Scott Henderson (Bachelor of Science, Master of Arts - Psychology)
Scott is a registered psychologist with a solid background as an educator. He has worked as a lecturer in psychology, behavioural science and research at the Universities of Sydney and Western Sydney. Lecturing for 6 years at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, Scott specialised in the disciplines of health and social psychology. His expertise includes such areas as leadership, teams and group dynamics, communication and body language, persuasion techniques, stress, and workplace satisfaction.
Since 1999, his work in the corporate sector has spanned the spectrum from industrial
psychologist to corporate trainer. In 2004 he became a certified Master Coach in
Behavioural Coaching and continues to coach both individuals and teams at all levels within
the companies with which he works.
His unique perspective of inter- and intra-personal understanding complements the delivery
of his training programs and ensures a rigorous and scientific approach to each participant’s
growth and development. As Director of Training at BSI Training & Development, Scott has
delivered training throughout Australia and New Zealand including courses in Customer
Service, Team Building and Team Integration, Communication, Leadership and
Management, Performance Management, Coaching, Conflict Resolution, Sales and Business
Development, Time Management, Life Balance, Interpersonal Skills and Professional
Presentation Skills.
Scott has a reputation of being a lively and entertaining speaker, and his ability of relating to
a wide range of people has been further honed by his work as a psychologist and counsellor.
However his greatest loves have always been teaching and training. Additionally Scott
continues to work hard to dispel the stereotype that psychologists actually get people to lie
down on couches!
OUR PRESENTER
As leaders and managers, we all have something to learn and ways to develop. We owe it to our team to ensure that we are not passing on bad habits or ineffective techniques. We all want the most out of our teams and good management is essential to this goal. For upcoming managers, it’s best to learn the proven tools and techniques from the outset. Your organisation is no place for management trial and error. This seminar gives you the essential tools,
management techniques, and strategies for getting
the most out of your team.
This one day seminar is an essential training day for anyone with responsibility for managing or supervising people. That’s everyone from existing directors and managers to team members responsible for other employees. A recent Harvard Business Review study found that managers first get leadership training 10 years after they began supervising people. The obvious problem with this is that:
Practising without training ingrains bad habits;
Practice makes perfect only if you are doing
it right in the first place; and
Your team members are practising on the job regardless of whether you have trained them or
not.
Best practice performance reviews & appraisals You know you have to do a performance review of team members so why not make it count?
What your performance review and appraisal should cover Preparing for the meeting Maintaining control of the appraisal and performance management process Building your confidence in your performance appraisal and what to document Evaluating the results Common problems in the appraisal process What now? The essential follow up actions Creating meaningful performance objectives – make sure what you’re asking for
can be achieved and measured Setting clear, well defined goals that everyone can agree to
Giving feedback Most of us are seriously bad at giving feedback. The performance appraisal is not the only time to be truly honest with team members. We show you the techniques for making what you say relevant and effective.
Managing excuses for why things are not happening Having practical performance conversations - overcoming fault and blame Why all feedback is constructive (not just corrective) How to receive feedback objectively Overcoming resistance and selling the need for behavioural change The essential follow up process
“Leadership and learning are indispensable to each other.“
John F. Kennedy (1917-1963);
35th US President
Ongoing development - getting the most out of your team
Recognising the developmental levels of each staff member Leveraging diversity and building intrinsic motivation The 12 Step Delegation Process – how to let go and avoid dumping Choosing the appropriate staff member to delegate to – building trust Driving responsibility and accountability Getting staff to show initiative – creating a supportive culture Making delegation attractive to the delegate Moving your team beyond their comfort zone Using coaching as a tool for accelerated development Building technical skills and motivation in staff members Informal coaching - when and where to coach Dealing with non-work related issues Why people don’t think they can do better - addressing distorted thinking and self-
limiting beliefs
Beyond the appraisal - managing poor performance Managing performance is more than a once a year piece of paper.
Why people don’t do what they are supposed to and what to do about it Where does responsibility for performance issues in your firm lie? Managing expectations – why people expect you to thank them for turning up Signs that a performance problem is developing You’re still not listening! Dealing with performance deviation When to address poor performance -why it won’t go away on its own

Effective leaders need to
create a sustainable
leadership culture so that
their leadership
requirements are
understood, that they matter
and that they last. In this
manner the tasks being
addressed are a shared
responsibility among the
team, which is increasingly
important in today’s complex
business environment.
