!!  In a single day, the Earth receives from the Sun 30 times the energy mankind would consume in a year!

!  Most of this energy is received by developing countries, where more than 1.2 billion people are lacking electricity access!

Access to electricity per region in 2009 vs. World map of solar radiation !

Developing countries are the most blessed with renewable energy and the most un-electrified at the same time!

Power:On aims to take advantage of this formidable resource to bring electricity to isolated areas and fight poverty!

Current rural electrification solutions are under-optimal and/or unfit to serve the demand from off-grid populations!

Hybrid systems are the best way to achieve our goal to fight poverty while preserving the environment!

Power:On aims to electrify the destitute by putting forward an economical, ecological and upgradeable alternative!

Hybrid systems produce energy at a very competitive cost:!!  kWh cost divided by 3 Vs. Solar appliances!!  kWh cost cut down by 30% Vs. Diesel

generators!

Installed powers are sufficient to trigger economic development:!!  From several kW to hundreds of kW – Enough

to power production tools!!Greenhouse gases emissions are drastically reduced:!!  50 CO2 eq. tons are avoided each year for a

fossil fuels dependent 100 households village!

At last, minigrids are upgradeable:!!  They can be easily adapted to the evolutions of

the communities’ needs over time!

Our approach is built on lessons learned from past initiatives…!

Power:On’s approach!

!  Power:On puts forward a multi-dimensional approach where electricity is the engine of economic development!

!  The project is bound to the implication of local technical partners!

!  The retail price calculated by our software takes into account all the system’s costs, from investment to maintenance!

!  Power:On developed a simulation and optimization software in order to control its production costs!

!  The programs are co-created with the communities during several months of up-front work!

!  The implication of the communities and the set up of safeguards and clear rules will prevent bad behaviors!

!  Abuses and frauds by the beneficiaries, threatening the system’s sustainability!

!  Un-controlled production costs!

!  Retail price does not cover maintenance!

!  Maintenance and access to spare parts extremely difficult in isolated areas!

!  Lack of long term vision after the communities have been electrified!

!  Ill-conceived service, ill-suited to the communities’ real needs!

!  Two members of the community are hired by Power:On to manage the system on a daily basis!

!  Within rural communities, Power:On’s clients are the SMEs, the households and the public utilities!

!  Partner NGOs and MFIs, assisting Power:On in its mission to fight poverty, gain access to electricity as well!

Power:On’s technology guarantees positive financial returns for all of our projects!

The cost of electricity is the central parameter in every rural electrification project:!!!  It has to be as low as possible – so as to

guarantee universal access!!!  It has to be fair – so the company can cover the

costs of the system, from initial investment to operations and maintenance!

!In order to fulfill this double objective, Power:On has developed a simulation and optimization software for hybrid systems.!

Our software allows us to set an optimal retail price for both Power:On and the rural communities!

Example of analysis!Behavior of the system on a given day!

We ambition to launch a pilot project in Benin in 2014!

Familiarity with the area! !Clear and identified need! !

High solar potential! !High diesel price! !Political stability! !

Minigrid friendly framework! !

The targeted region meets several important criteria for the implementation of the pilot project:!

Our first project will be designed to serve a hundred households community for 25 years.!!!This pilot requires a "150,000 budget and will generate a positive return from the start.!!This project will require several months of up-front work on the field. To this extent, we are currently identifying:!!!  Operational partners (development NGOs and

microfinance institutions)!!  Technical partners to install and maintain the

generation system!!  Financial partners (including foundations

dedicated to universal energy access)!!  Official contacts in Benin (Government

authorities, rural electrification agency)!!
