Director’s message

As we move into the new decade, GVBL enters its 20th year in existence. Seems not so long ago we organized sixty 5th and 6th grade girls to play on the carpeted floor in the upper gym at GWES. The reason we were playing in the little carpeted gym? No gym space. Fast forward to 2020 and what are we trying to accomplish with our capital campaign to build a new GVCO Community Center? To create more space, because, 20 years later…there’s no gym space!

GVCO has been working for numerous years to get to the point we have reached today. GVCO owns the ground and has completed all regulatory approvals. We are at the cusp of securing the necessary financing from the bank and raising a building out of the ground. Creating the recreational/communal space that is very much needed for our wonderful community to continue to thrive: the necessary facilities for entire families from preschoolers, students, young adults, to older adults and seniors to enjoy.

We need to cross the finish line. We have raised an incredible 70% of the monies needed to move forward with the multi-million dollar facility. Our current GVBL Center lease is up in 18 months and is going away as the owner is renovating the property. We have signed a Land Development Agreement with the township and we now have a deadline to finish the project. We are so, so close.

We need every family in the community to help. It is a “Community Center” so it will belong to the entire community. We need everyone in the community to give something. For instance, there were roughly 700 families participating in the GVBL winter league this year. If everyone donated $1000 we would exceed our goal (there are some that can only afford $100, but could be offset by those who can afford $1900…which could be pledged over multiple years). Monies given for an asset that will be here to use for decades to come. A community asset for all ages to utilize and experience for healthier, happy lives.

Once again thank you all for your continued support to our Great Valley community.

Tom Curran, GVCO DirectorKeith Walsh, GVCO Executive Director

In memory of James McKay, The Chester County Challenge has now become the James McKay Memorial Tournament.

James loved basketball. He played his whole life – from his childhood until just after his diagnosis with cancer in 2016. Some of his favorite moments as a player were captaining his Varsity team at Conestoga in 1983, being named Narberth Summer League MVP in 1987, and being part of the Norristown Men’s League for over 20 years and YMCA lunch league for 15 years.

But James’ very best basketball moments came from coaching his sons, Nathanael and Seth, and dozens of other boys at GVBL for almost 10 years. James watched his boys make friends, challenge themselves, and grow as athletes and people on the courts at GVBL. And the dozens of boys James coached over the years just loved him. Coach McKay always encouraged, but never yelled. He celebrated their successes and helped them push through struggles and defeat. He laughed with them and supported them and always put them first. In sharing his love of basketball, James touched many lives and we are lucky to have known him.
