The Opening Ceremony

Standing: MC Wayne Chai Chong, Treasurer CGA; Sitting: Peter Levy, General Manager BCIC; Asraph Ali, President CGA;

Peter Chin, President JGA; Trenton Weekes, Secretary CGA; Cesar Rivera, Tournament Coordinator CGA

The Opening ceremony commenced at 6:30pm on Tuesday July 3rd in the lush settings of the Gardens at Pegasus, with Mr. Wayne Chai Chong, Treasurer of the Caribbean Golf Association as the Master of Ceremonies. Speakers were introduced individually. Mr. Peter Chin, President of the Jamaica Golf Association, as part of his remarks, welcomed all players and supporters to the Caymanas Golf Club, the Pegasus and Jamaica in general and hoped that they have a wonderful and memorable time in the country. Along with his welcoming remarks, Mr. Asraph Ali, President of the Caribbean Golf Association, thanked all of the contributors to the CAJGC, especially the parents. He implored the players to provide keen competition, make new friends, renew old ones and most of all enjoy the hospitality that Jamaica has to offer. Mr. Peter Levy, General Manager, BCIC and major sponsor of the event, in his remarks, proceeded to give a brief background of his company, the reasons for partnering with golf and extending a warm welcome to all golfers and supporters. He also presented the sponsor’s cheque to the Mr. Peter Chin who took the opportunity to thank Mr. Levy and BCIC for their generous support of the Championships.

The vote of thanks was made by Mr. Wayne Chai Chong, followed by a presentation of gifts to members of the CGA Council. Unfortunately Hon. Olivia Grange, MP, Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport, who would have presented the main address was unable to attend. A brief presentation was made by Alison Reid on her experiences to-date in organizing the CAJGC event; a cocktail function followed immediately after.

Course Setup

On arriving at the course for the first time, it was observed that work was already done by the local team lead by John Smith to mark out-of-bounds, hazards and some areas of ground under repair. Secondly, work by Cesar Rivera, Trenton Weekes and David McNulty on July 2nd and 3rd focused on marking the pin positions for the three days of competition and ensuring that teeing grounds were appropriately identified for the various age groups. A thorough walk-through of all eighteen holes was done subsequently to confirm that the course was fully prepared and ready for three days of competition.

The Course

A meeting was held with Wayne Chai Chong, David McNulty, Cesar Rivera and Trenton Weekes to reconfirm the recommendations made earlier on how the Championships would be conducted. Caymanas was fortunate to benefit from a few showers the week prior which enhanced the appearance and conditions through the green. It was generally concluded by the tournament committee that the course was in great shape and ready to undertake the challenges of the competition over the three days. The tee and distance allocations were as follows and are in yards; the course is Par 72.

Age Group (Boys) Tee Boys Age Group (Girls) Tee Girls

18 & Under Blue 6720 18 & Under White 6223

15 & Under White 6223 15 & Under Yellow 5650

11 – 13 Yellow 5650 11 - 13 Red 5502

It was determined that a two-tee start would be deployed commencing at 8:30am on the first two days and at 8:00am on the final day. It was also concluded that players be seeded after the first round.

Facilities Breakfast at the hotel location was well organized and very adequate for all competitors and followers; for those leaving very early, breakfast was also available at the clubhouse. Lunch was also provided for the players at the clubhouse with similar arrangements made for dinner at the hotel.

The transportation system to and from the course was also well organized with the

benefit of police escorts at times; the duration of the trip ranged from 30 to 40 minutes

depending on the time of day.

The tournament office was well appointed with a wi-fi service and equipment to

supplement the scoring and reporting operations. Rules officials were Cesar Rivera,

Trenton Weekes, David McNulty and David Mais.

Tournament Office

The adjacent polo field was used as a driving range with a very adequate supply of balls, refreshments and transportation from and to the clubhouse. A practice putting and chipping green adjacent to the 18th hole was available throughout the Championships. A large scoreboard was also mounted and manned at the back of the 9th green. The

volunteer efforts were very noticeable on and off the course, they must be commended

for a job well done to ensure that all tasks are complete and facilities are in place. A

number of sponsors implanted their banners around the course and in the vicinity of the

clubhouse.

Excellent elevated bleacher spaces were available at finishing holes.

The Championships A shotgun practice round was organized for all teams for 9:00am on July 3rd followed by a photo session at the hotel and opening ceremony.

The competition started on July 4th with an 8:30am start on the 1st and 10th tees; the last tee time was 10:50am for the first two days. Starters were provided at each tee area to ensure prompt time-management of players throughout the morning period.

The progression of competitors throughout the day went well with some degree of marshaling from time to time. Our biggest challenge with slow play was in the 11 – 13 age groups, understandably so. Final groups came in around 3:30pm. Some 86 players faced the starters, 52 boys and 34 girls from 8 CGA member countries. Unfortunately, hurricane-ravaged USVI could not field a team this year; we take this opportunity on behalf of the entire CGA family to wish them well during their recovery.

Tournament Management The GHIN TPP was used throughout to record the names and countries of players, gender and age, produce the draw and print score cards for each day. It was also used to capture hole by hole scores for each player, provide individual reports and generate course and player statistics. Separate spreadsheets were used to calculate team totals for the Hank James Trophy. Trenton Weekes, Wayne Chai Chong, Julia Vaz, David McNulty and local volunteers combined their efforts to enter and check individual scores into the TPP and ensure that draws, team and individual scores were distributed to coaches/managers, tournament officials, member countries, the press and other interested parties in a timely manner.

The scoring tent was also well managed and controlled to ensure that players followed the procedures and checks before they handed in their scorecards. Crosschecks between live scoring, the scoring tent and the TPP were done to ensure the integrity of results being distributed to all points.

Hank James Trophy Results

Special Mention The Puerto Team must be highly commended on winning the Hank James Trophy once again, having just recovered from two horrific hurricanes during the late summer of 2017. At some stage during the past year, courses were unplayable, access to various venues difficult and priorities were set in areas other than golf. We congratulate the golf team, the management

and the Association in preparing the winning team. The CGA President in his welcoming remarks at the Opening Ceremony also lauded the effort of the Puerto Rico management to field a team despite the several setbacks from the ravages of the most recent hurricanes.
