THE LAST TIME Jackson State has had Prairie View A&M’s number for quite some time as the Panthers ended a four-game losing streak to JSU last season as they won in Jackson, Miss. for the first time since 1970. Outside of last year’s win and wins in 2007 and 2005, JSU has dominated the series with a 28-game win-ning streak from 1973 to 2004. Saturday’s game also marks the first time Jackson State will return to the area since 2007 as the games in 2011 and 2013 were played in Shreveport, La. Since the SWAC went to divisional play and instituted sev-en-game mandates on several occasions since 1999, both teams have only met 11 times since 1999.

HISTORY MADE Head coach Willie Simmons has made history as he’s the first, first-year head coach at PVAMU since Hoover Wright in 1966 to have a winning season. Simmons’ eight wins are the most at PVAMU since 2010 and his win last Saturday marked the most wins at PVAMU since the 2009 campaign.

undefeated at home With Waller ISD Stadium PVAMU’s adopted home stadium this fall, the Panthers have taken to their new surroundings with a 4-0 mark. The last time the Panthers finished the sea-son undefeated at home occurred in 2009.

POINTS, POINTS AND MORE POINTS PVAMU has the top offense in the SWAC at 484 yards per game and ranks second in scoring offense with 43.7 points per game while JSU averages 25.3 points per game and 382.8 total offensive yards. Over the past two seasons, the teams have combined to score 117 points.

FCS PLAYOFFS AT STAKE? Due to Grambling State’s win last weekend over Arkan-sas-Pine Bluff, the SWAC West has been clinched but all is not lost as the team still has an opportunity to receive an at-large bid to the Football Championship Subdivision Playoffs at the end of the month. A win on Saturday would strengthen PVAMU’s overall resume as the official bracket will be unveiled on Sunday, Nov. 22 at 10 a.m. on ESPNU. No SWAC team has participated in the playoffs since 1998 due to the league for-feiting its automatic bid in 1999 due to the creation of the SWAC Championship.

BLOCKING MACHINE Senior Nick Brewer is on the verge of history as he’s climbing up the charts as he leads the nation in blocked kicks with six. His six blocks places him two away from tying the all-time FCS season record (8). He’s tied for 12th all-time amongst players in season combined blocked kicks and one away for single season blocked punts.

A CHANGE HAS COME With a new head football coach in Willie Simmons, the PVAMU football staff underwent a drastic change in the offseason as only assistant head coach Bubba McDowell and safeties coach KJ Black returned to the staff. The Prairie View A&M football staff is well-traveled across the football landscape as several FBS and FCS conferences are represented on the staff. Simmons hails from the ACC (Clem-son) and is joined by recruiting coordinator/defensive tackles coach Jo Nixon (Florida State). Linebackers coach Willie Mack Garza played in the old Southwest Conference (Tex-as) while wide receivers coach Reggie Moore played in the Pac-12 at UCLA. McDowell and cornerbacks coach Bran-don Sharp were Big East standouts at Miami and Louisville, respectively. Defensive coordinator Ralph Street played at Marshall in the MAC while offensive coordinator/offensive line coach Alex Jackson and tight ends coach Joseph Henry both played in the SEC at Georgia and Arkansas, respectively. Black began his career at Western Kentucky in the Sun Belt before transferring to Prairie View A&M for his final two seasons.

NOT SO GREEN Quarterback Trey Green has grown up quickly in his first full season as a starter. The Beaumont, Texas native ranks second in the SWAC with 273.2 passing yards per game and ranks fourth in pass efficiency (151.9) with 20 touchdowns.

DEPTH FOR AGES Expected to be the strength of the team entering the fall, the running back position lived up to expectations on opening weekend in its season opening win at Texas Southern with 290 yards on the ground. The Panthers are five-deep at running back with three backs (Johnta’ Hebert, Courtney Brown, Fred Ander-son) who’ve led the team in rushing at one point in their ca-reers and two (Brown, Hebert) who’ve rushed for 1,000 yards in a season. Hebert leads the team with 80.6 yards per game and four touchdowns.

