Science/Math Standard(s): What standard(s) will provide the focus for this unit? Life Core 9-12 L.1.1 Students are able to relate cellular functions

and processes to specialized structures with in the cells.Essential Questions: What essential questions will focus this

unit? How are geometric properties related to art, architecture, and

nature? What specific geometric relationships occur in art, architecture, and

nature?

Assessment(s): What evidence will show that students understand? Performance Tasks, Projects: Students will research their assigned area

and prepare a presentation to teach it to the rest of the class. They will post their research to a class wiki. This will allow students missing a presentation to catch up on missed lessons and provide an opportunity for all students to review the lessons. The students will prepare a worksheet for their lesson to help the class review the major ideas presented.

Quizzes, Tests, Academic Prompts: Students will prepare a quiz over their lesson. There will be a final test over the unit, primarily taken from these quiz questions. Students will also do a pre and post test using the Achievement Series.

Informal observations/discussions/interviews: Informal observations will be made during the research and presentation stages. Group discussion will be encouraged following each presentation.

Student Self-Assessment: Students will be asked to assess the effectiveness of their group work and final project as well as the overall effectiveness of the project.

to the learning process? Nano Legends is a game that is designed to help students understand

the functions of the organelles in a cell. In the game, the lung cells are being attacked by carcinogens and it is Arin’s job to prevent the damaged cell from dividing uncontrollably and becoming a cancerous tumor.

PowerPoint presentations will be used to provide students with information that will help them understand the Nano Legends game, cell structure and cellular functions. Students will also use PowerPoint to present information about the Osmosis Lab.

Blogs will be used to provide discussion about the Nano Legends game. These blogs should include information about the different cell organelles and their function. My blog can be found at http://nanolegendscells.blogspot.com

A digital word wall will be used to help students with the vocabulary associated with cell structure, cell functions, and cellular respiration. Vocabulary can be reviewed on www.quizlet.com

Concept Map on www.mindomo.com showing cell organelles and each organelle’s function. This also includes the process of cellular respiration.

FeedbackWhat has been the most beneficial part of this

project?I think that exposure to the wikis and the blogs

because I actually use those things now, just knowing how those tools on Web 2.0 work is very valuable

it ended up working with my low achieving students; I probably wouldn’t have forced my kids, or forced myself to allow them to use the computers as much as I did if it hadn’t been for the project

being able to see what other people were doing… and get some ideas from them; some of the student’s ideas that changed some of the ways I thought

the encouragement to get to the conferences and pick up so many new ideas and new background was wonderful. And then the extra push in that we had to do the units really was influential in putting these ideas into practice a lot more

even us old dogs can learn new tricks

What advice would you give others for integrating technology in their classrooms? Do it. Jump in.Talk to people. Talk to your kids. Get some ideas from

your kids. But the big thing is to do it. Ask your kids, your kids will know all kinds of [ideas].The kids know more than we do and they’ll help.Don’t feel like it has to be perfect the first time you do

it. Just try it, and if it doesn’t all go just right, keep working at it, it gets better, but you just have to try it.

When I used to use my markers, I’d do a hundred problems every day and just erase them…now I do everything in Journal and post it to my wiki…if they’re on a bus ride, they’ll download stuff before our bus leaves school so they can work on it on the way…those kids [who are gone] can have the same instruction, or similar to…

What suggestions do you have for future projects? keep the elluminate sessions, I could do it at home,

and I just went home and I stuck the earphones on and the kids were there, I could do it at school…

have an online session or a short 2 hour class at TIE or something where you can really work with teachers who want to know how those work, and really practice with them

for future projects maybe a one day here and a one day there, where you’ve got a little bit of time to let some things sink in and to work with some things

if you could at least get teams from the schools, which I think definitely helped
