S Keep all parts of your body away from thechain when the engine is running.

S Keep children, bystanders, and animals aminimum of 30 feet (10meters) away fromthe work area. Do not allow other peopleor animals to be near the chain saw whenstarting or operating the chain saw.

S Do not handle or operate a chain saw whenyou are fatigued, ill, or upset, or if you havetaken alcohol, drugs, or medication. Youmust be in good physical conditionand men-tally alert. Chain saw work is strenuous. If you have any condition that might be aggra-vated by strenuous work, check with yourdoctor before operating a chain saw.

S Carefully planyour sawing operation inad-vance. Do not start cutting untilyou have aclear work area, secure footing, and, if youare felling trees, a planned retreat path.

OPERATE YOUR SAW SAFELY S Do not operate a chain saw with one hand.

Serious injury to the operator, helpers, by-standers or any combination of these per-sons may result from one-handed opera-tion. A chain saw is intended fortwo-handed use.

S Operate the chain saw only in a well-venti-lated outdoor area.

S Do not operate saw from a ladder or in atree.

S Make sure the chain will not make contactwith any object while starting the engine.Never try to start the saw when the guidebar is in a cut.

S Do not put pressure on the saw at the endof the cut. Applying pressure can causeyou to lose control when the cut is com-pleted.

S Stop the engine before setting the sawdown.

S Do not operate a chain saw that is dam-aged, improperly adjusted, or not com-pletely and securely assembled. Alwaysreplace bar, chain, hand guard, or chainbrakeimmediately if it becomes damaged,broken or is otherwise removed.

S With the engine stopped, hand carry thechain saw with the muffler away from yourbody, and the guide bar and chain to therear, preferably covered with a scabbard.

MAINTAIN YOUR SAW IN GOODWORKING ORDERS Have allchainsaw service performed by a

qualified service dealer with the exceptionof the items listed in the maintenance sec-tionof this manual. Forexample, if improp-er tools are used to remove or hold the fly-wheel whenservicing the clutch, structuraldamage to the flywheel can occur andcause the flywheel to burst.

S Make certain the saw chain stops movingwhen the throttle trigger is released. Forcorrection, refer to CARBURETOR AD-JUSTMENT.

S Never modify your saw in any way.S Keep the handles dry, clean, and free of oil

or fuel mixture.S Keep fuel and oil caps, screws, and fas-

teners securely tightened.S Use only Poulan PRO R accessories and

replacement parts as recommended.HANDLE FUEL WITH CAUTIONS Do not smoke while handling fuel or while

operating the saw.S Eliminate all sources of sparks or flame in

the areas where fuel is mixed or poured.There should be nosmoking, openflames,or work that couldcause sparks. Allowen-gine to cool before refueling.

S Mix and pour fuel in an outdoor area onbare ground; store fuel in a cool, dry, wellventilated place; and use an approved,marked container for all fuel purposes.

Wipe up all fuel spills before starting saw.S Move at least 10 feet (3 meters) from fuel-

ing site before starting engine.S Turn the engine off and let saw cool in a

non-combustible area, not on dry leaves,straw, paper, etc. Slowly remove fuel capand refuel unit.

S Store theunit andfuel in anarea wherefuelvapors cannot reach sparks or openflames from water heaters, electric motorsor switches, furnaces, etc.

KICKBACK

WARNING: Avoid kickback whichcan result in serious injury. Kickback is thebackward,upward or sudden forward motionof the guide bar occurring when the sawchain near the uppertip of theguide bar con-tacts any object such as a log or branch, orwhen the wood closes in and pinches thesaw chain in the cut. Contacting a foreign object in the wood can also result in loss of chain saw control.S Rotational Kickback can occur when the

moving chain contacts an object at theup-per tip of the guide bar. This contact cancause the chain to dig into the object,which stops the chain for an instant. Theresult is a lightning fast, reverse reactionwhich kicks the guide bar up and back to-ward the operator.

S Pinch-Kickback can occur when the thewood closes in and pinches the movingsaw chain in the cut along the top of theguide bar and the saw chain is suddenlystopped. This sudden stopping of thechain results in a reversal of the chainforce used to cut wood and causes thesawto move inthe oppositedirection ofthechain rotation. The saw is driven straightback toward the operator.

