APPLICATION TESTING CENTRE
The design of a grinding and classification system is
normally based on results from a programme of trials
conducted in the HOSOKAWA ALPINE Test Centre.
The trials can be complex and time consuming and
can include evaluation of a wide range of machine
options. This way, customers can be assured that all
process options have been considered and that the
system offered represents the optimum solution.
Our test centre is extensively equipped with a wide
range of different grinding and classification systems,
available both on a laboratory and production scale.
The test facility is supported by a modern testing
laboratory that includes a wide range of analytical
equipment enabling accurate measurement of
particle size, particle shape, density, etc. Skilled
and vastly experienced Alpine Engineers conduct
the trials, recording all operating data that enables
ongoing discussions with the customer during the
trial. Upon completion of the trial a comprehensive
test report is prepared which can then be used for
system design and as the basis for a performance
guarantee. It is essential that test facilities are kept at
the leading edge of technology if optimum baseline
data is to be provided for system design. Our range of
machines and systems is continuously upgraded and is
extended by new developments.

ALPINE AGITATED BALL MILL AHM
AGITATED BALL MILL AHM
The AHM is available in sizes suitable for
the laboratory, the testing centre or for
large-scale production.
This agitated ball mill was specially
developed for suspensions with good flow
properties where a steep particle size
distribution and high end-product fineness
are demanded. The mill is suitable for both
continuous operation and for batch mode
in the case of closed-circuit grinding.
PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION
The product is fed to the mill inlet by
means of a suitable pump and exits the mill
through a screen at the machine outlet.
The grinding chamber is filled to a level
of approximately 70-80% with grinding
pearls and the purpose of the screen at the
outlet is to retain the pearls whilst allowing
the milled slurry to exit the mill. Rotating
stirrers prevent blockage of the screen.
OPERATION
The mills are equipped with stationary or
mobile support units that guarantee simple
dismantling for cleaning and maintenance.
There is sufficient space underneath the
grinding chamber to permit the use of
large-volume collection bins for emptying
and cleaning the mill.
An agitated ball mill with a horizontal and cylindrical grinding chamber that is universal in use for the continuous wet grinding of particles down to the submicron range.

The slotted screen separating element is
low-wear in design and is installed in the
mill axis. It comprises a screen holder and a
slotted pipe screen which can be exchanged
easily and quickly without having to empty
the mill. Rotating stirrers in the separating
zone relieve the screen dynamically and
prevent blockages.
A robust, double-action mechanical seal
with sealing-liquid unit guarantees a high
level of operating reliability.
WEAR PROTECTION
The AHM has a cylindrical, double-walled
mill housing that can be cooled. The inside
of the grinding chamber is lined using
sleeve sections in either hardened stainless
steel or polyurethane. This modular concept
enables rapid exchange of the lining and
offers such advantages as inexpensive spares
and flexible application possibilities.
The material of construction for the
agitator discs, separating rings and stirrers
is selected to suit the individual application.
Because of this, a long service life can be
achieved even if abrasive suspensions are
processed. Again, the individual components
have been designed with flexibility and cost
optimisation in mind.
When extremely high demands are placed on
the products with regard to contamination,
the rotor and stator parts can be coated
with either high-grade ceramics or tungsten
carbide.

ALPINE POWERPAINT DPP
ANNULAR BALL MILL
POWERPAINT DPP
When it comes to the dispersion efficiency,
ease of cleaning and cooling efficiency, the
Alpine PowerPaint DPP has been designed to
fulfil the highest demands. It is suitable for
processing solvents as well as suspensions of
high viscosity. In addition to applications
in the paint industry, the excellent cooling
capability and ease of cleaning make the
DPP mill well suited to pharmaceutical and
foodstuffs applications.
PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION
The product is introduced centrally into
the mill by means of a pump and exits the
mill via a rotating slotted screen through
the hollow shaft in the upper section of
the mill.
The geometry of the mill is annular in
design and the toroid-shaped gap is filled
with grinding pearls. Return channels
within the mill are located such that a
uniform distribution of the grinding pearls
within the grinding gap is achieved at any
operating speed, thus ensuring that the
separating zone is kept
free from blockages.
OPERATION
The PowerPaint DPP is characterised by
its ease of operation. Main features are
the simplicity and speed of emptying the
grinding pearls, as well as the ease with
which the mill can be dismantled under
application of the integrated lifting and
swivel unit. The slotted screen can be
exchanged without the necessity to remove
the rotor. The fact that the mill can be
cleaned with a very small amount of a
suitable fluid makes for fast enables rapid
changeover of products
This ball mill was specially developed for use in the paint and varnish industry to grind and disperse high-grade water-based and solvent-based paint systems and pigment dispersions.

