Director’s messageAs we wrap up our 18th GVBL winter league season, it’s been another phenomenal year of basketball. Over 900 Great Valley kids played in the league this year, including 60+ four and five year old Jr. Hoopsters, all the way up to 120+ boys in our high school division. Our 1st/2nd grade Round Robin was a fantastic day, culminating a fabulous season. Of course the double elimination playoffs, creating some tears, but far more laughs and smiles, was terrific, and has brought us to tonight’s annual event to celebrate it all. Just like the first season back in 2001, it was once again a tremendous success because of the people that make up our wonderful Great Valley Basketball League. The kids are passionate, the coaches and other volunteers are invaluable and the fans are often inspiringly fanatical!

When I am asked to write this short message each year I often think back through all the years, and all of the incredible people that I have met through this organization. I have coached a lot of them and they are turning out to be great young men and women. Many of the adults I have met I now call good friends. A good deal of these people share the same passion for basketball and community.

Year after year, our GVBL season produces excitement, enthusiasm and enjoyment. But more importantly it produces new friendships. Every season new bonds are formed with new friends and teammates and a new coaching fraternity is created. Parents sit in the bleachers meeting new neighbors and community members. The GVBL Center creates an enormous sense of community.

In February, GVCO turned another page in its never ending pursuit to deliver a new community center to the Great Valley community by taking ownership of 7 acres on Bacton Hill Rd. A huge milestone which will lead to the next step in the process - a final fundraising push to attain the necessary funding allowing us to secure the bank financing to construct the new center. GVCO’s goal remains steadfast and will continue to be persistent.

Of course we need the entire community’s help, and we thank all those who have gotten us to the point we are today. We will keep “knocking on doors” asking for the support of the entire community. We are optimistic that the support will be achieved because the “story” is compelling and the community is smart enough to understand how important a facility like this is for our future…and there are simply just too many great people willing to help.

In memory of James McKay, The Chester County Challenge has now become the James McKay Memorial Tournament.

James loved basketball. He played his whole life – from his childhood until just after his diagnosis with cancer in 2016. Some of his favorite moments as a player were captaining his Varsity team at Conestoga in 1983, being named Narberth Summer League MVP in 1987, and being part of the Norristown Men’s League for over 20 years and YMCA lunch league for 15 years.

But James’ very best basketball moments came from coaching his sons, Nathanael and Seth, and dozens of other boys at GVBL for almost 10 years. James watched his boys make friends, challenge themselves, and grow as athletes and people on the courts at GVBL. And the dozens of boys James coached over the years just loved him. Coach McKay always encouraged, but never yelled. He celebrated their successes and helped them push through struggles and defeat. He laughed with them and supported them and always put them first. In sharing his love of basketball, James touched many lives and we are lucky to have known him.

AUCTION RULES 1. All Silent Auction items have bid sheets. Beginning bids are listed on

each sheet. To bid on an item, write your bid number and the amount of your bid.

2. All bids must be in whole dollars. BIDS WILL BE DISQUALIFIED IF THE MINIMUM RAISE IS NOT MET.

3. The highest bid posted is the winning bid.

4. All sales are final. No refunds. Please read carefully all specifications and limitations on each item. All auction purchases are sold “as is”, and neither GVCO/GVBL nor the donors make any warranties or representations of any kind with respect to the property. Neither GVCO/GVBL nor the donors are responsible for any personal injuries or damages to property resulting from the utilization of property or services sold. Buyers waive any claims for liability against either GVCO/GVBL or the donors.

5. Unless otherwise specified, all auction items and services must be used before March 6, 2017. Unless specified, arrange dates and times at the mutual convenience of the donor and buyer.

6. In the event of a dispute, the auction committee has sole and final discretion to determine the winning bid.

7. Payment in full is required tonight via, cash, check, Visa, Discover, American Express and MasterCard.

8. All fair market values for silent auction items are posted the evening of the benefit. GVCO/GVBL lists the fair market value as established by the generous donors, and prices are accurate to the best of the auction committee’s knowledge.

9. If an item is still being bid upon when the silent auction closes, and the bidders have remained at the bid sheet, a mediator will take the bid sheet and continue the bidding until the highest bid is reached (please see below for information about the mediation process).

Mediation of Silent Auction Items You will need a mediator if you find yourself in a “bidding war” with someone else. If you really want a specific item and you and your competitor are placing your bids one after the other, you must stand by the bid sheet when the auction closes and request a mediator. At this time, both of you will begin a mini “live auction” with the mediator as your moderator. The mediator will start with the person whose bid would have next if the bid sheets were still in place. If you are that individual you will be asked to verbally increase your bid in front of your competitor. The mediator will then ask the other to increase his/her bid by at least the increments that were originally in place. This process continues until someone stops increasing the bid. The mediator will then write the winning bidder’s number on the sheet and turn it into the bank. Mediators will be identified on their name tag.
