Assignment Summary For this assignment, I decided to focus on giving advice on how to own and take care of bunnies. Most people assume that owning a pet rabbit would take less effort than taking care of cats or dogs, but this is not always the case. In this project, I decided to give advice to younger kids, my sister and older first time bunny owners. Many children and even adults find rabbits attractive and cute, however kids are more unaware of the responsibilities the come with owning a pet bunny. When I was younger I begged my parents to get me a rabbit promising to always took care of them. But, within the first few weeks, I did stopped paying attention to them. As an adult, I look back at my younger self with regret. I was ignorant of the responsibilities of being a pet owner and would like to prevent anyone from making the same mistakes I did. The genre that I used for the younger audience is a comic strip because it was the most approachable and familiar device that can be used for kids. Also, comics have pictures which catches the children’s attention and allows for a simpler and cuter media. I took a bit of a more informal approach when it came to my sister because there are times when the audience being addressed is a person close to the writer and a less formal approach would best suit the situation. Choosing to write an email allows for versatility in the tone and diction of the writer, me, in respect to the audience, my sister. Plus the length was appropriate for an email rather than a text. My third audience are a group of novice bunny owners or older audiences interested in owning a pet rabbit. These people are the perfect audience to give advice on because they lack experience and need to be aware of the responsibilities that come with taking care of specific animals, in this case bunnies. The brief and simple Powerpoint is a mode that most adults or young adults are familiar with so following a powerpoint presentation would be easy and effortless.

Assignment Summary

For this assignment, I decided to focus on giving advice on how to own and take care of bunnies.

Hey little sister,

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!! How are you? How’s your first year of college? I’m sorry I haven’t been able to return your letters. I’ve been a bit busy these past few weeks. I had a midterm each week this past three weeks. I finally finished my first wave of exams so I have a bit of time to write to you. Nicole told me that you were planning on adopting a bunny from the shelter and wanted my advise. Personally, I think it’s a great idea. Rabbits are the cutest! I hope you’re ready for the responsibility that comes with being a new owner. My advice for you is to do your research. Before you even get a bunny, make sure that you are willing to take care of it for years. Owning one is a long term commitment their average lifespan can be anywhere between eight to twelve years. Guess you can grow old with them. Ha. Contrary to what a lot of people think, having a bunny is not easy. They are sociable animals and isolating them in a small corner can cause them stress and make them depressed. Do you plan on buying one or two bunnies? However many you decide, make sure that they are in an open enough environment where they can see some human interactions. If you plan to only have one, then I suggest that you commit part of your daily time with you new pet. Just because you watched Bugs Bunny as a kid does not mean that you know what’s in their diet. Most of a bunny’s diet is based on fiber. So DO NOT forget to feed them a lot of green fibrous plants like fresh hay. Also only feed them carrots and high sugared food occasionally. I am very excited that you decided to take care of a bunny. I am not gonna lie. It is going to be tough having to take care of your own pet but it will be worth it. They’ll never fail to brighten your day and are the best stress relievers. Can you just imagine seeing a cute bunny rabbit hopping around your new apartment whenever you come home from school? It the most adorable thing in the world. Best of luck lil sis! Missing you always!

Your bunny loving older sister,Tasha Mariano

P.S. Did you know that you can use the word bunnies and rabbits interchangeably?

UWP 1, Fall 2016

Assignment 2: Advice for Multiple Audiences

Time Line: Day 6: Assignment introduced Day 11: Draft Workshop: upload two of your advice pieces to Canvas by 4:10 PM Day 12: (10/31): Revision of Assignment 2 and Reflection Memo (250-300 words, see p.