S Pull-In can occur when the moving chaincontacts a foreign object in the wood in thecut along the bottom of the guide bar and thesaw chain is suddenly stopped. This suddenstopping pulls the saw forward and awayfrom theoperatorandcould easily cause theoperator to lose control of the saw.

Avoid Pinch--Kickback:S Be extremely aware of situations or ob-structions thatcan causematerial to pinchthe top of or otherwise stop the chain.

S Do not cut more than one log at a time.S Do not twist the saw as the bar is with-

drawn from an undercut when bucking.Avoid Pull--In:S Always begin cutting with theengine at full

speed andthe saw housing against wood.S Use wedges made of plastic or wood.

Never use metal to hold the cut open.

Clear The Working Area

Avoid Obstructions

REDUCE THE CHANCE OFKICKBACK S Recognize that kickback can happen.

With a basic understanding of kickback,you can reduce the element of surprise

which contributes to accidents.S Never letthe moving chaincontact any object at the tip of the guide bar.

S Keep the working area free from obstruc-tions suchas othertrees,branches, rocks,fences, stumps, etc. Eliminate or avoidany obstruction that your saw chain couldhit while you are cutting. When cutting abranch, do not let the guide bar contactbranch or other objects around it.

S Keep your saw chain sharp and properlytensioned. A loose or dull chain can in-crease the chance of kickback occurring.Follow manufacturers chain sharpeningandmaintenance instructions. Check ten-sion at regular intervals with the enginestopped, never with the engine running.Make sure the bar nuts are securely tight-ened after tensioning the chain.

S Begin and continue cutting at full speed. If the chain is moving at a slower speed,there is greater chance of kickback occur-ring.

S Cut one log at a time.S Use extreme caution when re-entering a

previous cut.S Do not attempt cuts starting with the tip of

the bar (plunge cuts).S Watch for shifting logs or other forces that

could close a cut and pinch or fall intochain.

S Use the Reduced--Kickback Guide Barand Low--Kickback Chain specified foryour saw.

S Keep a good, firm grip on the saw with bothhands when the engine is running anddontlet go. A firm grip will help youreducekickback and maintain control of the saw.Keep the fingers of your left hand encir-cling and your left thumb under the fronthandlebar. Keep your right hand com-pletely around the rear handle whetheryour areright handed or left handed. Keepyour left arm straight with the elbowlocked.

S Position your left hand on the front handle-bar so it is in a straight line with your righthand on the rear handle when makingbucking cuts. Never reverse right and lefthand positions for any type of cutting.

S Stand withyour weightevenly balancedonboth feet.

S Stand slightly to the left side of the saw tokeep your body from being in a direct linewith the cutting chain.

S Do not overreach. You could be drawn orthrown off balance and lose control of thesaw.

S Do not cut aboveshoulder height. It is diffi-cult to maintain control of saw aboveshoulder height.

KICKBACK SAFETY FEATURES

WARNING: The following featuresare included on your saw to help reduce thehazard of kickback; however, such featureswill not totally eliminate this danger. As achain sawuser, do not rely only on safetyde-vices. You must follow all safety precau-

tions, instructions, and maintenance in thismanual to help avoid kickback and otherforces which can result in serious injury.S Reduced--Kickback Guide Bar, designed

with a small radius tip which reduces thesize of the kickback danger zone on thebar tip. A Reduced--Kickback Guide Barhas been demonstrated to significantly re-duce the number and seriousness of kick-backs when tested in accordance withsafety requirements for gasoline poweredchain saws as set by ANSI B175.1.

