Power Generation And Supply
Adapting the distribution network to the needs of tomorrow
• Western Power Distribution - an overview
• Network challenges presented by the transition to a low carbon
future
• Engagement with the planning system - strategic plans and
individual applications
• Challenges and opportunities that Western Power experience
• Lincolnshire Low Carbon Hub
Agenda
Power Generation And Supply
Western Power Distribution
•7.7 Million customers over a 55,500 sq kms service area
•Our network consists of 221,000 kms of overhead lines and
underground cables, and 185,000 substations
•LV to 132kV Network ownership
Power Generation And Supply
Network challenges presented by the transition to
a low carbon future
• WPD will need to be able to accommodate
significant volumes of:
– Local generation (e.g. solar PV, wind, CHP
& EfW)
– Low carbon demand (e.g. Electric Vehicles
(EVs) & heat pumps)
• Networks are not currently designed to
accommodated these loads on high
volumes/clusters
• Considerable uncertainty about uptake –
volume, location & network impact
