Aspiring Minds' National Trainers' Skills Report 2

Vocational trainers play a pivotal role in reducing the skill gap that exists invocational sectors by imparting training and development to new recruits. Therefore, it becomes imperative for them to be highly proficient in therequisite domain skills, along with possessing the adequate teaching acumen.

In this report, we provide an in-depth analysis of the proficiency of vocationalskill trainers in teaching skills and in their respective domain. The reportevaluates skill levels of trainers in eight vocational skill sectors – Apparel,Construction, Healthcare, Retail, Automobiles and components,Electronics/IT/ITeS/Hardware, Logistics and Tourism & Hospitality.

This report is based on the evaluation of over 500 vocational trainers whoparticipated in the Skill India Fellowship conducted by Aspiring Minds. Thesetrainers were assessed by conducting an online test, followed by an interviewwith a highly qualified jury. The trainers were evaluated on three areas –teaching aptitude and pedagogy, information gathering and synthesis skills anddomain knowledge in their respective sector.

Introduction

Aspiring Minds' National Trainers' Skills Report 3

The key findings of the present study are as follows:

The study unveils that only 27.73% trainers have the required professional skillset in their choice of industry. Construction sector has as low as 7.14% trainers with requisite professional skill level, while Tourism/Hospitality sector has the highest percentage of 71.43%.

Lowest percent trainers with requisite skill proficiency observed in construction sector can be ascribed to their low performance in AMCAT modules – Instructor Aptitude Test, Information Gathering & Synthesis and Domain module.

Upon application of individual benchmarks on AMCAT modules, we find that only 48% trainers clear the cut-off for cognitive skill, 51% for instructor aptitude and 59% for domain knowledge.

Gender demographic analysis uncovers that females have higher skill competence and AMCAT scores. Similar analysis for the type of current city shows that, as expected, metro cities are likely to produce more skilled trainers than the non-metro cities.

City zones form pairs in terms of performance, where one pair is of North & South and the other is East & West having similar quality of trainers within the respective pair with the former being more prowess than the latter.

Age and experience of trainers do not act as a strong differentiating criteria of performance. However, highest educational degree is a good predictor of industry readiness, hence higher the qualification, the better is the skill level.

1. Sector-wise Analysis

a. Skill comparison

• Benchmarking studies done by Aspiring Minds quantifies minimum professional threshold for different sectors by a theoretical understanding and empirical validation of the knowledge, cognitive skills and domain expertise required.

• On applying the minimum required threshold, we find that percentage of trainers who have the requisite skill level varies from 7.14% in Construction sector to 56.86% in Tourism/Hospitality sector.

• As low as 27 out of 100 trainers show professional competence in their choice of role. It is crucial to take proper measures to improve these figures.

Skill gap analysis was carried out as part of this study. The analysis was individually carried out for each module. A skill gap exists if the trainer does not meet the required threshold/cut-off in that particular module. Hence, a trainer can have a skill gap in one or more modules.

DOMAIN MODULE

• Maximum skill gap is observed for Information Gathering & Synthesis (IGS) module, where only 48% trainer are able to demonstrate requisite cognitive skillset.

• IGS is followed by Instructor Aptitude test, where 51% can which is slightly more than that observed for IGS.

• Least gap is observed for Domain module. However only 60% trainer being able to clear the minimum industry threshold raises great concern for the vocational skill development.

3. Demographic Analysis

a. Gender

• Females are observed to be more proficient than males. To further understand the gap, the study also investigates skills which are deficient in males when compared with those in females.

• The reason for higher proficiency in females than males can be accredited to their performance in cognitive and domain skills.

• Contrary to the popular opinion, instructor aptitude is not the area of highest score difference.

Current city Throughput

Metro 38.52%

Non Metro 23.46%

• As expected, a drop in proficiency level is observed for trainers from non-metro cities when compared with those from metro cities. This can be attributed to better exposure and training facilities available in metro cities.

• It is observed that trainers from metro cities have higher scores across all modules. Widest gap of 90 points is observed in instructor aptitude, followed by cognitive (61 points) and domain knowledge (45 points).