Kickback can becaused by allowing contact of the bar tip in thedanger zone with any hard object. Kickbackcan also be caused by pinching the saw chainalong the top of the guide bar. This actionmay

push theguide bar rapidly back toward the op-erator. Either of these events may cause youto lose control of the saw which could result inserious injury or even death. DO NOT RELY UPON ANY OF THE DEVICES BUILT INTO YOUR SAW. YOU SHOULD USE THE SAWPROPERLY AND CAREFULLY TO AVOIDKICKBACK. Reduced--kickback guide barsand low--kickback saw chains reduce thechance and magnitude of kickback and arerecommended. Your saw has a low kickbackchain and bar as original equipment. Repairson a chainbrake shouldbe madeby an autho-rized servicing dealer. Take your unit to the

place of purchase if purchased from a servic-ing dealer, or to the nearest authorized masterservice dealer.S Tip contact insome casesmay cause a light-

ning fast reverse REACTION, kicking guidebar up and back toward operator.

S Pinching the saw chain along the top of theguide bar may push the guide bar rapidlyback toward the operator.

WARNING: Computed kickbackangle (CKA) listed onyour saw and listed intheCKA table below represents angle of kickback

your bar and chain combinations will havewhen tested in accordance with CSA (Cana-dian Standards Association) and ANSI stan-dards. When purchasing replacement bar andchain, considerations should be given to thelower CKA values. Lower CKA values repre-sent safer angles to the user, higher values in-dicate more angle and higher kick energies.Computed angles represented indicate totalenergy andangle associated withoutactivationof the chain brake during kickback. 6. Place chain over and behind the clutchretainer, fitting the drive links in theclutch drum sprocket.

7. Fit bottom of drive links between theteeth in the sprocket in the nose of theguide bar.

8. Fit chain drive links into bar groove.9. Pullguidebarforward until chain is snug

in guide bar groove. Ensure all drivelinks are in the bar groove.

10. Hold guide bar against the saw frameand install clutch cover.

11. Install bar nuts and finger tighten only.Once the chain is tensioned, you will

need to tighten bar nuts.CHAIN TENSION(Including units with chain already installed)

Adjusting the tension:Chain tension is very important. Chainsstretch during use. This is especially trueduring the first few times you use your saw. Always check chain tension each time youuse and refuel your saw.

An adjusting screw (located on the guidebar) is used to adjustthe tension of thechain(see illustration).1. Turn adjusting screw clockwiseuntil chain

solidly contacts bottom of guide bar rail.

2. Using bar tool, roll chain around guide barto ensure all links are in bar groove.

3. Lift up tip of guide bar to check for sag.Release tip of guide bar, then turn adjusting screw clockwise until sag doesnot exist.

4. While lifting tip of guide bar, tighten barnuts securely with the bar tool.

5. Use the screwdriver end of the bar toolto move chain around guide bar.

6. If chain does not rotate, it is too tight.Slightly loosen bar nuts and loosenchain by turning the adjusting screw.Retighten bar nuts.

7. If chain is too loose, it will sag below theguide bar. DO NOT operate the saw if the chain is loose.

WARNING: If the saw is operatedwith a loose chain, the chain could jump off the guide bar and result in serious injury.

ON/STOP SWITCHThe ON/STOP SWITCH is used to stop theengine.THROTTLE TRIGGERThe THROTTLE TRIGGER controls enginespeed.THROTTLE LOCK--OUTThe THROTTLE LOCK--OUT must bepressed before you can squeeze the throttletrigger. This feature prevents you from acci-dentally squeezing the trigger.CHOKE/FAST IDLE LEVERThe choke and fast idle are set by pulling theCHOKE/FAST IDLE LEVER out to the full ex-tent for cold starting or after refueling. Thechoke provides additional fuel to the engineduring cold starting.PRIMER BULBThe PRIMER BULB circulates fuel to the car-buretor to provide quicker starting.

CHAIN BRAKEThe chain brake is a device designed to stopthe chain if kickback occurs. The chain brakeactivates automatically in the event of kick-back. Thechainbrakeactivatesmanually if thefront hand guard is pushed forward. The chainbrake is disengaged by pulling the front handguard back toward the front handle as far aspossible.CHAIN TENSIONIt isnormalfor a new chain tostretchduring thefirst 15 minutes of operation. You shouldcheckyour chain tension frequently. See CHAINTENSION under the ASSEMBLY section.

WARNING: Muffler is very hot dur-ingand after use. Do not touch the mufflerorallow combustible material such as drygrass or fuel to do so.