WEAR PROTECTION
As a result of the toroid-shaped annular
geometry, deflection zones with narrow
radii where grinding pearls could possibly
block up and cause high local wear are
avoided. The optimum motion of the
grinding pearls results in a long service
life of the machine components, i.e. of the
wear-protection elements. A robust, double-
action mechanical seal with sealing-liquid
unit guarantees a high level of operating
reliability.
Sintered carbide materials ensure excellent
wear protection and a long service life. The
easily accessible grinding chamber walls and
rotor surfaces can also be flame-sprayed
with tungsten carbide.
The wear-protection materials are
characterised by their excellent thermal
conductivity; a prerequisite for intensive
cooling of the grinding chamber.

Generously dimensioned cooling zones
both at the stator and the rotor permit the
gentle processing of temperature-sensitive
products such as water-based varnishes and
lacquers. Over and above this, all product-
contact materials are also suitable for
operation with solvents.
The compact design of the PowerPaint DPP
permits an extremely flexible set-up as well
as easy integration into existing systems.

ALPINE AGITATED BALL MILL DISCOPLEX ADP
AGITATED BALL MILL
DISCOPLEX ADP
The closed-circuit grinding of superfine
products is the main application for this
mill.
PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION
The Discoplex is a highly flexible agitated
ball mill in terms of it’s ease of operation
and the wide range of materials of
construction available for the wear
protection of the grinding chamber and
rotor. The construction materials of the
stirrers and grinding chamber lining can be
freely selected in different combinations.
Just as with the PowerPaint, the product is
pumped centrally into the mill housing and
exits the mill via a screen and a hollow shaft
in the upper section of the mill.
The rotor is disc-shaped in design and has
agitators that ensure uniform motion of the
grinding pearls.
WEAR PROTECTION
The two levels upon which the separating
element and the grinding pearls are located
as well as the internal circulation of the
grinding media prevent the grinding pearls
from compacting against the discharge
screen. The screen can can be installed
in any of the different mill designs to be
rotating or stationary.
The grinding chamber lining can be of
tungsten carbide or elastomers. Thanks
to their simple form, the stirrers can be
made rom a wide range of materials and
combined freely with the material used for
lining the grinding chamber and rotor.
The Alpine Discoplex is a ball mill that was specially developed for autogenous grinding, for highly viscous products and for dispersion tasks.

AGITATED BALL MILL ANR
The open construction of the ANR permits a
robust and simple design that allows large
machine sizes to be built. There are neither
separating elements nor shaft seals, the
result being optimum operating reliability.
The open design permits the grinding pearls
to be topped up easily during continuous
operation.
PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION
The product is charged to the lower section
of the mill by means of a suitable pump
and exits the mill via an overflow in the
upper section of the mill. Special production
parameters ensure that the force of gravity
retains the grinding pearls in the mill. The
grinding pearls are set into motion by
a ceramic-coated agitator. The standard-
design stator is also lined with ceramic to
ensure a long service life and to prevent
product discolouration.
The large-volume design coupled with
operation at low speeds permits the
production of superfine products at low
power consumption.
All ANR models can alternatively be supplied
with a hydraulic motor. This facilitates mill
start-up, permits the speed to be adjusted
and makes it possible to use much lower
installed motor power values.
The agitated ball mill ANR is an attrition mill in conventional open design. The mill is ideal for grinding mineral powder suspensions of medium viscosity at high outputs. It is used for single-pass grinding in continuous operation.

ALPINE WET CLASSIFIER HYDROPLEX AHP
WET CLASSIFIER AHP
This wet classifier is especially suitable
for high-tech products as well as for the
separation of relatively small product
batches of standard products or products
with sensitive surfaces. Typical applications
are ceramics, pigments or abrasives.
The wet classifier is equally suitable for
operation as a stand-alone classifier for pure
separation tasks of for operation in circuit
with a wet mill. Its flexibility is its forte.
PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION
The product is pumped into the bottom
section of the classifier and is separated
into a fine fraction and a coarse fraction
by means of a deflector wheel. The fines
pass radially through the classifying wheel
and exit the classifier via the hollow shaft.
The coarse material is discharged from the
classifier housing by means of a suitable
coarse material pump.
OPERATION
The classifier can be opened and dismantled
easily by means of the integrated hydraulic
lifting unit. Thanks to the modular design,
the wear parts are simple and inexpensive
to exchange.
Long years of experience with classifiers led to development of the Alpine Hydroplex AHP wet classifier.

