ARDF was created to be the strong hands

of Christ, reaching out in solidarity with

our brothers and sisters around the

world. ARDF encourages families and

communities in need with practical

help and solid solutions through a living

Gospel that feeds body, soul, and spirit

so that all may live in dignity and seek

eternal life in Jesus Christ.

By God’s grace, ARDF has been working with the Global Anglican Communion for more than 15 years. Because of your support, we have provided more than $10.9 million in funding for 194 development projects in 38 countries touching nearly 1.4 million lives in Anglican communities around the world. In addition, since 2004, a total of $2.72 million has been donated to those suffering disasters worldwide, including in the United States.

In fiscal year 2019, ARDF-Global was able to expand in new directions. ARDF Kenya Charitable Trust joined the ARDF family, as did ARDF-Egypt. These new ARDF organizations are the beginnings of a movement building self-sufficiency at the national provincial level by investing in development projects that return a surplus which can be reinvested in future grants and loans. There are now five ARDF national groups serving the Worldwide Anglican Communion – Australia, Canada, and the United States (founding members), plus Kenya and Egypt.

For example, ARDF-Kenya Charitable Trust already has two surplus projects (a poultry farm and an agricultural milling operation) that will generate $60,000 over three years into the Charitable Trust. A joint 2020 project in bread baking will provide a market for farmers and will supply wholesale/retail loaves to the underserved market in three eastern dioceses in Kenya.

The ARDF-US model connects donors in North America with parishes in the developing world, empowering local leaders on the ground to meet the needs of their community. When both US and international churches demonstrate the love of Jesus in tangible and spiritual ways, the impact is life giving. We are thankful to God that you show your love for Christ by giving through ARDF-US.

ARDF-Global remains committed to living out the words of Matthew 25:40: “I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.” Your partnership has provided much for our brothers and sisters in Africa, Asia, the Middle East, and Latin America.

You have also allowed us to respond to vital relief needs around the world. Specifically, your generous response to Hurricanes Florence and Michael, the wildfires in California, and cyclones in Mozambique, among others, empowered the church to be a beacon of hope to thousands of people in crisis.

We are thankful for your partnership in proclaiming the gospel – in both word and deed – throughout the world.

In Christ,

OUR MISSIONOur mission is to work within the worldwide Anglican Communion to maximize life change in some of the most challenging parts of the world for the sake of Christ by

• Mutually crossing cultural and economic boundaries.• Focusing on Africa, Asia, and Latin America.• Supporting holistic, community-based projects that

incorporate evangelism.• Using the highest quality project research and

outcome evaluation available.• Providing a spiritually enriching, thoughtful, and

satisfying giving experience for our donors.

Inspired by God’s radical grace, we exist to empower Anglicans in the developing world to show the love of Christ to those in need in their own communities.

OUR OPPORTUNITYMost of the world lives on less than 2 dollars a day. Hun-dreds of millions live without clean water, food, education, healthcare, or employment. Countless numbers suffer under oppression, broken political systems, endemic violence, and despair. They are real people, just like us, who are in desperate need of transformation and hope.

As Anglicans and members of the Body of Christ, we are connected to a global network of spiritually rich congre-gations and grassroots ministries that are already serving the poor and proclaiming the Gospel in incredible ways.

OUR IMPACTARDF builds powerful partnerships with Anglicans in Africa, Asia, and Latin America to relieve extreme suffer-ing and transform lives through sustainable, high-impact development projects. Our unique, Christ-centered development model focuses on thorough research, local partners, and transparent financial accountability.

Whether a given project focuses on education, clean water, accessible healthcare, economic opportunity, food security, or agriculture, ARDF believes that local partner-ships are the best way to positively transform our world. Thank you for joining us in partnering with our Anglican brothers and sisters as they live out the Gospel in some of the world’s poorest communities.

OUR HISTORYARDF was founded in 2004 with the support of then Bishop Robert Duncan as a way to channel giving from Anglican donors in North America to Anglican churches in the economically poorer countries of the Anglican Communion.

From the start, ARDF consciously adopted an organiza-tional model intended to reverse Anglicanism’s colonial legacy and restore international relationships based on mutual respect and a shared faith in Jesus Christ. To achieve this end, a board of Archbishops representing orthodox Anglican Provinces in the developing world leads ARDF, determining priorities, approving each project, and keeping the organization firmly linked to the Church.

“For the first time in the history of giving within the Church, we see true partnership, not patronage,” com-mented The Most Rev. Henry Luke Orombi, former Archbishop of the Church of the Province of Uganda and a founding ARDF Trustee.

This model has forged strong ties between the ACNA and many Anglican leaders from around the world. These Gospel-centered partnerships make the local Anglicans who implement ARDF’s projects feel “connected to the Body of Christ – not just a charity,” in the words of Bp. Flavio Soares, Diocese of Recife, Brazil.

Today, ARDF serves as the ACNA’s official international relief and development arm. At the same time, ARDF has become a grassroots movement for Anglicans here in North America who maintain a historically grounded and orthodox faith while also caring deeply about poverty and social justice issues.

