Concept 1: Stereotype

Definition : Stereotype is a well known idea or image of a person that is held by a

number of people. These idea or image may or may not accurately reflect reality. For example, we will judges a person by looks, like, race, gender, sexuality, and other superficial reasons.

In the video

Erica and Shze Hwa felt lucky and excited when they knew that they were same group with Joel. This is

because they heard that Joel is a smart, hardworking and capable student although they had not been

work with him before. They stereotype the characteristic of Joel.

In the video

During the group discussion, since Erica and Shze Hwa were stereotyping the characteristic of Joel. They

treated him good and agreed his suggestion and arrangement because they think that what Joel said was

always right. However, as for Nigel, he had bad impression on Joel, that’s why he disagree everything he

said.

Concept 2: Attitude Formation-Explicit Attitudes

Definition : Explicit attitudes are attitudes that are at the concious level are delibrately formed and are

easy to self report. These are known to the subject and can be observed by an outsider, self- reporting and obeservator are two most common methods to determine explicit attitudes.

Definition : Confirmation Bias is a type of cognitive bias that involves favoring information that confirms our beliefs. We like to imagine that our belief are rational, logical, and objective. We will pay attention to the information that support our ideas and ignoring the information that challenges our existing beliefs.It impact how people gather information.

In the video

Nigel dislike Joel and he thinks that Joel was not that good as what others said. Nigel decided to find the

evidence to prove his hypothesis. One day, when Nigel returned back from toilet, he was curious that

what Joel was doing so he opens the door carefully and he found out that Joel was actually playing his

hand phone game while others group members were doing the work. Nigel finally found the evidence to

prove his hypothesis and he decided to tell the others group member about what he had saw.

Definition : Social Loafing is the phenomenon of people exerting less effort to achieve a goal when they work in a group than when they work alone. But in some groups there is a tendency on the part of participants to contribute less to the group's goal than if they were doing the same task themselves .

In the video

Erica and Shze Hwa had been absent for a few days. They didn’t attend the group meeting. Joel felt that

they were lazy and irresponsible. Joel was disappointed and felt that Erica and Shze Hwa were

contributed less effort in this group work when compared to him and Nigel.

Definition : Ingratiation happens when we try to get others to like us with flattery, praise, and just generally trying to be likeable. People will like others who treat them good and admire them. But, if the person realizes that we being ingratiating to them, they might react with disappointment.

In the video

The group ingratiate themselves to the lecturer in order to get a higher mark by flattering. They brought

food and drinks to the lecturer during the tutorial section and hope that it will help them to create a good

first impression to the lecturer. At last, Joel’s group got A- for their ENBE final project.