ALL-PURPOSE A preseason FCS All-American, Johnta’ Hebert is picking up right where he left off as he leads the Panthers in all-purpose yardage (198.7), rushing (80.6) and receptions (46). He’s averaging 198.7 all-purpose yards per game and ranks second nationally in the category. Hebert also ranks 14th nationally amongst FCS kick returners with a 26.3 yards per game average.

TURNING IT AROUND If the Panthers have aspirations of winning the SWAC this season, their defensive unit has to match the production the offense has produced over the past several years. Under new defensive coordinator Ralph Street, the defense made a successful debut as they allowed only 290 yards at Texas Southern and compiled four sacks and two in-terceptions. After a rough patch, the Panthers allowed only 297 yards against Mississippi Valley State on Oct. 10 with 75 yards coming via a busted play. The Panthers also held UAPB in check with 373 total yards and six consecutive three-and-outs in the second half. Against Alabama State, PVAMU held them to only 283 yards.

SPREADING THE WEALTH Playing wide receiver in Willie Simmons’ offense has to be exciting as a total of 17 players have caught a pass. Johnta’ Hebert leads the way with 42 receptions for 537 yards and four touchdowns followed by 411 yards, two touchdowns and 23 receptions from KhaDarel Hodge. Nick Pitre has 354 yards, 20 receptions and six touch-downs while Demarquo LaStrappe has 366 yards on 19 receptions. Andrew Michael has 10 receptions for 150 yards followed by Rayshaun Givins’ 14 receptions for 109 yards and Raymond Jackson’s 238 yards on 14 receptions.

TACKLE MACHINE PVAMU linebacker Jalan Coleman has led PVAMU in tackles in four of the team’s 10 games and was the SWAC Newcomer of the Week on Sept. 14 and Nov. 9. He has com-piled 66 tackles and 5.5 tackles for loss at this point of the season.

PLENTY OF FIREPOWER BACK The cupboard is not bare as six starters are back from one of the most exciting offensive units in the nation. The Panthers will have to replace NFL free agent signee Jerry Lovelocke at quarterback but he will be surrounded by one of the top back-fields in all of FCS in seniors Johnta’ Hebert and Court-ney Brown. After a career-best 2014 season, Hebert looks to close out his career at Prairie View A&M in style as the Baton Rouge, La. native was named to the 2015 STATS FCS Preseason All-America Team as an all-purpose back. Last season, Hebert led the FCS in all-purpose yards per game (225.3) and finished second in the SWAC in rushing with 1,063 yards (106.3 ypg). He also had six games of 100-plus yard performances with a high of 157 versus Alcorn State. Hebert also had at least one rushing touchdown in nine of the team’s 10 games.

Hebert was also recently named to the 2015 STATS FCS Offensive Player of the Year Watch List. The STATS FCS Offen-sive Player of the Year Watch List can undergo revision during the 2015 season. A national panel of over 150 sports informa-tion and media relations directors, broadcasters, writers and other dignitaries will vote on the winner following the regular season. Brown, a redshirt senior running back from Lake Charles, La., suffered a preseason knee injury last season and was forced to miss all of 2014. Prior to the injury, Brown burst onto the scene in 2013 as he surpassed the 1,000-yard mark and became the first running back to do so at PVAMU since 2008 and only the second back at the school since 1988 at the time.

BUILDING BLOCKS PVAMU has had its fair share of defensive struggles over the past few seasons but there is light at the end of the tunnel as the team returns a pair of All-SWAC sophomore defenders in defensive lineman DeVohn Reed and defensive back Da-mond Jackson. In 2014, Reed had a breakout season as the Houston na-tive earned All-SWAC honors which saw him account for 36 tackles, seven tackles for loss and two sacks. Sophomore defensive back Damond Jackson (80 tackles) earned All-SWAC Second Team Honors last season and was a Jerry Rice Award Watch List nominee for most of the season. Several freshmen saw extensive playing time on the defen-sive line last season and should improve on their production as the team will have to fill big holes at linebacker with the graduations of SWAC Defensive Player of the Year Jerome Howard and first teamer Danny Brownell.