ARDF ministers to the whole person. We do this by funding projects that fall into one of these six categories: Community Development, Economic Empowerment, Education, Evangelism and Discipleship, Food Security, and Health. All ARDF projects are holistic and many fall into more than one category. Every project proclaims Christ through the development process.

Because education is integral to all of the categories, on the following pages, this year’s Annual Report features four education projects that reach different ages and stages of students around the world.

Burundi has been plagued by political unrest, virtually paralyzing an education system that was already failing before the confl ict began. Across the country, educational facilities are dilapidated and contribute to low student enrollment, attendance, and performance. Many teachers are not qualifi ed, and many students are displaced, which makes focusing on their education diffi cult. School buildings have been destroyed across the country. In places like the Diocese of Matana, poverty has prevented people from participating in their own development and seeking improved schools.

To provide a conducive learning space and improve school facili-ties, the Anglican Diocese of Matana in Burundi is in the process of expanding the facilities at Ecole Fondementale de Matana School. It is building six new classrooms for primary school students: two for kindergarten students, and two for post-primary students. The new classrooms will increase the school’s enrollment from the current 1,036 students to 1,586. Sixty students will enroll in kindergarten, 390 in primary school, and 100 in post-primary education.

In addition, community members will use the new space for community meetings, evangelism, and Bible study – all practices that promote peace and reconciliation.

IN THEIR OWN WORDS:“Before the school was built, the situation was very catastrophic and chaotic in terms of performance and attendance. One classroom was shared by two groups, one in the morning and another in the afternoon. Newly constructed classrooms came as a solution to that issue, though we still have some challenges. For example, in class one, we may fi nd 75 to 80 pupils and the same case is being observed in post-primary [classrooms, which is] against the government policy of 30 to 40 pupils per class.”– Ferdinand Nishirimbere, headmaster, Matana Primary School

The Mara region is one of the poorest in Tanzania. Although educational opportunities have expanded for a large number of students, many of Tanzania’s poorest students, like in Mara, are still unable to attend school. Most women are married at an average age of 13 years and have children while they are still young and this deprives them of an education.

Additionally, in these remote and rural areas, there are few quality secondary schools. Those that exist are often poorly equipped with resources and lack qualifi ed personnel. The Anglican Diocese of Rorya is constructing the fi rst phase of Nyang’ombe Girls’ Secondary School, which will accommodate 150 students. The project includes constructing four classrooms, a library, laboratory, and computer lab. The new school will provide a quality and affordable education for girls in Nyang’ombe, Rorya.

In addition to the 150 girls now able to attend school, 350 community members will benefi t from the project as the new secondary school becomes a venue for community meetings and other activities.

The Diocese of Rorya has a strong track record in education, evangelism, relief efforts, and holistic development. During times of drought the diocese has provided food. The diocese is known for helping the community in a variety of ways and has the community’s support.

IN THEIR OWN WORDS:“My husband left me with fi ve kids when he died in 2009. I have been keeping them by myself with [a] little help from Bishop John of Anglican Rorya. My family experienced drought last year and we didn’t harvest anything from our two acres farm. We thank Diocese of Rorya for providing us with 50 kilograms of maize harvested from their Ryagoro farm. My family can now at least eat corn and have porridge.”– Mrs. Luanda Simbiri Ndira, Diocese of Rorya, Tanzania

Communities Become Self-Suffi cientDiocese of Central Zambia

Zambia is one of the poorest countries in the world, with a major-ity living on less than $2 a day. Farmers must learn better farming practices, including crop diversifi cation and cultivation of indige-nous livestock. Additionally, Zambia needs trained literacy teachers to improve the student-teacher ratios in rural areas. The Anglican Diocese of Central Zambia will address both of these needs in a creative project focused on the Mkushi/Fiwila area.

Specifi cally, the church is improving its facilities as a means of expanding opportunities for training both farmers and literacy teachers. This will allow the existing Teacher Training College to triple the intake of students, from 25 to 75.

While the student teachers are on vacation, the church will use the improved facilities to train farmers. Twenty-fi ve farmers are participating in a residential program where they are learning new farming methods. After a month of instruction, they will return to their villages under the guidance of government extension workers. At the next school holiday, another 25 farmers are trained, allowing for 75 farmers to be assisted annually.

A 74-acre demonstration farm is also in development. This will be a place to both train farmers and to plant marketable crops to bring in money for the diocese, ensuring sustainable training programs.

IN THEIR OWN WORDS:“I received seeds and fertilizer from Anglican Diocese of Central Zambia that enabled me to plant [corn]. Because of the support, I harvested a lot more corn than before, invested in [a] simple dryer, thus enabling me to store and sell some to earn income. This support greatly helped me and my family to produce enough food for the family. I now sell the surplus food and [am] able to pay school fees and supplies for my children.”– Mrs. Katalika, Chikupili village, Central Zambia

THE COMPLETED RECEPTION AREA OF THE EXPANDED SCHOOL WILL BE A WELCOMING PLACE FOR BOTH FARMERS AND STUDENT TEACHERS.

