Antioch Community High SchoolPowerPoint Overview –

Expectations – and Reminders

How to WOW your teachers and classmates with a KNOCK OUT

PowerPoint!

*

There are 300 millionPowerPoint users

in the world*

* estimate

They do 30 million presentations

each day*

* estimate

About a million presentations are going

on right now

50 % of them are unbearable*

* conservative estimate

Right now, LOTS of people are killing each other with

bad presentations!

They are all DEAD! Well, almost.

A Vicious Cycle is Created

Poor Planning Poor Presentation

Poor Communication

Poor Grade Unhappy Student/Parent

Let’s make the world a better place

Why are students killing their peers and teachers with such

bad presentations?

Research shows:Bullets don’t kill peoplePeople kill peopleUnintentionallyYet regularly (with poor presentations!)

Mainly due to a lack of…•Significance – Important and new information•Organization – Poorly organized or missing parts •Simplicity- Slides with too much type – or information •Rehearsal- Student did not practice his/her presentation

So…. How can you develop a winning PowerPoint

presentation?

1. Significance

Why do you present?•To pass information?•Your teacher told you to?•To make meaning?

What’s the subject and why does it matter to you?

How presentations work(Significance) New and interesting information creates passionPassion attracts attentionAttention leads to actionAction leads to a great grade!

Are you passionate?

Check yourself

This is Passion

This is Passion

This is NOT Passion

Can’t find the meaning? If you do not have something new or interesting to share, you won’t be passionate -

Don’t present

2. OrganizationIn your PowerPoint

What organization to use?Any – as long as it is

ConvincingMemorable

How to Organize Your Presentation

First….Ask yourself – Who is your audience? What do they

already know?

Try to Tell a Story

• Research shows that people learn better and take in information more effectively when it is told in a “narrative” or story form.

If you are talking about a solution to a problem Use

Beginning – Middle – End organization

Beginning: Introduce the problemMiddle: Explain why the problem needs to besolvedEnd: Propose and explain your solution

Give 3-4 reasons to support your point – the audience will not

remember more anyway

OR

Be Sure to Have a Memorable Opening

A video clip is great…..

But be sure it enhances your presentation – it’s not JUST cute!

STOP! You’re Killing Me With PowerPoint!

Try to Involve the Audience….

• Ask a Question• Tell a brief story• Take a poll• Give a brief overview of your topic

It takes hard work to plan and organize

But…..It makes ALL the difference!

3. Simplicity

“Everything should be made as simple as possible but not

simpler.”

Apparently, being simple is not THAT simple.

I’ll give you some examples of POOR PowerPoint Slides

Don’t worry: knowing the language doesn’t really help.

Don’t do this!

Don’t use too much text

Use a large font (48) so everyone

can see!

Notice cool background?* Don’t do this!

Don’t put too much information on one slide

Keep it brief – but memorable!

Hey we’ve got DATA! *Don’t do this!

This one’s my favorite.

Fundamental Problem?Too much information –

KISSKeep It Simple Stupid!

What’s the point?One simple point?

Remove everything else.

Sometimes more slides are better.

Ditch stupid “rules”Do you remember the rule: 7 lines per slide or fewer 7 words per line or fewerWell, it is just plain stupidIf you follow this “rule”You get a slide like this

Ditch stupid “rules”Do you remember the rule: 7 lines per slide or fewer 7 words per line or fewerWell, it is just plain stupid

BORING!Slides like this are boring!

Simple design rules*

One point per slideFew matching colorsVery few fontsPrefer photos not clipart

*pun intended

Less textMore imageryWILD imagery

Inform with little text *

•Yes you can –*We want to be listening to you NOT reading your PowerPoint

4. Rehearsal

Practice the way you want to be seen- and what you want to be

graded on

People read faster than you speak; this means if you are reading your

slides – they are not listening!

Never. Never, Never, Never …..

Never just read your PowerPoint slides!

PRACTICE!

Your presentation will never work perfectly the

first time. Trust me.

Feedback. GO GET SOME!

You

PresentationParents/Peers

No audience? Present to the furniture. But aloud. Try it!

They are a pretty easy audience!

Look at your audience and show enthusiasm!

Check the classroom the day before for equipment and set up.

Get to the room earlyBe sure information is correctly sent to the teacher. Use a flash drive as a backup.

Presentation check listKnow what you are talking about –be passionate – Share something new and interestingGet Organized Keep it Simple Practice

All this leads to….

Great Presentations!

Now Go Get’emHave Fun!

Using What You’ve Learned: Presentation Pre-Plan• In your group, out your

PowerPoint Presentation slides. (This works for other media, too, like Prezi.) Figure out your and get excited!

your information (you’ll need to for this one).

What will go where, and in what order? How many slides will you have if you have only ONE IDEA per

slide? What backgrounds will you use for each slide?
