Rockstone Bike Alley was founded over eight years ago in 2005 by Rockford Copeland.

Initially it began after planning to take his daughters out on a cycling trip.

Many of the children in the neighbourhood wanted to come also.

He agreed to take them – and many of the youngsters returned with no bikes of there own.

He began collecting old frames and bike parts. He asked parents and neighbours, to leave any spare parts they had outside his home.
He turned his garage into workshopwith tools and equipment and started repairing bikes.

Began teaching young people to learn how to repair their own bikes.

Began the “Postcode rides” for youths in rival areas – started to engage them.

Started Engaged with the young people, & a number of young riders who excelled as cyclists.

Took part in various 10 km rides, including the London to Brighton ride.

The Rockstone Cycling Club was formed.

The plan was :To continue Rockstone Bike Alley as a repair and maintenance workshopThis money would support the cycling club and the activities with the young people

In addition the cycling project’s remit began to expand:
•The young people often sought his counsel speaking to him about personal and family problems they were having – in effect they began to receiving counselling support.
•Also Rockford observed that regular cycling greatly improved their physical fitness and well being – especially those who attended to London to Brighton ride.

Other people noticed Rockford’s excellent work & A small team was identified:Volunteer parents/helpersA pair of doctorsA learning mentorA psychiatric nurseA sports scientist

The cycling club soon received the attention of the local authoritiesThey recognised the work that was being done and offered to involve us in a number of projects. These parties include the NHS, Haringey council and the youth service

We have been involved in:Summer on the green – a community based project developed to utilise local green space and provide activities for young people.The Affinity well being project – a holistic health project, of which cycling activities were being provided10 week Octagon project – a pupil referral unit project teaching young people to fix and repair bikes

The original message stayed the same, but the dynamic had totally changed. It was deemed necessary to expand the project even further.
Eventually this led to the Registration of the Rockstone Foundation.

Bikeability and cycle instruction to NHS staff members who either:
•Are considering to purchase a bike in order to ride to work.
•NHS staff members who want to ride to improve their fitness –especially those who work long shifts & don’t exercise regularly.
•Those who own a bike but like the confidence and/or experience to cycle to work to and from home.

Cycling health and complementary therapies service
•To provide cycling related activities for the mental health clients/service users at the trust for in patients and those in the community.
•To provide an exercise referral service for GPs to send their patients to maintain their physical well-being and help with long term conditions such as i – diabetes ii - obesity iii - hypertension
•A specialist service for those regular cyclists who may have injuries but need assistance with rehab and therapy.

Special mental health and substance misuse service.
A specialist bike repair programme aimed at motivating and maintaining the well-being of those service users who have an interest in bikes with a view to “keeping them well and occupied”
Research centre
A specialised team looking into the impact and benefits of cycling on the local community and nation at large from a medical and health perspective.
