highlight it for those who are not committed to the financial and time obligations required of college or military.

• Work-based learning can be a springboard for the final destination. Information about this path and credential title and certifying organizations can be found in the How To Get There section.

• Encourage students to evaluate the Employment Outlook for occupations they can enter with a work-based learning credential. Skilled trade jobs are in demand. Some of the fastest growing occupations do not require a college degree. Look for the sun icon associated with Bright Outlook occupations.

EXPLORING CAREER CLUSTERS

Parents may have assumptions about the ASVAB CEP, specifically the military affiliation. Their involvement in their child’s career exploration is critical.

Encourage them to:

• Share any experiences they've had with career planning and listen to what their teen has to say about his or her interests, skills, and values.

• Explore potential occupations together or review the results of his/her individual search together.

• Encourage their teen to explore several occupations and all kinds of post-secondary opportunities and discuss the pros and cons of the different options.

• Encourage experiential learning opportunities to further explore a given occupation.

Students have no obligation to the Military as a result of taking the ASVAB and participation is always voluntary.

“There are so many different options available. We looked at colleges, certifications, apprenticeships, licensures - there’s so many different ways to become educated.”

Faith Durden, Buffalo, NY MEPS ESS

“The OCCU-Find tool was particularly useful as was the Portfolio feature. My son advises upcoming high school students to really benefit from that. It's a proactive feature that serves as a framework for exploring careers.”

Patrick Rottinghaus, Ph.D.

There are opportunities to teach real-life lessons in every classroom.

The ASVAB CEP is designed to support education and career counseling for students as they learn career decision-making skills. A series of classroom activities was created to help educators integrate the program into their classroom.

These activities help participants develop resume writing skills and generate content for college essays or their LinkedIn profile, evaluate the cost of their postsecondary plan and figure out ways to finance their plan, and assess long term growth and decline of career choices as well as consider how family members’ career choices may (or may not) have influenced their own.

The Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) promotes activities to support well-rounded educational opportunities, which include career awareness and exploration activities, as well as postsecondary education guidance.

The interactive student activities are the most effective ways to reinforce lessons learned in the classroom (regardless of subject matter) so that students have the opportunity to relate what they’re learning to the real world.
