Pilobolus(crystallinus)isaphototropiczygomycete—asun-lovingfungusthatgrowsinbarnyardsandpastures.It’safeistything—only1/4inchtall—thatcanthrowits sporesnearlyeight feet.Rightoveracow.Itisalsoahighlyunusualdancecompany,nowbeginningits39thyearofevolution.

Pilobolus, the arts organism, germinated in thefertile soil of a Dartmouth College dance classin 1971. What emerged was a collaborativechoreographic process and unique weight-sharingapproach to partnering that gave the youngcompanyanontraditionalbutpowerfulnewsetofskillswithwhichtomakedances.

Today Pilobolus is a unique American artsorganization of international influence. It has not,however,forsakenitsoriginalimpetusandremainsadeeplycommittedcollaborativeeffortwith threeartistic directors and over twenty-five full andpart-time dancers contributing to one of the mostpopularandvariedbodiesofworkinthehistoryofthefield.Nearlyfourdecadesofcreativeproductiontestifytothecompany’spositionasanartscollectiveofremarkablefruitfulnessandlongevity.

Pilobolus is based in Washington Depot,Connecticut and performs for stage and televisionaudiences all over the world. Pilobolus worksappear in the repertories of major dancecompanies—the Joffrey, Feld, Ohio, Arizona, andAspen/Santa Fe Ballets in the U.S., the BalletNationaldeNancyetdeLorraineandtheBalletduRhininFrance,andItaly’sVeronaBallet—andthecompany has recently begun a series of majorcreative collaborations, includingnewproductionswith the famed writer and illustrator, MauriceSendak;theIsraelichoreographicteam,InbalPintoandAvshalomPollak;andtheremarkableAmericanpuppeteer,BasilTwist.

Pilobolus has received a number of prestigioushonors, including the Berlin Critic’s Prize, theBrandeis Award, the New England Theatre

Conference Prize, and a Primetime Emmy Awardfor outstanding achievement in culturalprogramming.InJune2000PilobolusreceivedtheSamuelH.ScrippsAmericanDanceFestivalAwardfor lifetime achievement in choreography andin 2004 the company was featured on CBS 60 Minutes. In 2007 Robby Barnett, Michael Tracyand Jonathan Wolken received the Kenneth andHarle Montgomery Endowment Fellowship fromDartmouthCollege.

ThephysicalvocabulariesofPilobolusworksarenotdrawnfromtraditionsofcodifieddancemovementbutareinvented—emergingfromintenseperiodsofimprovisation and creative play. This process hasbeen the source of much interest, in response towhich the company inaugurated the PilobolusInstitute, an educational outreach program usingthe art of choreography as a model for creativethinkinginanyfield.TheInstituteofferssustainedprograms forbothchildrenandadultsaround thecountry,aswellasaseriesofLeadershipWorkshopsforcorporationsandbusinessschools.Recentworkincludes programs at the Wharton School of theUniversity of Pennsylvania, Dartmouth College’sTuck School of Business, and the Babcock Schoolat Wake Forest University. The Institute alsomaintains an ongoing residency in the TheaterStudiesProgramatYaleUniversity.Thethirdarmofthecompany’sactivityisPilobolusCreativeServices,achoreographicandperformancecollective providing movement design andproductionforcommercialapplicationsinbusinessand advertising. PCS has made television spotsfor Mobil, Ford, Toyota, Opel, and Hyundai,created live events for IBM, McKinsey, UnitedTechnologies, Dupont, and Merck, and haspresentedgalaperformancesforJoeBoxer,MaritheGirbaud, MAC Cosmetics and Krizia. In 2007,the company created and presented six acclaimedperformances during the 79th Annual AcademyAwards, as well as producing a series of originalsegmentsfortheOprahWinfreyShow.PCShasalso

produced two books for national distribution,Twisted YogaandThe Human Alphabet,andreleasesan annual calendar of dance photography incollaboration with a number of noted Americanphotographers. Our2009-10seasonmarksthemiddleofPilobolus’39th year. The company has continued to grow,expanding and refining its unusual collaborativemethods to produce a body of over 100choreographic works, and while it has become astable and influential force in the world of dance,Pilobolusremainsasproteanandsurprisingasever.

WHo’s WHo in tHe CoMPanY

Robby Barnettartistic directorwasbornandraisedintheAdirondacksandgraduatedfromDartmouthCollege in 1972. In addition to his work withPilobolus, he has been variously employed as atechnicalmetalworker,an instructor forOutwardBound, Inc.,agardenand landscapedesigner,andhas taughtskiingandhighschoolart.Mr.BarnettlivesinnorthwesternConnecticutwithhiswifeandtwochildren.

Michael tracy artistic director, born in FlorenceandraisedinNewEngland,mettheotherPilobolusfounders at Dartmouth in 1969, becoming anArtisticDirectoraftergraduatingmagnacumlaudein1973.HetouredwithPilobolusfor14years—for8 as the only touring Director—and continues tochoreographanddirect.HehassethisworkontheJoffrey, Ohio, Hartford, Nancy and Verona BalletsandchoreographedaproductionofMozart’sMagicFlute with John Eliot Gardiner, the MonteverdiChoir and the English Baroque Soloists, and anationaltourproductionfortheNationalTheateroftheDeaf.Mr.Tracy teachesatYaleUniversityandlives with his wife and two sons in northwesternConnecticut.