BEFORE STARTING ENGINE

WARNING: Besure toreadthefuelhandling information in the safety rules sec-tion of this manual before youbegin.If youdonot understand the fuel handling informationdo not attempt to fuel your unit. Seek helpfrom someone that does understand the in-formation or call the customer assistancehelp line at 1-800-554-6723.FUELING ENGINE

WARNING: Removefuel capslow-ly when refueling.

HELPFUL TIPTo obtain thecorrect oilmix ratio, pour 3.2 ounces of 2--cycle synthetic oil intoone gallon of fresh gas.

This engine is certified to operate on un-leaded gasoline. Before operation, gasolinemust be mixed with a good quality synthetic2-cycle air-cooled engine oil designed to bemixed at a ratio of 40:1. Poulan/Weed Eaterbrand synthetic oil is recommended. A 40:1ratio is obtained by mixing 3.2ounces (95 ml)of oil with 1 gallon (4 liters) of unleaded gaso-line. Included with this saw is a 3.2 ounce (95ml)container of Poulan/Weed Eater brandsyn-

thetic oil. Pour the entire contents of this con-tainer into 1 gallon (4 liters) of gasoline toachieve the proper fuel mixture.DO NOT USE automotive or marine oil.Theseoils will cause engine damage. Whenmixing fuel follow the instructions printed onthe container. Always read and follow thesafety rules listed under HANDLE FUELWITH CAUTION.BAR AND CHAIN LUBRICATIONThe bar and chain require continuous lubri-cation. Lubrication is provided by the auto-matic oiler system when the oil tank is keptfilled. Lack of oil will quickly ruin the bar andchain. Too little oil will cause overheatingshown by smoke comingfromthe chain and/ or discoloration of the bar.

In freezing weather oil will thicken, making itnecessary to thin bar and chain oil with asmall amount (5 to 10%) of #1 Diesel Fuel orkerosene. Bar and chain oil must be freeflowing for the oil system to pump enough oilfor adequate lubrication.Genuine Poulan or Poulan PRO R bar andchain oilis recommended toprotect your unitagainst excessive wear from heat and fric-tion. Poulan or Poulan PRO R oil resistshigh temperature thinning.If Poulanor PoulanPRO R bar and chain oilis not available, usea good gradeSAE 30oil.S Never usewaste oil forbar and chainlubri-

cation.S Always stop the engine before removing

the oil cap.

IMPORTANTExperience indicates that alcohol--blendedfuels (called gasohol or using ethanol or meth-anol) can attract moisture which leads to sepa-

ration and formation of acids during storage. Acidic gas can damage the fuel system of anenginewhile in storage. To avoid engine prob-lems, the fuel system shouldbe emptiedbeforestorage for 30 days or longer. Drain the gastank, start the engine and let it run until the fuellines and carburetor are empty. Use fresh fuelnext season. SeeSTORAGE section for addi-tional information.CHAIN BRAKEEnsure chain brake is disengaged by pullingthefront hand guardback towardthe fronthan-dle as far as possible.The chain brake mustbedisengaged before cutting with the saw.

WARNING: The chain must notmove when the engine runs at idle speed. If the chain moves at idle speed refer to CAR-BURETOR ADJUSTMENT within thismanual. Avoid contact with the muffler. A hotmuffler can cause serious burns.To stop the engine move the ON/STOPswitch to the STOP position.To start the engine hold the saw firmly onthe ground as illustrated. Make sure thechain is free to turn without contacting anyobject.

The brake is designed to stop the chain if kickback occurs.

S The inertia--activated chain brake isactivated if the front hand guard is pushedforward, either manually (by hand) orautomatically (by sudden movement).

S If the brake is already activated, it isdisengaged by pulling the front hand guardback toward the front handle as far aspossible.

S When cutting with thesaw, thechain brake

OPERATING TIPSS Check chain tension before first use and

after 1 minute of operation. See CHAINTENSION in the ASSEMBLY section.

S Cut wood only. Do not cut metal, plastics,masonry, non-wood building materials, etc.

