QUARTERLY REPORT 3 R D Q UA R T E R | 2 0 1 8

MAKIN’ MOVES IN THE THIRD QUARTERHammering it home: It wasn’t long ago, during the third quarter of 2017, that we received the first delivery of our 125,000-pound transformers, began installing metal siding for the “Switchwall” art project, and began construction of the elevated walkway. Just one year later, we’ve energized the transformers, installed all siding, and completed the elevated walkway. Other recent

accomplishments include final paving of Minor Avenue N, installation of architectural concrete along John Street, and begnning installation of new pedestrian signals on Denny Way at Minor Avenue N.

Looking ahead to the fourth quarter, we’ll be continuing work on the community spaces, prepping for landscaping and

tree planting, and getting ready for the materials delivery for the “Transforest” art piece (see more inside).

With completion projected for early 2019, the substation is well on its way to becoming a unique community feature for the public and providing efficient energy for the Denny Triangle and South Lake Union neighborhoods.

AROUND THE SUBSTATION:

OUT WITH THE OLD, IN WITH THE NEW…

The name of the network’s game this year has been duct bank installation and roadway restoration. Earlier this quarter, we needed to remove an existing duct bank before installing a new one. Below is a photo of what was discovered. Who knew underground conduits could be so artful?

Other network construction activities include planting new trees in Denny Triangle and new landscaping in the Cascade neighborhood.

New tiles and trees on the corner of 6th Avenue N and Lenora Street.

Duct bank removed prior to a new duct bank installation near the intersection of 9th Avenue N and Mercer Street.

INSIDE THE SUBSTATION: HANG OUT AT THE SUBSTATION

We’re continuing to make progress on the community rooms, open space area, and landscaping. When the substation is open to the public, there will be opportunities for people to gather and learn about how it works. Community features include two indoor meetings spaces, an off-leash area designated for the neighborhood’s furry friends, and educational portals that display infographics.

AWESOME ARTWe partnered with the Seattle Office of Arts & Culture to integrate both permanent and temporary art into the Denny Substation Project. This art program is administered by the Office of Arts & Culture 1% for Art Fund. Seattle artists Annie Han and Daniel Mihalyo of Lead Pencil Studio are members of the substation design team and the creators of “Transforest,” an art installation on the substation site that communicates the natural beauty of the Pacific Northwest and the history of power generation and transmission.

In July, the base for the “Transforest” art piece was installed on the southwest side of the substation site.

SOUTH LAKE UNION SNAPSHOT

LINEAR FEET OF DUCT BANK CONSTRUCTED:

2017: 4,349

2018: 11,300 an increase of nearly 7,000 feet

ROADWAY RESTORATION COMPLETED:

2017: 5%

2018: 40% up by 35%

ABOUT SILVA CELLSThe Silva Cell is an underground bioretention system that creates forest-like conditions to support tree growth and provide healthy storm water management through absorption. Silva Cells are designed specifically for urban spaces and are a perfect fit for the substation and its surrounding areas. Offering benefits such as waterflow and pollutant control and maintenance of water quality, Silva Cells are also low maintenance, work in any type of soil, and best of all, help grow big trees. Who doesn’t love more greenery?

A line of Silva Cells on the south side of the substation on Denny Way set to receive a row of trees later this year.

Silva Cells being laid down outside of the Brewster Apartment, just west of the substation site.

Open space area on the west side of the substation. Dogs and their people will soon be able to run free and enjoy this unique community amenity.
