ThedominantteatureIn theareaia thevalleyof theriverBadderelvarunningapproximatelyeast-westbeforeturningnorthto reachthecoastat Badderen.Mostof theotherriversdrainIn a nort-aouthdirectionintotheBadderolva.On bothsidesofthemainrivervalleythegroundrisessteeply,especiallyonthenorthside,toglvathemountainsnedreHoankaandøvreHoanka.Mostof therivershavetheirsourcein oneof theusnymountaInlakes.
Oeologyls oftenrelatedto topography,thegeneraltrendbeingin a northsouthdirection,andmanyof theriversondlakesmark geologicalboundarlesforaomewayalongthoirlength.
TheAlta- Kvaenangentoctonicwindowls an arecof Pzbac3mbrianrockssurroundedby overthrustCaledonides.Thearetwoformationsoutcroppingin thiswindow.TheRalpasBormationis a seriesof lavas,pillowlavas,dolerites,volcaniclastica,enddolomiticconglomeratesuhichhovobeextmeta-morphosedonlyup to greenachistgrade.Minerallsationoccursintheaerocksbutismuchmorepronouncedin thcoldmlningareas,totheeastaroundtheBergmastanti-cline.
TheBossekopFormationlieswithmarkedunconfolaltyon theRalpasFormation,andla thoughtto be Eocambrianin age. It consista
11. of interbeddedquartziteandshalebedsup to 30 u, andbearsa markedresemblenceto aomeof theFormationsof theTanatjordOrompInEastFinnmark,butthisis onlyspeculative.
Theexistenceot a tillitein theareais queationable.Verylocalpatchesof conglomerateoccurnearthebaseof theLossekopForma-tion4butareunlikelytobe ot glacialorigha.Howevera poorlysortedangularconglomerateof possibleglacialoriginwasfoundin theextremesouthof thearea,althoughitsstrucuralpositionwasinvestigated.
Thesetwoformationahavebeenoverthustby a Calodonideachistwhichoutcropsto thenorthendsouthof thearoa.

The areawas originallymappedby Zenzånin 1915an a scaleof1:100000,and much laterby theN.G.U.in 1965,on a scaleof1:50000. Howeverthe lattermap was foundto be of verylittleuse.An Indiangeologisthas mappedthe Bergmarkareafor A/S Blelk-
vassliGrUberin 1970,and futhereastin theKåfjord-Alta-areaa Swissgeologist,Mr. AndråGautier,has made a geologicalmapfor ChristianiaSpigerverk.

Lodgingwas in an old housein Badderenand in a tentto map themore remoteareas. Threefieldassistantsworkedwith the But-hor as streamsedimentsamplersfor a periodof throoweeka.Theytooksamplesfromall of themajorstreamsin theareaandalsofromthosefurtherto the west.
STRATIGRAPHY
The Raipas Formationis Precambrianin age,andaceordingtoReitan,of Karelianage. Somestromatoliticdolomitevas foundand handspecimennumber50 may containa prinitivecoralorspongealthoughthlsis by no meanscertain.
The listof rock-typesdescribedon the map arenot in stratigrap-hicalorderand can occurin differenthorizons.Howeverthe grey-blackgraphiticsiltstoneseemsto representonsstratigraphicalhorizon,althoughotherthinblacksiltstonebandsoccurthroughoutthe formation,but not on a mapnablescale.Withinthe RalpasFormationfurtherto the east,twm serieshavebeenrecognisedby Zenz6n(1915); a lowergreenstoneseriesover-lainby a greyquartzite.HoweverLn the areamapped,onlytheformerwas foundto be present.
The BossekopFormationis of presumedEocambrianage (Reitan1960)althoughno fossilshaveeverbeenfoundto giveatreciseage.

PETROGBAPHYANDMETAMORPHISM
Rocksot theRaipasFormationareof lowmetamorphicgrade(green-ach1atto albite-epidotefacies)whichoftenenablesoriginaldeposi-tionalfeaturessuchas cross-bedding,gradedbedding,ripplemarkaandpillowatructuresto be seen.
TheBossekopFormationhaasufferedverylittlemetamorphism.In theRelpasFormatlontendifferentrocktypeswerefoundto occur.

1, Bas c lavaaWh1chveryfromfine-grainedtilltheygradeintodolerites.
2. P 11w la of basalticcomposition.
Maas doleritesof darklahgreencolour,weatheringbrownegreen.A black ticsiltstoneoutcroppingin thecentralpart
of theareaandof about20 - 30m, thickneas.Thisformstheonlygoodmarkerhorlzonwhichcanbe followedforanyUstance,faintlaminationswereseenoccasionally,andthisrocktypeprobablyrepre-sentsa relativelylongperiodof volcanicquiescenceduringwhichonlypelagicmaterialwasdepositedin thesea. Thepercentageofgraphiteis probablyonlyamall.
Masalvetuffsof sh en colourandcon smallf -1222. Therearenumeroustuffbedsoccuringin betweenlavaflowsbutmostaretoosmallto be markedon themap, Theboundarlesbetweentuff,lavaanddoleriteproveda majorproblemin thefteld,andfor
11 greateraccuracythinsectlonswouldhaveto be made.
Greenlah- horzon laminatedmudstones.Thesearetuffites in thattheyareof thesamecompoaltionas mostof thebasalticlavas.In mostcaseatheyarejusthorizontallylamlnatedln bedsof about1 cm,butoccasionalrlpplesarefound.Eachbedprobablyrepreaentsthefall-outfroma volcaniceruption.
G • h- or -blacktuffbreccias.Theyareunbeddedand cartalnangalarclasto,setin a veryflne-gralnedmatrix.Mcstof theclastaaresmall,<5 cm,butthetuffbrecclaoutcropping1n theBadderelvacontainsclastsup to 75 cm ofmalnlydolomitesill-stoneandigneouscomposition.Theseclastsprobablyrepresentsacciden-talvolcanicejectaandselsadcactivitybringingmaterialInt°a quietwaterenvironment.

