Presentation Notes
So, what IS Academic Advising? I'm sure you have asked yourself questions like, "what classes do I need for my major?" "how many classes do I have to take in order to graduate?" And "what if I don't even know what my major is?" No worries at all. The process of Academic Advising is going to help eliminate your uncertainties so that your progression from high school to college is indeed smooth. We will support your endeavors and your decisions along the way- with help when you need it!

Think of Academic Advisors as your tour guides throughout your academic journey here at the University of Memphis. Tell us your aspirations so that we can help you achieve them. How are we going to do this? We have several different programs that help us monitor your degree progress and completion. I'll explain some of these later as you have access to them too! Academic Advisors pride themselves in conveying accurate information regarding requirements and majors.
Page 4: PowerPoint Presentation · Think of Academic Advisors as your tour guides throughout your academic journey here at the University of Memphis. ... Intro to Modern Pol Thought—Fundamental

• UofM requirement *every semester* so you can register

• Ensure you are taking the correct courses

• Keep students aware of current academic policies

Why should you get advised?

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Ok, we have told you what academic advising is and what an academic advisor's role consists of.. You might be thinking, "why should I get advised?" Well, first and foremost, it is REQUIRED to get advised every semester so that you can register for your courses. Let me repeat that one. More. Time. You are REQUIRED. Every student at the UofM has a "pin" placed on their file which does not allow them to enroll in courses unless their advisor CLEARS their pin. So, the key to enrolling in courses is through your Academic Advisor. The UofM wants to make sure that you are taking the correct courses, staying on track, and that you are aware of current academic policies.
Page 5: PowerPoint Presentation · Think of Academic Advisors as your tour guides throughout your academic journey here at the University of Memphis. ... Intro to Modern Pol Thought—Fundamental

What should you expect from your advisor?

• Have personalized conversations with you about goals• Discuss your academic strengths and challenges• If applicable, discuss previous college credit such as AP, IB, and Dual Enrollment

credit• Be accessible through email, phone calls, and appointments• NOT enroll you in your courses, students register themselves into their courses

every semester• Refer you to other campus resources when needed

Presenter
Presentation Notes
In your Academic Advising appointment, you will have down to earth conversations with your advisor about your goals, your strengths, and challenges that are undoubtably going to occur. One of my main pieces of advice that I always tell my advisees is- keep the lines of communication OPEN with me. I need to know if you have AP, IB, or Dual Enrollment credit. We expect that you'll tell us everything about your academic file- Do you receive the Hope Scholarship? Are you receiving a Pell Grant or Loans from the Federal Government? Are you a Marching Band Member? These are all things we need to know. We will be available to you via email, phone call and eventually- once we have clearance- face to face appointments. One thing that you should NOT expect us to do- is register you for your classes. Students are required to enroll themselves in classes every semester. And let it be known that we do not know everything, so don't expect that of us either- however, when we don't know the answer to something we will certainly refer you to the representative that does know the answer!

Presentation Notes
This diagram shows an equation that maps out your degree requirements. There are four categories that make up your Bachelor's Degree: General Education Courses, College/Department Courses, Major Courses and Elective courses. A minimum of 120 hours is required to graduate. Some majors require more than 120.  Your advisor will go into more depth about the specifics of your major in your individual advising appt. You can actually review your degree requirements in the UofM's undergraduate catalog to prepare for your appointment.
Page 8: PowerPoint Presentation · Think of Academic Advisors as your tour guides throughout your academic journey here at the University of Memphis. ... Intro to Modern Pol Thought—Fundamental

General Education

• 41 hours of coursework (13 courses)

• Provides foundation for upper division and major-specific courses

• Some majors prescribe specific general education courses to satisfy degree requirements

Presenter
Presentation Notes
In most cases, General Education is a very typical place to start when an advisor builds a schedule for a first time freshman student. The next couple of slides will inform you of every General Education category. It's 41 hours, or 13 courses, of academic coursework. Most classes are three credit hours which means you will spend approximately three hours per week in class. We consider this the "framework" of your degree. Let me stress immensely that some majors require CERTAIN courses to satisfy CERTAIN categories. When you view the next couple of slides and you see all the different courses listed- know that you might have picked a major that has prescribed general education courses and you might not be eligible to pick whatever you want. I assure you that your advisor will help you with this every step of the way.

The next sample schedule we have comes from the Fogelman College of Business. If you are a business major, your Fall 2020 schedule could possibly look like this. Again, 15 credits or five classes, spread evenly throughout the week (which is definitely something that advisors promote to students). This schedule consists of ENGL 1010, MATH 1710, MIS 2749, MUS 1030, and ACAD 1100.

ACAD 1100

• ACAD 1100 is a 3 credit hour elective available to incoming Freshmen in their first semester.