DEEP IN THE HEART OF TEXAS After only three games at home last season, the schedule has flipped this season as the Panthers have five home games (played in Waller, Texas) with eight total games played in the state of Texas.

NEW STADIUM ON THE WAY SOON In what can only be described as an historic moment at Prairie View A&M University (PVAMU), the $60 million dollar Football Stadium & Athletic Field House is currently under con-struction. The two-year project, which began in December, included the demolition of the existing Blackshear Field and the con-struction of a new state-of-the-art facility in the same loca-tion. The complex will feature a 15,000-seat stadium, with the capability of expansion to 30,000-seats. Prairie View A&M will play its home games at nearby Waller Stadium for the 2015 season.

ON DECK The Panthers are done with their regular season on Saturday and will await their fate to the FCS Playoffs as the selection is on Sunday, Nov. 22.

GAME 5PRAIRIE VIEW A&M 42UNIVERSITY OF FAITH 0SATURDAY, OCT. 3, 2015WALLER ISD STADIUM•WALLER, TEXAS Prairie View A&M led from start to finish as they rolled over University of Faith 42-0 in a non-conference affair at Waller ISD Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The Panthers scored on their first possession as De’Aun-tre Smiley capped off of a six-play, 49-yard drive with a 14-yard touchdown pass to KhaDarel Hodge. Two drives lat-er, the Panthers went up 14-0 as Johnta’ Hebert rushed in from 49 yards out followed by Owen Hoolihan’s PAT. The Panthers slowed down towards the end of the half as they turned the ball over on downs at the UOF 14 along with a Green interception as time expired. Prairie View A&M handed Alcorn State its second straight home loss holding on for a 40-34 victory Saturday af-ternoon. After trailing by 19 point points in the second half, the Braves (5-3, 4-2) fell short in its second half comeback effort against the Panthers (6-2, 6-1) 40-34. PVAMU struck first with a 20-yard touchdown run by Courtney Brown in the first quarter. After a 3-and-out by the Braves, a Haiden McCraney punt was blocked by Nick Brewer and returned for a 40-yard touchdown by Fredrick Anderson to put the Panthers up 12-0. Later in the quarter, Brewer blocked his second punt, scooped it and returned it for a 30-yard touchdown to make the score 19-0. After a poor start by the Braves, backup quarterback Lenorris Footman put them on the board with a 36-yard touchdown scramble. The Braves momentum spilled over into the sec-ond quarter when Footman rushed for a 52-yard touchdown run that cut the Panthers lead to five. The Panthers answered when Anderson rushed for a 7-yard touchdown, his second of the half, to give them a 26-14 lead. WILLIE SIMMONSHead Football Coach • Prairie View A&M University

Renowned offensive coordinator Willie Simmons has been selected as the 32nd head football coach in Prairie View A&M history on December 15, 2014. Simmons comes to Prairie View A&M after an impressive three-year stint as the offensive coordinator at Alcorn State, which recently won the SWAC and SBN Black College National Championships. With Simmons on staff, Alcorn State fielded one of the most potent offenses in the country as they led the SWAC in seven offensive categories while also finishing second in the nation amongst Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) teams in scoring offense with 44 points per game during the 2014 season. Alcorn State quarterback John Gibbs, Jr. flourished in Simmons’ offense as he was named SWAC Co-Offensive Player of the Year while breaking several long-standing records held by ASU legend and former NFL standout Steve “Air” McNair. In addition to Gibbs’ accolades, ASU had four players who rushed for at least 691 yards and a balanced wide receiving corps which featured four players catching 22-plus receptions.

