and people looking for sports partners you will nd here the rst

information. The site is available in Czech and English.

Page 3: Prague in Motion

Prague is at irst glance a city of great history and striking monuments – be it Prague Castle, Charles Bridge or the astronomical clock on the Old Town Square. To be fair, the city has a lot more to ofer its visitors. It’s no exaggeration to say that Prague is also a sports capital, as is borne out by the guidebook you are holding right now.

Prague is dotted all over with countless places to spend your leisure

time actively. There really is something here for everyone. What’s more, you can explore and try out new things and meet like-minded people. Sport really does bring people together! And, as a bonus, you’ll discover a whole new side to the city.

It doesn’t matter whether you prefer dynamic sports, or just long to stretch quietly, whether you’d rather calm the mind or pump up some adrenalin. It doesn’t matter what the thermometer says, nor whether the city is being bathed in sunlight or cosseted in fresh snow. You might want to have some fun with your friends, to get to know a new crowd or just to get some time alone. Whatever you choose, Prague always has just your kind of answer and a whole host of possibilities.

Here you will ind up-to-date itness centres, even right in the heart of the city. Thanks to the Vltava River, Prague is open for water sports, too. In the midst of all that big city hustle-and-bustle you can ind a whole gamut of parks and gardens, which are not just an oasis of peace and relaxation, but your invitation to do some ever-popular jogging or Nordic walking.

That is by no means the end of it all, as you can see for yourself in our guide. It sets out not to provide a complete and comprehensive overview of all the sports opportunities in Prague, since you would hardly want to carry around such a great tome. Nevertheless, we’re sure you’ll gain valuable inspiration out of it, and get the best out of the Czech capital’s sporty side.

80 Kiting / Paddleboard

KitingKiting is a relatively young sport that has many forms and ofshoots. The principle of this sport is to harness the power of the wind pushing against the kite. Kiting comes in 3 basic types depending on what kind of surface you are going on – snowkiting, landkiting and kiteboarding.

Best Kitestel. +420 736 767 231 / www.kite-skola.cz

One of the biggest Czech kite schools focused on snowkiting, landkiting and kiteboarding. One-day or two-day courses take place from April to November in Prague in Vypich or in Uhříněves (wherever the wind is best).

The company is focused on snowkiting, landkiting and kiteboarding. The training school has facilities for large gatherings (up to 100 people) and the facilities of a training centre in Prague and in other localities across the Czech Republic. There are also courses for juniors (children over 8 years) or the disabled (in cooperation with the “Adrenalin bez bariér” – ‘adrenalin without frontiers’ association).

PaddleboardPaddleboarding is a young ofshoot of canoeing, in which a rider on a board similar to a suring longboard propels themselves with a long paddle. It is also sometimes abbreviated to SUP (Stand Up Paddle = paddling in a standing position). This kind of paddling

Other recommended sites: Žluté lázně (p. 45) and Kanál Troja (p. 23)

SlacklineSlacklining is seeing a great boom in recent years and is becoming a popular sports discipline. The principle is simple. You walk (balanc-ing) on a strap, tensioned between two points (usually trees). Unlike tightrope walking, the strap is more or less flexible and you use your own body movement to keep your balance.

The most popular places for slacklining in Prague include the Stromovka park (p. 8), Letná park (p. 8) or Ladronka (p. 46). You will ind an interactive map of the main slackline sites on www.lajny.cz/mapa-slackline-lokalit.

Prague Castle gardensPrague Castle, Prague 1 – Malá Stranatel. +420 224 371 111 / www.hrad.czGPS: 50.093258, 14.401951

The Royal Garden is historically the most notable of all the castle

gardens. Although inspired by Italian designs, the current layout

of the gardens follows on from an English-style adaptation during

the mid-19th century. One of its greatest treasures is the Singing fountain, which rightfully has its place among the most beautiful Renaissance water fountains north of the Alps. Overlooked, and unjustly so, is the Deer moat (Jelení příkop) – a quiet natural ravine, where game used to be kept. The Southern gardens (Rajská, Na Valech and Hartigovská) stretching out beneath the southern frontage of Prague Castle, ofer charming views of the Old Town, Lesser Town and Petřín Hill nearby.

The Palace Gardens under Prague CastleValdštejnská 12 – 14, Praha 1 – Malá Stranatel. +420 257 214 817 / www.palacove-zahrady.czGPS: 50.090719, 14.406021

On the southern slopes below Prague Castle is a complex of interconnected historical gardens (Ledeburská, Malá and Velká Pálffyovská, Kolovratská and Malá Fürstenberská gardens). All the palace terrace gardens enjoy rich architectural decoration, with decorative staircases, balustrades, panoramic terraces, gloriettes and pavilions intertwined with vegetation to form scenic compositions. This is an ideal place to make romantic proposals or to recharge your batteries after a busy day.

A geometrically strictly laid out early baroque garden came into being in parallel with the construction of the Wallenstein Palace in the years 1623-1629. Imposing at irst sight is the colossal construction on three axes – the so-called sala terrena, and an artiicial stalactite wall – cavern (grotto). As you walk along the gardens you will be accompanied by free-ranging peacocks, while in the aviary there are some owls to look at.

A palatial town garden in the Italian style is a jewel among the Italian baroque gardens of the whole of Central Europe. In terms of size it belongs with the smaller gardens, yet in terms of architectural originality of design in such an irregular area on a slope and in terms of the artistic and historical value of its decoration, it is of world importance. We recommend in particular an evening tour of the illuminated garden (booking needed), when you will enjoy this quiet and intimate place in all its glory.