Social outreach is at the heart of the Diocese of Accra. This is necessary because the youth of Ghana face diffi cult challenges as they grow into adulthood. In the poorest suburbs around greater Accra, youth must deal with political violence, armed robbery, rampant drug and alcohol use, and a scarcity of jobs. The govern-ment of Ghana cannot meet all of the needs for job creation and other social services. Without meaningful employment, young people turn to gangs, petty theft, and illegal drugs. Many girls drop out of school and some are swept up into prostitution. Hospitals report the rate of HIV/AIDS infections is rising among young people.

The Diocese of Accra has built a Youth Development Center, where vocational and spiritual training will provide young people aged 17-25 with opportunities and hope. To develop job skills, training will include technical and computer skills as well as adult education. The center will also offer recreational facilities, a community library, and a youth savings and credit cooperative.

Construction was completed in four phases, over an 11-month period. Now complete, the center will soon serve more than 300 young people in the community.

IN THEIR OWN WORDS:“The training I received helped me to start my own business. It is [a] program I will always urge every young man in the Anglican Diocese of Accra to participate in. I initially was reluctant and did not want to join the program, but when I did so, I have never regretted the decision to join. I learned and gained a lot. It is a program that brings together young people to learn and become better people in the community. I encourage young people to participate in this program because it is through this that we will create jobs and wealth for our people.”– David Obisama, entrepreneur and benefi ciary

Kenya Christian Education Partnership - KCEP - was founded in 2010 in order to address the need for quality education in the arid, impoverished region of Northern Kenya. Each year, an additional classroom was built until a full primary school (through grade 8) was complete. In 2017, the fi rst class of 8th graders sat for the National Exams needed to qualify for high school. The students exceeded all expectations by winning numerous awards with their high scores. It was clear that these young lives, used to hardship, would be strong, dedicated, students. But here was the proof.

Tumani Academy - and its affi liated preschools - now enroll over 550 students. Many continue to receive high marks in the county. But the school is known for more than its academic reputation. Parents and kids love Tumaini because of the wonderful environment. In imparting Christian values, Tumani is teaching unity not division. This is crucial - because in this harsh climate that is prone to tribal clashes, we need future leaders who understand how central peace and reconciliation is to God’s plan.

We know God will use these students to live out the Tumaini motto: Arise and Shine.

This is just the beginning. These young lives have received an excellent education! But in order for them to compete in the Kenyan economy, they must continue on to high school. KCEP has been supporting high school students through sponsorships and the “Educate for Hope” fund. But now - as a new project of ARDF - we have the chance to dream bigger. Local church leaders have a plan for a high school, one that will be nearby and operate on the same principles as Tumaini. They will build and operate a strong academic Christian high school that will prepare the students to contribute to society in meaningful ways.

With your help, KCEP will help to build this new high school and offer hope to many more students in Northern Kenya.

Last fi scal year, ARDF gave away nearly $250,000 to help victims of seven disasters. Of course, relief numbers never tell the entire story. Here are just a few stories of impact thanks to the money you donated for relief efforts.

CALIFORNIA WILDFIRESIn the fall of 2018, ARDF partnered with the Anglican Diocese of Christ for the Sake of Others (C4SO) to bring needed relief to victims of wildfi res. One of the benefi cia-ries was the Hope Center.

Many years ago, Larry and Stephanie Hayden started Hope Center. One day Larry decided to take an extra sandwich with him, with plans to give it to someone in need. That small action led to a food bank out of their home. The ministry soon grew to a warehouse and food kitchen. With ARDF funds, the Hope Center rented three more warehouses in order to expand their space so they could continue to receive and give away the supplies that were so desperately needed by the displaced people of Butte County.

HURRICANE FLORENCE UPDATE“It’s felt like years” - Sissy Owen, Conway, SC

After Hurricane Florence fl ooded Conway, SC, Sean Richardson, the youth minister at St. Paul’s Conway, SC, rode past Doug & Sissy Owen’s house. He saw them in the yard and they struck up a conversation. He asked if St. Paul’s could help them with their recovery efforts from Hurricane Florence. Volunteers were able to help the Owens fi nish the repairs to their home - thanks to donations from ARDF and others. Because of the love the St. Paul’s community showed them, Sissy and Doug have now joined St. Paul’s Church.

GENERAL RELIEFIn the fall of 2018, ARDF launched a General Relief Fund. We hope that in the future, this fund will be a way to quickly fund Anglican churches after a disaster strikes - before ARDF has announced a specifi c campaign. Last fall, Archbishop Foley Beach wrote a letter intro-ducing Anglican churches to ARDF and encouraging them to contribute to this fund. This fund will enable us to respond even more quickly to relief events in the future.

Sharing Stories of Partnership at ACNA’s AssemblyAt the 2019 Provincial Assembly in Plano, TX, ARDF offered a workshop on serving in times of disaster. Resources from this talk are at https://ardf.org/domestic-relief-resources.
