Tea Session

On 21st January, KMBC held our tea session. It was organised as part of the orientation for both new and existing parents. Parents were introduced to the centre’s programmes and provides an overview of the curriculum. Parent Support Group (PSG) welcomed new members and the enrichment vendors had their booths set up on that day for parents who wanted to know more about the enrichment programmes.

We welcomed the year of the rooster with a celebration. Parents were involved in creating Chinese lanterns using recycled materials. Various types of games were prepared for the children. Children enthusiastically participated in exciting games such as the Chopstick Game, Spring Roll Making and many more. This is to encourage diverse culture spirit among the different races. The children were delighted to receive their ‘hongbao’ at the end of the celebration. Page 2

N2 to K2 children had their learning journey to the Health Zone, in line with the theme “Myself”. The children learnt about senses, body parts, healthy food and health. They explored and enjoyed different activities like rock climbing, soccer, tug-of-war, cycling, etc. It was indeed a great experience for the children.

The KMBC celebrated “Care for our Friends Day” on 6th March 2017. Exciting activities were planned for the children like; Push and Pull Race, Hula Hoop Chain, Three Legged Race and Tug of War. After each game, the children were able to point out the learning points that they can gather from the games such as cooperation, being gentle, turn takings and sharing among friends. For the finale, they sang and danced to the friendship song. In the afternoon, the children did art and craft activities related to the theme “friendship”.

Water

Week

Everybody was geared up in their beach sarongs for the MERCU Mania 2017. All staff were excited for the annual sports event which was held at Pasir Ris Beach. Various types of games were prepared. There were 10 stations with varied activities for each station. Each team must earn as many points as possible. We enjoyed kite flying, bowling, archery, frisbee and many more. At the 10th station every team did their own cheer. Even though it was a hot and wet weather, it did not deter us to have fun which enhanced the bonding among us. At the end of the day, everyone had a sumptuous lunch and went home with a wide grin plastered on their faces. Till next year again!

We did a project on the theme “Water” during the March school holidays. It is an annual project week campaign to encourage children to save water. Each class learnt the different uses of water and ways on saving them. The children also created crafts related to the topic. It was heartening to see our children learning to value and save natural resources at such a young age.

Our N2 children learnt to express their feelings through Art and Craft. We introduced different colours that represent different emotions. For instance, red represents anger and blue for sadness. They had the freedom to choose the colours they preferred and created their own masterpieces. The children were very interactive during the activity and were sharing with their peers on what their art pieces were all about.

As part of the Cultural Week, the children had a dramatization play about the Chinese Zodiac. Each of them represented an animal sign in the lunar calendar. This enhanced their understanding on the culture, traditions and beliefs of the Chinese.

During learning corner time, some children chose to play with the puzzles. This activity enhances their analytical and problem solving skills.

Children’s mathematical understanding were reinforced as they matched the counters to the given number symbols by using linking cubes as the counters. This activity develops their counting skills using one to one correspondence.

The children learnt to read recipe and followed the instructions as they made fruit salad using apples, pears, watermelons, pineapples and dragon fruits.

They learnt to slice the fruits into small pieces using plastic knives. Followed by adding the mayonnaise and mixed it with the fruits.

Parental Tips

Play with your child. Play is your child’s language. Take delight in playing with your child.

When parents play with their children, it helps their self-esteem.

Allow your children to do things for themselves.

This will give them the sense of independence and helps them to

understand that making mistakes is alright.

Set limits for your child. You do not have to be the

parent that say yes to everything. Setting limits will

teach them responsibility.

Read to your child. You can read to them at bedtime as your night routine. Let them choose the storybook. Reading

together will create a bond between you and your child.

Make time for yourself. Spend time doing things that you find fun and fulfilling. Add a little time for yourself. This will make

you happy. And what children need most are happy parents.

What’s New

Apart from SSDB, the centre will also be involved in the Innovation Guidance Project (IGP). With the theme of “Simple Machines” teachers will also undergo training conducted by Science Centre to learn to plan and conduct lessons to encourage the K1 and K2 children to explore and create tools using everyday objects. Looking forward to their active participation in this project!

“Start Small Dream Big (SSDB)” is an initiative from ECDA which started in 2015 to encourage pre-schools to create authentic platforms for children to innovate, problem-solve and tap on their unique strengths to help others. It was first launched in 2015 as part of SG50 and the 15th anniversary of President's Challenge, an annual series of fund-raising and volunteer activities. It is also our 2nd year being involved in SSBD this year. With the theme of “A Garden in Every Preschool”, the K1 and K2 children will be embarking on a garden based project in the upcoming months!