In Simmons’ second season at Alcorn State in 2013, the Braves had a major turnaround offensively from his first season as they finished sec-ond in total offense, second in scoring offense, third in rushing offense, fourth in pass offense and third in pass efficiency. Three offensive players earned All-SWAC honors with senior Arnold Walker having a career season as he led the SWAC in rushing yards (1,191) and rushing touchdowns (16). Walker also finished as ASU’s all-time rushing leader and the Braves finished 9-3 and had their first winning season since 2006 and nine-win campaign since 1984. Prior to Alcorn State, Simmons spent five seasons at Middle Tennessee State University and was a part of history as MTSU had its most suc-cessful run during his tenure. As one of the newest members in the Football Bowl Subdivision (former Division I) level at the time, the Blue Red Raiders made two consecutive postseason bowl appearances for the first time in school history (2008 and 2009) and set an MTSU FBS-record with 10 wins in 2009. In 2011, Simmons was named offensive coordinator at Middle Tennessee State as he was one of the youngest coordinators in the nation at only 30 years old. During that season, the Blue Raider offense led the Sun Belt in total offense and rushing offense, while ranking second in passing offense and scoring. Before being elevated to the role of offensive coordinator, Simmons served as running backs coach and passing game coordinator at MTSU from 2007 to 2010. In 2010, Simmons coached the three-headed backfield of Phillip Tanner, Benjamin Cunningham, and D.D. Kyles which helped the Blue Raiders produce one of the top rushing attacks in the country while combining for 21 touchdowns. All three averaged more than 4.5 yards a carry, and Tanner garnered All-Conference honors. Simmons had a real challenge in 2009 when Tanner went down with an injury in the second game of the season, leaving the Blue Raiders without an experienced running back. Simmons guided D.D. Kyles to a career year as the sophomore posted 857 yards on 139 carries (6.2 ypg average), scored three touchdowns, and had 14 receptions. Kyles, the team’s leading rusher down the stretch, had three straight 100-yard rushing games during the last half of the season. In 2008, Tanner had personal bests at the time in rushing yards, receptions, and touchdowns. Also under Simmons’ watch, Tanner earned National Player of the Week honors after setting a Sun Belt Conference and Blue Raider scoring record with six touchdowns in a win over North Texas. Under Simmons’ leadership in 2007, DeMarco McNair led the conference in touchdowns scored, and Tanner registered his first 100-yard rushing game with 144 yards on national television against Louisville. Simmons made his way to Murfreesboro, Tenn. in 2007 after one season on Tommy Bowden’s staff at Clemson, where he was a graduate assistant. Simmons worked with the offense while handling various other duties with the program as the team earned a spot in the 2006 Music City Bowl. Before joining Bowden’s staff, Simmons served as the quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator at Lincoln (FL) High School in 2005. Simmons, a native of Quincy, Fla., lettered three years as a quarterback at Clemson from 2000 to 2002 and passed for 2,530 yards and 16 touchdowns in 24 games. As a freshman, Simmons came off the bench for a hurt Woodrow Dantzler and threw for 228 yards and a record-tying four touchdowns in Clemson’s 38-24 win at North Carolina to earn ACC Rookie of the Week honors. Simmons played two years as a backup to Dantzler before becoming the starter in 2002. Following three years at Clemson in which he participated in four postseason bowl games, Simmons transferred to the Citadel in 2003 and earned First Team All-Southern Conference honors. A prep star at Shanks High School, Simmons threw for over 6,000 yards and 96 touchdowns during his brilliant career while also earning a 3.8 grade point average. Simmons, who was born on October 12, 1980, in Tallahassee, Fla., earned a degree in Sports Marketing from Clemson in 2002. He was the fastest football player to graduate at Clemson, accomplishing the milestone in three years. Simmons and his wife Shaia Rene, have two daughters, Raven, Shailoh and a son, Louis III.