S Stop the saw if the chain strikes a foreignobject. Inspect the saw and repair or re-place parts as necessary.

S Keep the chain out of dirt and sand. Even asmall amount of dirt will quickly dull a chainand thus increase the possibility of kickback.

S Practice cutting a few small logs using thefollowing techniques to get thefeel of us-ing your saw before you begin a majorsawing operation.S Squeeze the throttle trigger and allow the

engine to reach full speed before cutting.S Begin cutting with the saw frame

against the log.S Keep the engine at full speed theentire

time you are cutting.S Allowthe chainto cutfor you. Exert only

light downward pressure. If you forcethecut, damage to thebar, chain,or en-gine can result.

S Release the throttle trigger as soon asthe cut is completed, allowing the en-gine to idle. If you run the saw at fullthrottle without a cutting load, unneces-sary wear can occur to the chain, bar,

and engine. It is recommended thatthe engine not be operated for lon-ger than 30 seconds at full throttle.

S To avoidlosing control when cutis com-plete,do not put pressure onsaw atendof cut.

S Stop the engine before setting the sawdown after cutting.

TREE FELLING TECHNIQUES

WARNING: Check for broken ordead branches which can fall while cuttingcausing serious injury. Do notcut near build-ings or electricalwires if you do not know thedirectionof tree fall, norcut atnight since youwill not be ale to see well, nor during badweather suchas rain, snow, or strong winds,

etc. If the tree makes contact with any utilityline, the utility company should be notifiedimmediately.S Carefully planyour sawing operation inad-

vance.S Clearthe work area. Youneeda cleararea

all aroundthetree so you can have securefooting.

S The chain saw operator should keep onthe uphill side of the terrain as the tree islikelyto roll or slide downhillafter it is felled.

S Study the natural conditions that can causethe tree to fall in a particular direction.

Natural conditions that can cause a tree tofall in a particular direction include:S The wind direction and speed.S The lean of the tree. The lean of a tree

might not be apparent due to uneven orsloping terrain. Use a plumb or level to de-termine the direction of tree lean.

S Weight and branches on one side.S Surrounding trees and obstacles.

Look for decay and rot. If the trunk is rotted,it can snap and fall toward the operator.Check for broken or dead branches whichcan fall on you while cutting.Make sure there is enough room for the tree tofall. Maintain a distance of 2-1/2 tree lengthsfrom the nearest person or other objects. En-gine noise can drown out a warning call.Remove dirt, stones, loose bark, nails, sta-ples, and wire from thetreewherecuts aretobe made.Plana clear retreat pathto the rear and diag-onal to the line of fall.

FELLING LARGE TREES(6 inches (15 cm) in diameter or larger)The notch method is used to fell large trees. A notchis cut onthesideofthe treein the de-sired direction of fall. After a felling cut ismade on the opposite side of tree, the tree

will tend to fall into the notch.NOTE: If the tree has large buttress roots,removethembefore making thenotch. If us-ing saw to remove buttress roots, keep sawchainfromcontacting ground to prevent dull-ing of the chain.

NOTCH CUT AND FELLING THETREES Make notch cut by cutting the top of the

notch first. Cut through 1/3 of the diameterofthe tree. Next complete thenotch bycut-ting the bottom of the notch. See illustra-tion. Once the notch is cut remove thenotch of wood from the tree.

CUTTING A FALLEN TREE(BUCKING)Bucking is the term used for cutting a fallentree to the desired log size.

WARNING: Donot standon the logbeing cut. Any portion can roll causing lossof footing and control. Do not stand downhillof the log being cut.IMPORTANT POINTSS Cut only one log at a time.S Cut shattered wood very carefully; sharp

pieces of wood could be flung toward opera-tor.

S Use a sawhorse to cut small logs. Never

allow another person to hold the log whilecutting andnever hold the logwith your legor foot.

S Do not cut in an area where logs, limbs,and roots are tangled such as in a blowndown area. Drag the logs into a clear areabefore cutting by pulling out exposed andcleared logs first.