pelagicunithorizontallylaminatedunitripplecross-laminationherizontallylpmingtedunitgradedunit
Northof the Badderelvaintra-formationalconglomeratesoccuratthe baseof the gradedunit,auggestingtearingup of the bedbeneathby the turbiditycurrent. The factthata completeBoumasequenceis seenindicatesa distalturbidite.
C omeraticand dolomiticsandstones,medium-grninedand of a ught greenishcolour. Theseare sometimescross-beddedwithshallowchannels.Clastsaremeinlyof dolomite(stromatolitic)and greensiltstone,the alltstoneclastsoftenbeingelongated.The conglomeratescanbe verypoerlysortedwithclastof up tometrwoccurringwithmuch smallerclasts< 2 cm in a sandymatrix.Completebedsof dolomiteup to 3 m thiCkoccasiorn11,are seen,but seemto be verylenticular.Thisunitwas probablydepositedin a veryshallowmarineenvirons• mentwith fluvialinfluence,
Dolomiticlimestone,buffweatheringand outcroppingonly inthe extramewestof the area.
The rocksof the BossekopFormationconsistof crossbeddedquart-zitesand shalesindicatinga ahallowmarineenvironment,

The dominantstructureis one of north-southtrendingfolds. Theareasouthof the BadderelvaaroundLausfjelletis of greatcon-plexityconsistingof isoclinalfoldsleaningto thewastwhichhavebeenbentand refolded.Thrustinghas alsooccuredin thisregion.Howeverin the north-eastof the areathe foldpattealseemsto bedifferent.Apartfromthenorth-southtrendthereis alsoadominanteast-westor northiewestsouth-easttrend,suggestingthatthereare twomain interfering phasesin the region.

Herethemaintrendis N.W.-S.E.changingtoEast-Westin theextremesouthas oneapproachestheoverthrustCaledonides.Asecondphaseof foldinghasalsoaffectedtheformation,makingthequartziteandshalebodsdieoutandreappearmainidbentollowedalongstrike.
It is notknownhowthefoldsin theBossekopFormationrelatetothosein theunderlyingRaipasFormation.
ECONOMICGEOLOGY
411 Minsralisationhasaffectedtherocksof tbeRaipaaFormationbutnottheBossekopFormation,indicatingthatthemineralisationisof Precambrianage.Themainareasof mineralisationarein theBergmarkant3c1inejuatto theeastandsout-eastof theareainvestigated,andalsoatMiddavarreto thenortheast. Themainpurposeof themappingwas to seeif thismineralisationcontinuedintotheauthor'sarea.Smallareasof mineralisationwerefound,butareunlitelyto beof anyeconomicinterests
a. Intheconglomeraticanddolomiticsandstonean areaofdissemination-typeminenlisationwasfound,butthisconsistedmainlyof smallsoatteredpyritecryatals.
b. Thegrey•blackgraphiticsiltstoneoutcroppingin theBadder-elvais intemselydeformedandhasveinsof calcitecontainingaverylittlepyriteandchalcopyrite.Thevoinshoweverarelessthan20 cm thickandnotof economicimportance.
Theareaof greatestdeformationaroundLausfjelletandcontt-nuingsouthhasmanyquartzveinsup to 2 metresthickrunningthroughtherocks,butno accompanyingmetallicdepositawerefound.
Southof theBadderelvaa talcveinwaafoundin a dolerite,sandwichedbetweentwographiticsillatonebeds. Theveinwasupto a metrethickandranin a northeaouthdirectionalongstrikeforabout1 km beforsdyingout. It alsocarrieda littlemala-chite.

e. Otheramallareasof disseminationtypeminnalisationareshownon themap,butareconsideredto be of no economicinterest.
It is of theauthor'sopinionthattheminaralisationis associatrednotwithareasofmaximumdeformationbutwithareasof updaningcausedby theinterterenceot thetwomajorfoldaxes(aN- S axisandan E-Wto S.E.-N.W.axis)of thearea. ThiscouldaccauntfOrthamineralisationin theBergmarkanticlineandatNiddavarre.TheNorthsSouthtrand dominantin thewestandtheEast-Weat
11 trendin theeast.In themiddleiterebothhaveapproximatelyequalinfluencethemineralisationseamsto haveoccurred.Updomingfavourathefor-mationof manytensioncracksthroughwhichtheminenaisationvelnacanrun.
GeophysicalworkusingOeigercountersfalledto detectanyradio-aktivedepositsin theares.
Thereaultsof analysieof thestreamsedimentsamplesuerenotknownat thetimeof writingthisreport.
