Coconut• Promising varieties of coconut for VCO and coco sugar production

• Selected best hybrids and dwarf varieties with high toddy yield (up to 1,112 kg sugar/tree/mo) and virgin oil (up to 78 ml/nut) recommended for sugar sap and VCO commercial production

• Management strategies against pests of coconut• Integrated Pest Management for coconut scale insect (CSI) infestation and

Brontispa. • Protocol for mass rearing and release protocol of CSI biological control

agents. • Improved mass propagation technique for coconut

• An alternative technique for mass propagation of coconut which involves the use of plumules from mature coconut to produce true-to-type planting materials.

• Can produce up to 1,000 seedlings from a single plumule.

Mud Crab• Soft shell crab farming• A culture system where juvenile crabs are placed in

perforated boxes and harvested at molting stage to produce soft, pliable mud crabs that can be eaten whole when cooked

• Marine annelids for broodstock diet• Life cycle and culture system for mass production of

marine annelids for mud crab broodstock diet

Slaughter Goat

Slaughter Goat• The goat industry is characterized by a very low population

base. And this is traceable to 2 basic factors. First is the high extraction or slaughter rate. There is a strong informal domestic market for chevon but production is unable to cope with increasing demand for many years. Hence number of goats slaughtered is continuously exceeding the number of goats being born alive. This is manifested by the declining goat inventories at the farm level.

• Second is low productivity. Low productivity stems from 5 problems, i.e., low conception rates, long production cycles, high kid mortalities, and low weights at market age. This is aggravated by the lack of knowledge of farmers on the improved management.

Slaughter Goat• The GOAT ISP is an attempt to address these gaps in a

holistic way.• To reduce kid mortality and improve overall kid

performance, interventions have to start with the doe. • To address the long production cycle due mainly to lack of

access of bucks and seasonality of the breeding period of goats, non-invasive heat induction techniques will also be developed to stimulate estrus and off-season breeding. AI will also be introduced to give farmers access to goat semen even without maintaining a buck.

Slaughter Goat• Decrease kid mortality by 24%• Improve market weights by introducing the Artificial

Insemination Delivery System (AI-DS) and improve the cryopreservation of processed semen for AI.• To teach geographically dispersed farmers all these, the

Farmer's Livestock School - Goat Enterprise Management (FLS-GEM) will be developed wherein 2400 farmers will be trained. • Develop protocols on halal goat production, assurance

system, and chevon processing

Banana• Fusarium wilt tropical race 4 (Foc TR4)-resistant Cavendish• New banana variety selected from somaclonal variation of

Cavendish (originally from Taiwan) with resistance to Fusarium wilt tropical race 4 (caused by Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense). Two potential somaclones, Giant Cavendish Tissue Culture Variant (GCTCV) 218 and 219 shows resistance to Foc TR4, good yield, and acceptability to foreign market.

• Banana bunchy top virus (BBTV)-resistant Lakatan• Lakatan banana lines developed by induced mutation

through irradiation which shows moderate resistance to BBTV.

• Selection and breeding• True-to-type breeder Camarines, Darag, Manok Bisaya and

Zampen Native Chickens that produce 120 eggs/hen/yr and lower mortality rate.

Seaweeds • The Seaweeds Industry Strategic S&T Program aims to

achieve the following:• Increase in yield/ha by 20%• Expand seaweed farming areas by 10% for the next 3 to 5

years. • Increase in SRC production by 10% and with better quality• Reduce importation if not to eliminate• Seaweed germplasm bank established• Guidelines for management of production losses in

seaweed farms
