2014 PMI Scheduling Conference#1Learning ObjectivesLearn a new way of capturing project scheduling information

Gain an awareness of the implications of product libraries for BIM

Develop a strategy for integrating project information from a variety of sources12014 PMI Scheduling Conferencewww.PMI.org(AEC - Case study)#Overview of ConceptsA Building Information Model (BIM) is a digital representation of the functional and physical attributes of a facility.22014 PMI Scheduling Conferencewww.PMI.orgBuilding Specifications are written descriptions of the quality of the built product and its component products (NBS, 2011)

A Building Information Model (BIM) is a digital representation of the functional and physical attributes of a facility.(NIBS, 2007).Physical attribute: E.g.: Basic, concrete wall, with structural insulation Panel, with Kiln Dried Timber Panel Rainscreen.Functional attributes: E.g.: Functions as a host for: doors, windows, paints, etc.

Building Specifications are written descriptions of the quality of the built product and its component products (NBS, 2011).Product descriptionQuality description#Establishing the connectionsThe I in BIM establishes the relationship between BIM models and specifications.32014 PMI Scheduling Conferencewww.PMI.orgGlass and glazing materialsGlass: Free from defects which detract from appearance or interfere with performance under normal conditions of use.Glazing plastics: Free from surface abrasions, and warranted by the manufacturer for 10 years against yellowing or other colour change, loss of strength and impact resistance, and general deterioration.

Several requirements of BIM objects can be derived from specifications e.g.: component attributes, quality requirements, schedules, etcGlass and glazing materialsGlass: Free from defects which detract from appearance or interfere with performance uGlass and glazing materialsGlass: =The I in BIM establishes the relationship between BIM & specifications.

Several requirements of BIM objects can be derived from specifications e.g.: component attributes, quality requirements, schedules, etc

=Specification data, e.g. Schedules, are essential to BIM information#Augmenting SchedulesSchedules in BIM can be considered in terms of:

SpecificationsThe maximum size of coarse aggregate shall not be less than otherwise specified.Aggregates shall comply with B.S. 882 and shall be free from elongated particles, dust, clay films and other adherent materials. They shall not contain clay lumps exceeding 1% by weight and foundations shall not contain more than 3% by weight of silt.In addition to the above, it is required that the aggregates will not produce a drying shrinkage in any of the concrete uses. Methods of storage must be such as to ensure freedom from intermingling and segregation.

Models

SchedulesProblem Overview & Goal52014 PMI Scheduling Conferencewww.PMI.org#Design and construction is supported by three key documents:

Here, we got the section through the footing of a building that is produced in the drawing

Then, heres a bill of quantities used for planning construction as well as estimating the total construction costs.

Functions: Drawings show location information

Specifications give information on standards of workmanship and non-graphical information such as process descriptions.

Overtime, drawings have evolved into models within BIM, overcoming initial time-consuming tasks in updating drawing sheets to reflect changes that occcured as projects evolved.

While it is not possible to do an entire Bill of Quantities with BIM because the modelling framework is not Robust enough to cater for that functionality, BIM is smart at automating the schedules for models which can in turn be used in other proprietary software for generating the Bills of quantities used in cost planning.

It is clear that the BIM generates schedules from models. Evidence of the interaction between specifications and schedules and the BIM Models however, is not readily available.

Hence this research is geared towards investigating and proposing practical means of enabling integration of Specification information for use in BIM Models, allowing for a more robust BIM schedule that includes data useful in cost planning.6How can we leverage Material Schedules from proprietary Building Specifications to augment BIM-based Schedules?Key Question62014 PMI Scheduling Conferencewww.PMI.org#Problem ImplicationsBIM-derived schedules are generic

It is too time consuming to manually capture proprietary information based on generic BIM object information

By implication, there are increased risks of overruns (cost and time/schedule) for complicated, large-scale projects characterised by frequent changes in material specifications72014 PMI Scheduling Conferencewww.PMI.org#TOOL

PROPRIETARY SCHEDULEINFORMATIONFuture Work122014 PMI Scheduling Conferencewww.PMI.org#The proposed Integrated Approach simply requires that

From within Model, I can utilise embedded specification information to ensure accurate cost planning

For example, say I want to zoom in on the cost of all the windows in this model (click)

Assuming that all the windows share the same parameter and family attributes,

I should be able to click on a window, to access both its specification and cost information13