• Over 50% of the incoming freshmen class takes ACAD 1100 the first semester

• ACAD has been taught at the UofM for over 25 years

• ACAD is taught by UofM faculty and staff who are committed to helping freshmen have a successful college career

Presenter
Presentation Notes
ACAD 1100 has now been mentioned a couple of times. This is by far one of my favorite topics to talk about as I have taught ACAD 1100 for five years. This course is a 3 credit hour elective that is available to incoming freshmen during their first semester at UofM. Over half of the freshmen class elects to take ACAD 1100. So, as you can imagine, this is a very popular course. It has been taught on our campus for over 25 years and has a great reputation for being a crowd favorite due to the faculty and staff who are devoted to assisting freshmen with their transition into college.

Tiger Learning Communities Make friends and meet people with similar interests

Easier to form study groups

What is it?• A group of 20-25 students enroll in

the same 2-4 classes• Made up of common, core classes• Specifically selected instructors• Taught at the most popular class

times

Ask your advisor about joining one!memphis.edu/learningcommunities

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Another freshmen transition program at the University of Memphis is the Tiger Learning Communities (or TLC) program.  It is different from Academic Strategies, as ACAD 1100 is a class while a learning community is a GROUP of classes in which the same 20-25 students are enrolled. These courses are common, core classes. Each Tiger learning community has an anchor course that ties the theme of the community. We choose instructors who are engaging, we pick popular class times—no 8:00 am classes, and TLCs are open to ALL incoming UofM Freshmen. There are many benefits: developing a supportive network around campus, much easier to form study groups, make a deeper connection with faculty and staff members, aids in a smooth transition to the UofM, and you're going to make a lot of friends with similar interests!

Here is an example of one of the Tiger Learning Communities that we offer: Creating College Connections. The courses within the community are ACAD 1100 (the anchor course), ENGL 1010, (English Composition), and PSYC 1030 (General Psychology). Notice that the days and times are already set so if you enroll in this TLC, three of your courses are already set which are nine hours. Now in order have a total of 15 hours (the amount recommended that students take each semester), you and your academic advisor would decide on two other classes to add to your schedule that does not interfere with the times of the classes in the TLC.

This total will come to 16 credit hours.

Earlier I mentioned that there were many different programs that Academic Advisors use in order to monitor students' progression. You can find this particular tool within your MyMemphis portal under the My Degree tab. UMdegree is a wealth of knowledge as it includes your major and minor requirements.

Next, Navigate is a program that connects administrators, faculty, staff and advisors to their students. Many departments use this as their appointment scheduling platform for advising, tutoring and coaching. Students' class attendance is also tracked through this program.

As we are wrapping up our presentation, we would like to touch on Registration since (again) students register themselves. First, you will be required to "meet" with your advisor. As stated in a previous slide, you will be sent a welcome email that explains your next steps in meeting with your specific advisor. After you have planned classes with your advisor, and your "pin" has been cleared, you will be eligible for registration. You will log into the MyMemphis portal with your username and password. You will click on the Student Tab and look for the Registration Tools portlet. Click on Look Up Classes and select the Fall 2020 Term. Search for a subject such as ENGL and select "View Sections" to see all ENGL courses. You will want to click the specific ENGL course that you and your advisor discussed. You will then see a long list of days, times, professors and locations. Click the small box next to the particular section you want and scroll to the bottom of the page. You will then click Register. Now, you will repeat this exact process for each class.

of this in the "location" column• If your major allows, consider ACAD 1100 and/or a

Quick Tips are listed on this slide for building your schedule... First, enroll in 15 credit hours or 5 classes at least. Be sure to choose your course times carefully. Some students enjoy morning classes- while others do not. Pay close attention to start and end dates of courses. UofM offers full semester courses and half semester courses. Half semester courses move rapidly through material since they are condensed. Be sure to watch for WEB based courses. There is nothing wrong with online courses if that's what you wish to take, but sometimes students accidentally enroll in an online course. Speaking of common mistakes, sometimes students accidentally enroll in Collierville or Jackson TN courses. If you do not plan to drive to these locations, then don't pick those! Lastly, if your major allows, consider taking ACAD 1100 and/or enrolling in a Tiger Learning Community- you won't be disappointed in that decision.

Your advising appointment will last about 30 to 40 minutes. Please be sure to have a computer nearby so that, together, you and your advisor can have an effective meeting. At the end of your appointment, you should have a clear understanding of which classes have been planned for you to take in Fall 2020. If you are having trouble enrolling, please inform your advisor.

Familial Involvement

• Family involvement is important as you begin at the UofM

• Academic Advising appointment should be left as a one-on-one meeting because:• Advisors want to get to know you—the student• Advisors want to encourage students to initiate

conversations about their academic experiences so take good notes for your parents!

Last but certainly not least, we would like to talk about your family [and support system]. While we know the value that can be found in family members being involved in your journey here at the UofM, we feel strongly that the Academic Advising appointment should be left as a one-on-one meeting. We already know that these appointments are going to look and feel a bit different due to our current circumstances. We want to get to know YOU- the student- and we don't have very long to do it! Lets preserve that space for advisors and students only. Once the appointment is over, tell your family everything we talked about- that actually reinforces that you listened and understood!