TYPES OF CUTTING USED FORBUCKING

WARNING: If saw becomespinched or hung in a log, dont try to force itout. You canlose control ofthe sawresultingin injury and/or damage to the saw. Stop thesaw, drive a wedgeof plastic orwood into thecut until the saw canbe removed easily. Re-startthe saw andcarefully reenterthe cut. Toavoid kickback and chain damage, do notusea metalwedge. Do not attempt to restartyour saw when it is pinchedor hung in a log.

LIMBING AND PRUNING

WARNING: Be alert for and guardagainst kickback. Do not allow the movingchain to contact any other branches or objectsat the nose of the guide bar when limbing orpruning. Allowing such contact can result inserious injury.

WARNING: Never climbintoa treetolimb or prune. Do not stand on ladders, plat-forms, a log,or inany position whichcan causeyou to lose your balance or control of the saw.IMPORTANT POINTSS Work slowly, keeping both hands firmly

gripped on the saw. Maintain secure footingand balance.

S Watch out for springpoles. Springpoles aresmall size limbs which can catch the sawchain and whiptoward you or pullyou off bal-ance. Use extreme caution when cuttingsmall size limbs or slender material.

S Be alert for springback. Watch out forbranches that are bent or under pressure. Avoid being struck by the branch or thesaw when the tension in the wood fibers isreleased.

S Keep a clear work area. Frequently clearbranches out of the way to avoid trippingover them.

LIMBINGS Alwayslimba tree after itis cutdown. Only

then can limbing be done safely and prop-erly.

S Leave the larger limbs underneath the felledtree to support the tree as you work.

S Start at the base of the felled tree and worktoward the top, cutting branches and limbs.Remove small limbs with one cut.

S Keep the tree between you and the chain.Cut from the side of the tree opposite thebranch you are cutting.

S Remove larger, supporting branches withthe cutting techniques described in BUCK-ING WITHOUT A SUPPORT.

S Always use an overcut to cutsmall and free-ly hanging limbs. Undercutting could causelimbs to fall and pinch the saw.

PRUNINGWARNING: Limit pruning to limbs

shoulder height or below. Do not cut if branches are higher than your shoulder. Get aprofessional to do the job.S Make your firstcut 1/3 of theway through the

bottom of the limb.S Next make a 2nd cut all the way through

thelimb. Then cuta thirdovercut leaving a1 to2 inch(2.5 to5 cm) collar fromthetruckof the tree.

CLEANING THE SPARK ARREST-ING SCREENCleaning is required every 25 hours of op-eration or annually, whichever comes first.

screen carefully to prevent damage.4. Clean the spark arresting screen gently

REPLACE SPARK PLUGThe spark plug should be replaced eachyear to ensure the engine starts easier andruns better. Ignition timing is fixed and non-adjustable.1. Loosen 3 screws on cylinder cover.2. Remove the cylinder cover.3. Pull off the spark plug boot.4. Remove spark plug from cylinder and

discard.5. Replace with Champion RCJ--7Y spark

plug and tighten securely with a 3 / 4 inch(19 mm) socket wrench. Spark plug gapshould be 0.025 inch (0,6 mm).

6. Reinstall the spark plug boot.7. Reinstall the cylinder cover and 3screws. Tighten securely.

Run engine at least 5 minutesafter adding stabilizer.Poulan/Weed Eater 40:1, 2-cycle engine oil(air cooled) is blended with fuel stabilizer. If youdo not use thisoil, you can adda fuelsta-

HELPFUL TIPDuring storage of your gas/ oilmixture, the oil will sepa- rate from the gas.We recommend that you shake the gas can weekly to insureproper blendingof the gas and oil.

ENGINES Remove spark plug and pour 1 teaspoon

of 40:1, 2-cycle engine oil (air cooled)through the spark plug opening. Slowlypull the starter rope 8 to 10 times to distrib-ute oil.

S Replace spark plug with new one of rec-ommended type and heat range.

S Clean air filter.S Check entire unit for loose screws, nuts,

and bolts. Replace any damaged, broken,or worn parts.

S At the beginning of the next season, useonly fresh fuel having the proper gasolineto oil ratio.

OTHERS Do not store gasoline from one season to

another.S Replace your gasoline can if it starts to

rust.