WEAR PROTECTION
The AHP wet classifier can be lined with
a number of different wear-protection
materials. The wheel can be in ceramic
design and the housing can be lined with
polyurethane, tungsten carbide or ceramic.
The classifier is also suitable for processing
solvents.
The working range constitutes particle sizes
under 200 µm. Cut points of between
approx. 2 and 5 µm are possible. The cut
point is essentially influenced by the specific
weight of the solid. The higher the density,
the finer the cut point. Separations are
possible with solids concentrations of up
to 30% weight. If dispersion agents are
used, even higher concentrations can be
processed.
By varying the speed and throughput rate,
the AHP can be employed over a wide
particle size range. The end products can
thus be optimally adapted to changing
market demands.
Because of its simple geometry, the AHP is
quick and easy to clean and can thus also be
employed for different product lines on an
alternating basis.

LABORATORY MILL 90 AHM
LABORATORY MILL 90 AHM
This mill is ideal for small product batches
and for development tests, including those
in the field of nanotechnology. Extremely
small grinding pearls (<0.4 mm) can be used
in this mill and tests on the stabilisation of
suspensions in the submicron range can be
performed.
PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION
In contrast to the other AHM models, the
laboratory version has a variable-speed
direct drive and a generously dimensioned
flat screen deck. To permit filling and
emptying, the mill is suspended in pivots on
a frame. The upright position also allows a
cleaning of the screen without emptying
the mill.
WEAR PROTECTION
The wear parts of the basic machine are
exchangeable and can be made of stainless
steel, ceramic, tungsten carbide, polyurethane
or other plastics.
OPERATION
The high degree of flexibility results from
the possibility of equipping the mill with
grinding bins and agitator shafts in different
lengths. This makes it possible to adapt the
mill to different grinding bin volumes and
to process batches of 250 ml, 500 ml and
1100 ml.
Clamp rings guarantee ease of cleaning and
dismantling. A high degree of operating
reliability is achieved with the double-action
mechanical seal.
The 90 AHM is the laboratory mill in the AHM series and is designed as a table-top mill with separate control cabinet.

GRINDING PEARLS, TECHNOLOGY ANDCONSTRUCTION MATERIALS
WEAR-PROTECTION MATERIALS
We use a variety of different materials to
line our mills if highly abrasive products are
being ground. To guarantee a long service
life, we employ high-grade polyurethane,
selected steels or ceramic materials, as well
as coatings with tungsten carbide or other
materials that have a favourable influence
on the grinding process.
GRINDING PEARL SEPARATION
The fact that the grinding pearls do
not compact together is an important
advantage with all our mills. With the AHM
mill, rotating pins ensure that the batch of
grinding media remains loose and separate
around the screen, whereas with the ADP
and the DPP, it is the special mill geometry
and the subsequent circulation of grinding
pearls that ensures smooth and trouble-free
operation. The rotating screen in these mills
also brings an additional optimisation in
the case of highly viscous products.
GRINDING MEDIA
We work with a selected number of reputable
grinding media manufacturers who we
have no hesitation in recommending. The
quality of the grinding pearls is extremely
important for the entire grinding process
and a prerequisite for trouble-free mill
operation, because abraded media
particles can naturally adversely affect the
Besides the mill design, there are a number of other factors that make a major contribution to the success of a grinding process, namely the type of grinding media used, the wear-protection materials, the separation of the grinding pearls and naturally also the process as a whole.
end product. There are grinding pearls
(material, size, etc.) to suit every grinding
process, and we work in close cooperation
with our customers to ensure selection of
the ideal media for their application

SYSTEM EXAMPLE: ENGINEERING CERAMICS
WET GRINDING OF HARD MATERIALS
Optimum wear protection and suitable
grinding pearls ensure that these mills have
a long service life.
The two illustrated AHM agitator ball mills
are generally operated independent of each
other in closed-circuit mode. The selected
configuration, however, is so flexible that
these mills can also be series-connected. This
brings advantages if different products are
being processed and also offers redundancy
with respect to the availability of the
grinding system.
The suspension is mixed in a bin before
being pumped by a hose pump through the
mill and back into the bin again. Over the
running time of the grinding operation, this
results in a specific number of theoretical
passes through the mill that influence the
grinding process.
We also offer different options as regards
the system control. Dependent on customer
requirements, a PLC unit with different
control circuits can be installed to monitor
the entire system. Our control systems can
be designed for incorporation into existing
systems, enabling monitoring of our process
at the central control station. Ask us about
the various options!
