PRECISION RESISTOR’S MISSION STATEMENT

To continue a tradition ... with competitively priced, high quality, 100% USA producedcustom precision fixed wire wound resistors, sensors and shunts for critical applications

and to serve the needs of our customers who utilize these products.

BETTER FLEXIBILITY FORCUSTOM ENGINEERINGPRC's precision wire wounds areideal for short run developmentprojects as well as long productionruns that are needed in a hurry.Set-ups and tooling are easier toassemble than other resistor typesand specs can be quickly transferredfrom the model shop and laboratoryto the production floor.

BUY ONLY WHAT YOU NEED

LARGE SELECTION

Why buy 50 pieces or more, if all youneed are a few resistors for tests or adozen parts to complete yourrequirement? Small quantity lots orhigh volume production quantities areaccurately checked 100% to assurespecified limits and delivered

to meet critical schedules.

You can specify any resistancevalue or decimal part of an ohmfrom 0.001 to 10Megwith tolerances to ±0.005% andTCR's to 0±1 ppm/°C. Also, shownare temperature-sensitive resistorsand compensators to +6000 ppm/°C.as well as a complete line of four-terminal thru-hole and SMD precisionsub-miniature current shunts.

LOW VALUE/LOW TCRCOMBINATIONS

HIGH SURGE CURRENTHANDLING CAPABILITIES

COMMERCIALLY PURECOPPER TERMINALS

PRC's extremely low values to1 milliohm and TCR ±15 ppm/°C.provide better load-stability. Thismeans the quality to resist perma-nent change is designed into theparts from the start for dependableand repeatable measurementspiece-to-piece.

Many other resistor types on themarket require at least 2 or moreparts to equal the power andoverload capabilities of 1 PRCresistor. That's why the 3 and 5watt precision shunt valuesare so popular.

Why copper? Because of itsexcellent current carrying capacity. No material is better suited forprecision parts than commerciallypure copper. That is, oxygen-free,high conductivity, low resistivity,hot-tinned copper terminals. Hot-tinned rather than electro-tin platedterminals because they offerbetter wetting characteristicsand longer shelf life. Beware ofcopper clad or other materials that

have a strong magnetic attractionand exhibit a high EMF especiallywhen specifying low value preci-sion resistors. Another reasonengineers want commerciallypure copper is because of its lowresistivity.

All PRC resistors (especiallylow values) have low EMF (<0.3to 1.5 microvolts per deg. C.) withrespect to the copper terminals. Many low value tin oxide and othergeneral-purpose power resistors inthe industry have thermocoupleerrors as large as 100 microvoltsper deg. C., which degrade circuitperformance. Try to avoid thermalgradients that could cause a largetemperature difference across theresistor and specify resistors withlow EMF construction.

PRC's precision/power resistorsare the choice of engineers anddesigners because of their reason-able costs and time-proven heavy-duty service. Reliability anddependable quality year-after-yearare “the real value” of precisionwire wound resistors.

TOLERANCE, TCR & AMBIENTTEMPERATURE as One SpecThe TCR and temperature are also vitalfactors when specifying very accurateresistors and must be part of theequation.

is expressedas (±) plus or minus percent of thenominal value (ohms) required. (AllPRC resistors are calibrated and testedwithin specified limits at 25°C unlessotherwise noted.)

- We know there is no TCR(Temperature Coefficient of Resistance)without a change in temperature. Thatis, no proportional change in resistancewithout a change in the ambient orsome self-generated temperature shiftresulting from an excitation of power. This variation in resistance with respectto the change in temperature isexpressed in parts per million (ppm),Percent (%) or in ohms/ohm … per °C

The TCR for0±5ppm, also expressed as±0.000005 or ±0.0005%per degree C. as with all TCRsat PRC, is calculated between+25°C. and +100°C using theindustry standard formula onpage 9 … unless otherwisenoted. Therefore, a 10005ppm resistor is multiplied by0.000005 or 0.005change/°C

- is the measure of heator cold of an object or substance anddirectly related to the TCR andtolerance. Since the TCR char. is thevariation in resistance above or belowroom ambient (23°C or 25°C) or a spanthat includes both, it is essential withclose resistance tolerances and lowTCR requirements, to specify thetemperature span of operation and treatall the surrounding conditions affectingthe resistor as “one-spec.”

WHY’S STABILITY SO IMPORTANT?

EXTRA POWER … When You Need It!

LVS SHUNT is PRC's “crown jewel” forSURFACE MOUNT CURRENT SENSING

Stability is the quality to resistpermanent change, and must bedesigned into the parts from the start. Itis very difficult to stabilize or condition ageneral-purpose resistor and beconfident that it will meet a criticalapplication. All stability specs at PRCare designed for precise requirementseven if you specify ±1% resistancetolerances.

PRC's precision power resistors arenoted for the surge current handlingand overload capabilities. However, allcatalog ratings are based uponstandard ±1% resistance tolerances at+25°C or +125°C depending upon theresistor type. Derating is required forhigher temperatures and closertolerances. Please refer to the deratingcurves for each type resistor. Usually alarger part or a lower TCR will help, butheat is heat and must be carried off insome manner.