4) due to Canvas by 4:10 PM Draft 2 returned with comments (see feedback rubric, p. 3) no later than one week after the submission deadline. Purpose: The Advice for Multiple Audiences assignment connects to the UWP1 learning outcomes of applying key rhetorical concepts and using composing for learning and communicating. The purpose of this assignment is to learn more about how the same message is conveyed differently depending on the piece’s audience and genre. Topic: For the Advice for Multiple Audiences assignment you’ll provide advice on a topic of your choice to three different audiences, each using a different genre to communicate your message (i.e. a print article, a newspaper article, a brochure, a letter, a memo, an e-mail, a website, a blog, a video, a podcast, a PowerPoint, etc.) By imparting the same advice to three different audiences using different genres, you’ll be able to demonstrate your audience awareness and rhetorical analysis abilities. Length: In total, Assignment 2 should be 1,100-1,200 words long, or the equivalent to that length (see Format instructions). It will include:

• Assignment Summary: 200-300 words • Advice Piece #1: approximately 300 words or the equivalent • Advice Piece #2: approximately 300 words or the equivalent • Advice Piece #3: approximately 300 words or the equivalent

You will also produce a separate reflection memo of 250-300 words (see attachment on pg. 4 for instructions). Audience: You will determine the audience for each of your pieces; in your Assignment Summary, you’ll explain why you chose to give advice to that particular audience using the genre you did. (For example, why did you make the choice to write an e-mail to the program director? Why are they the appropriate person to give advice to on this topic?) Format: The format of each piece will depend on the mode and genre. For this project, you might compose a print article, a brochure, a letter, a website, a blog, a video, a PowerPoint, etc. Each of these genres will have different formatting conventions. The length of an advice piece depends on the purpose, but the length should be enough to

2

provide solid advice but short enough that readers won’t feel overwhelmed, so we’ll aim for 300 words for each piece. For those that are non-print like videos or websites, there may be fewer words but the length should be equivalent (for examples, 2-4 minutes of audio or video or the equivalent of 4-6 pages of images and words for a website or brochure with multiple images). If you decide to cite any of the articles we read for this unit, you can use whatever citation style you’d like. The citation style of the American Psychological Association (APA) is commonly used in college social sciences class, and the citation style of the Modern Language Association (MLA) is commonly used in college humanities classes, so either one of these styles would be appropriate. Genre: Advice articles are a common genre, and you’ll find them on every topic, from choosing colleges to fashion to exercise to technology to financial planning to how to write successfully in college. Advice articles can be in print mode, digital mode, or audio mode. You’ll want to consider your audience and aim for a tone and style that will appeal to them. Often advice articles will be written in a form that makes it easier for the reader to take in the advice and information: for example, by using headings, bold and italics, bullets, numbering, text boxes, etc. Sometimes advice articles cite other sources, but you’re not required to do any research and cite secondary sources for this project. However, you’re welcome to cite the articles we’re reading for this unit, and you’re also welcome to provide web links to additional resources. Evaluation: This assignment is one that you may choose to include in your final portfolio. You will receive peer feedback on your first draft and written teacher feedback on your second draft and will have opportunities later in the term to discuss further revisions with your instructor and classmates. See the next page for feedback/evaluation criteria for this assignment.

Assignment 2: Advice to Multiple Audiences Due: Submit to Canvas Assignments. Grading: You will receive full credit for a thoughtful, thorough, well written response. If your memo is late, poorly done, or missing, you will lose up to 25 points on your final portfolio grade. Format/Specifications: Write this as a short essay with several well developed paragraphs. It should be 250-300 words long (longer is OK), double-spaced. Begin with your name, word count, and a descriptive title. It should also be spell-checked, proofread, and edited. Task: For Assignment 2, you identified a problem you wanted to discuss with a specific audience. In your reflection memo, you should discuss the process you went through to write this paper. You may find the following questions helpful. Do not feel that you need to answer all of them or in this particular order, and you may add other ideas not covered below.

v In your thinking/idea-generating process, what came first: the audience or the advice that you’d give?

v Did any ideas from Carroll’s article on rhetorical analysis or Dirk’s article on genre particularly help you? If so, which one(s)? (You should feel free to add key quotations if you like. Be sure to include the page numbers.)

v What did you find most interesting about this assignment? v What was most difficult or frustrating about it? v At this stage of development, how do you feel about this assignment? Do you

think you might include it in your final portfolio? If not, why not? If so, what work might still be needed (in your opinion)?
