When organizing for your leading days you need to take into consideration:

• the personal qualities of individuals in this class

• How to build teams so you will have individual leaders on each

• Who will you turn to for assistance in team situations

Recreational Activity vs. Sport Activity

Apply this concept:

• When selecting your activity you need to keep in mind these types and the class you have.

• For our purposes you can select a combination of the two if you think it would work better for our class.

Coaching Styles

Authoritarian (brick wall) – Sets the rules without necessary considering the players

Permissive (jelly fish) – Lets the players dictate the rules rather than themselves

Authoritative (backbone) – Flexible to listen, but also stays in control of the players

Factors That Affect Coaching

Types of Tournaments

Round Robin Tournament

• Provides the opportunity for a number of teams in a league to play against one another

• Advantage: equal number of games for all teams

• Disadvantages: takes a great deal of time

Double Elimination

• Involves a schedule in which teams or individuals must lose twice before they are eliminated from the event.

• Advantage: guaranteed minimum of two games for each player and a shortened game schedule.

• Disadvantage: participation is reduced by having a limit of two losses

Single Elimination Tournament

• Events in which players or teams are eliminated after one loss.

• Best suited to events where ability level has been pre-determined and participants are well matched.

• Advantages: quick tournament when time does not allow for a long schedule

• Disadvantages: most participants have very limited opportunities to play

Challenge Tournament

• Best suited for events which can run over an extended period of time. Their purpose is to encourage participants to challenge one another, and if successful, to move ahead on a ladder or pyramid.

• Advantage: can establish ability levels in preparation for other types of tournaments

• Disadvantage: after initial play and changing of positions, the number of challenges usually decreases, leading to fewer games for all participants.

Challenge: Ladder• Players are placed on the ladder through

random selection or according to ability (Sometimes it is a good idea to place the better players at the bottom of the ladder to encourage greater movement on the ladder)

• A player advances by defeating another player one or two places higher on the ladder

• The winning player changes positions with the losing player. If the challenger loses, the positions on the ladder remain the same. The losing challenger cannot issue a re-challenge intil they have played against another player.

Challenge Tournament: Pyramid

• Similar to ladder• The difference: a player must win at

least one game on his or her row before challenging a player in a higher row.

Challenge Tournament: Funnel

• Combination of ladder and pyramid tournaments.• Provides for numerous entries• The top 4 places are selected in order of ability• Players attempt to advance to the top of the

upside down funnel

Challenge Tournament: Spider Web

• Also know as the hexagon• Conducted according to the rules of the

pyramid tournament.• The objective is to advance to the center

and to hold that position.• Disadvantage: the player in the middle

must accept numerous challenges from the 6 outside the hexagon. To reduce some of the pressure on this player, a rule requiring players to play someone on their own level before permitting them to challenge the center position could be enforced.

Challenge Tournament: Round-the Clock

• Participants are placed at each hour position on the clock face

• Rules may be set with one of two objectives for the winner; the winner is the player who advances in a clockwise direction and is in the 12 o’clock position at the end of the regulation time, or the winner is the first player to make one complete revolution around the clock back to his or her original starting position.

• The big hand indicates the winning hour position.

Factors that Affect Tournament Building

• Environmental conditions (weather)• Facility Conditions (location,

availability, access, equipment)• Participants, teams, coaches/leaders• Observers, fans, media

Refereeing

• A referee is a person, or group of people who officiate the game through best judgments of violations/infractions of rules, laws and regulations

• Computers and videos have become a huge asset for referees.

Factors that Affect Refereeing

• Changes in rules, regulations (clear understanding of rules and regs)

• Participants• Coaches• Observers, fans, media

Conflict Resolution

Definition:The process of ending a problem (conflict)

by cooperating and problem-solvingTypes of conflict:Interpersonal (disagreements between

groups of any size), Internal (struggles within yourself)

Conflict Resolution TacticsRespect – an essential element to resolving positivelyRights – Having respect means not violating other

people’s basic rights (no one has the right to control or harm another or destroy property; right to privacy..)

Responsibility – take responsibility for your actions (do not just blame the other person, look at your part, make responsible decisions that involve all parties)

Tolerance- accepting others’ differences and allowing them to be who they are without expressing disapproval

Negotiation – using compromise to reach agreementMediation – using a third party to help reach an

agreement

Evaluation

We have seen aspects of these topics throughout the course…

1. In pre-assigned groups complete: Pre-planning question sheet

2. Complete assessment of a pre-selected peer group using an evaluation rubric given to you by teacher.

3. Organize and run a 2 day tournament of the activity of your choice.