The LVS on page 6 as well as thePLV 4-lead version on page 7 areideal in voltage drop applications andfor accurate current-sensingrequirements … because of theirstability and flexibility. These uniqueparts not only offer lower values withcloser tolerances, but also lower TCR's(10ppm) … over a wider temperaturespan. The low TCR feature providesbetter thermal stability for moredependable measurements under loadconditions. In addition, PRC's shuntvalues provide low EMF with respect tothe tinned copper terminals. Thermaleffects, EMF and dissimilar metalsbecome part of the resistance readingsof low values. Specify low EMF and tryto avoid thermal gradients that couldcause a large temperature differenceacross a critical part. Obviously, themore information we have, the betterwe are able to match parts to yourspecifications.

PRC INTERESTING FACT

PRC OFFERS THESE FEATURES:

YOU CAN CUSTOM DESIGN YOUROWN LOW VALUE PRECISION SHUNT

One of the shunt values we tested wasa ten milliohm, 10-watt part (PLV10AL0.0 ±1%) that developed over 30amperes under full load. Because ofits aluminum oxide rectangular caseand special low TCR element, theresistance change (under load) wasless than ±0.1% … and there wasvirtually no measurable EMF.Now that is a breakthrough!

We certainly were impressed with theresults ... and we are confident we canhelp you in a similar manner.

1. Wide variety of shapes & sizes2. Measurable and predictable

voltage/temperature relationshippiece-to-piece.

3. Low value/close tolerancecombinations.

4. Low TCRs5. High temperature insulation.6. Single-joint 4-terminal construction

to eliminate lead-out and contactresistance.

7. Assorted diameters of pure copperleads for high current-carryingcapacities and lower resistance percircular mil foot.

That's right, you can design, test andfine-tune engineering samples so theyperform like a precision instrument. Trya few of our shunts today, becausemany of the popular values are in-stockfor immediate delivery. Better yet,if we don't have exactly what you needin stock, special engineering sampleswill be manufactured to your specsquickly … and at no cost!

THE PRC100 (Std. Reference):A PLATINUM ALTERNATIVE

CRITICAL FACT TO REMEMBER:

Like a platinum RTD, the PRC100Std. is 100 at 0°C. ±0.12%with a TCR of +3850 ppm/°C.that meets the theoretical curve ofplatinum as defined by the IECStandard, pub. 751 (per DIN Std.43760, Class B) alpha = 0.00385ohm/ohm/°C. Please refer to thechart and equations on Pg. 10.

Always use a consistent BaseTemperature of Zero (0)°C in theplatinum and PRC100 equations.

Ω

Ω

For example: The nominal resistanceof a platinum RTD and the PRC100Std. is 100 at Base 0°C. Then, if weuse +100°C as the other referencepoint, the TCR is calculated to bevery close to +3850 ppm/°CThe base temperature is importantin this situation because the TCRsof all other resistance alloys are

usually calculated between Base+25°C and +100°C. Any otherreference points and resistancevalues in the TCR equations willgive you a result other than theTCR expected.

Platinum is generally oered in twogrades: the Standard AmericanReference Grade of 0.003923ohm/ohm/°C and the DIN of0.003850 ohm/ohm/°C. We haveselected the DIN Standard forour PRC100 (Std. Reference) todemonstrate our capability andthe exibility of this design forcustom high quality special-purpose sensors.

The Standard 100 reference isoffered in an assortment ofphysical sizes for thru-hole, SMD,and probe applications. If you

THE PRC100 STD. REFERENCE SERIES IS IN STOCK & READILY AVAILABLE

Ω

need a few pieces or severalthousand of any of the PRC100configurations, we can usually shipthem directly from our stock.

If you do, the PRC100 CustomSeries is actually more versatilethan a platinum RTD, becauseyou can select any ohmic valueand tolerance that you need, andadjust the TCR characteristic ...if you want a slightly higher orlower ohms change per degree C.

Let us know your exact particularsand we will custom manufacture thepart to your specs and send you asample together with a computer-tracking chart at no charge.

You can select anyvalue from 50 to 5 Kilohms in tolerancesfrom 1/4 DIN (±0.03%) to 2 x DIN (±0.24%).

Rt is defined by IEC Standard, pub. 751:alpha = 0.00385 ohm/ohm/°C*

Rt = [1+At+Bt + C(t-100°C)t ]

Rt = (1+At+Bt )

A = 3.79782 x 10B = 6.502 x 10C = 4.3735 x 10

Fixed points are in degrees Celsius, = 0°CThe other (Ref.) temperature is + 100°C, butany temperature can be used in the equationwith respect to Base 0°C. The PRC100 Std.Ref. follows a well-defined theoreticalcurve and linear slope from Base 0°C provingthat most reference points are calculablewithin very close tolerances (Ratio = Rt/ ).

THERMAL TIME CONSTANT

All PRC100 sensors are closely matchedand repeatable part-to-part. They are ableto consistently reproduce output readingsconsecutively at the same temperaturereference points ... under the sameconditions and in the same direction.

The change in the original resistance ( )at 0° C after 10 cycles to +150°C is lessthan ±0.1°C or ±0.038% max. Shelf lifestability is ± 0.002%/yr. at 25°C (no load).

The PRC100 is ideal as a compensatorto offset drift or negative self-generatingchanges in resistance as a result of anexcitation of power to 0.25 watt at +125°Cto zero power at +150°C.

The time required for the PRC100 sensorto indicate 63.2% of a new impressedtemperature from a step change of 0°Cto +100°C can be customized to < 1 second