Jonathan Wolken artistic director co-foundedPilobolus in 1971. He was proud to have becomeacquainted with Pilobolus, the fungus, whileresearching its photoreceptor mechanism in hisfather’s biophysics laboratory. Mr. Wolkengraduated from Dartmouth College with a degreein Philosophy. He choreographed for theGlyndebourne Festival Opera’s production ofMaurice Sendak’s Where the Wild Things Are, andcreated Oneiric featured in a jointly producedDanish Television feature for members of theRoyalDanishBallet.Tofindsymmetryandmysteryin his work, Jonathan led a secret second life asPilobolus’DevelopmentDirector.

itamar Kubovy executive director has beenproducing, writing and directing since 1985. AftergraduatingfromYalein1988,hemovedtoEuropewhere he taught, directed and ran theaters inGermanyandSweden.SincereturningtotheUSin1998, Kubovy directed several new works by JohnGuare, co-directed the 2002 season finale of theWest Wing, and made a film, Upheaval, starringFrances McDormand. He joined Pilobolus at thebeginningof2004asthecompany’sfirstExecutiveDirector, overseeing the many moving parts thatmakeupthisgreatcompany.

Renée Jaworskirehearsal director/artistic associateoriginallyfromLongIsland,NYreceivedherBFAinModern Dance from the University of the Arts inPhiladelphia. Upon graduating she fell directlyinto the hands of Moses Pendleton, performingand teaching throughout the world with Momix.In 1997, she took a brief hiatus to give life to herdaughter,AnastasiaWinter.Returningtohercareershe created and performed her own work inPhiladelphiawhileworking forGroupMotionandtouringparttimewithMomix.1998broughtRenéetoNYCwhereshesoonbeganworkingwithCarolynDorfman. She has been working with Pilobolussince 2000 and has had many exciting adventureswith them over the past 9 years, performing,creating,teaching,directing,associatingand,most

recently,coordinatingresidencies for thePilobolusInstitute. She dedicates all she does to her family,Mark and Anastasia. Thank you for keeping myvisionclear.

Winston Dynamite Brown dancer, a native ofKansas City, Missouri, started dancing at SmithSistersDanceStudio.Hecontinuedhis trainingattheMissouriStateBallet,theUniversityofMissouriKansas City, where he received his BFA, and TheCenter Dance under the mentorship of TyroneAiken. Mr. Brown has participated in numerousintensive programs—Kansas City Ballet, AlonzoKing’s pre-professional program, Ailey summerintensiveasthreetimefellowshiprecipientandtheBalletandModernprogramsatJacob’sPillowastheinaugural recipient of the Lorna Strassler Award.Mr. Brown has worked with the Wylliams/HenryDanseTheatre,DeeplyRootedProductions,AlbanyBerkshireBallet,MetropolitanOperaandTaylor2.Prior to joining Pilobolus, he was a freelanceartistworkingwithTUDance,CorbinDances,SeanCurran Company and Ben Munisteri danceprojects.HebegantouringwithPilobolusin2009.

Matt Del Rosario dancer was born and raised inHawaii.Hebegan formaldance trainingat age20undertheguidanceofPaulMaley,whoinspiredhimtogetaBFAinContemporaryDanceattheNorthCarolinaSchooloftheArts.Inhis freetime,Mattlovestosurf,speardiveandplaytheukulele.Matt’simmersion in the Pilobolus adventure—whichbegan in August 2008—is a source of constantexcitement and artistic and personal growth.Thanks to his Ohana (family) for their love andsupport.

eriko Jimbo dancer was born in Japan, raised allover the States, and earned her BFA in dancefrom NC School of the Arts. Since then she hasbeen dancing professionally and broadening herdancing through aerial work, wushu, capoeira,hip-hop,waacking,vogue,bboying,African,house,acrobatics and more. Also a NYC househead, she

performs often and engages in events of theundergroundhouseandhiphopculture,reppinfortwocrews:MAWUandFMinit.Jimbohastraveledthroughout the US, Japan, and Greece to performandteach,andaspirestocontinuetravelingallovertheglobetoshareherpassion.SheofficiallyjoinedPilobolusinAugust2009.

Jun Kuribayashi dance captain was born inJapan then raised in the US since age 5. Hisbackgroundincludescompetitiveswimming,breakdancingandCapoeira.Atage22hebeganlearningdancetechniqueat theUniversityofKansaswherehe eventually earned his BFA. He debutedprofessionally with Momix in 2004 and is nowthrilledtobeapartofthePilobolusfamily.Hegivesspecial thanks to the dance faculty at KU, friendsandfamilies(Kuribayashi&Jones)whosupportedhis decision to follow a once distant dream ofdancing and ESPECIALLY to his wonderfulsupportive wife, Casey Miranda! Jun joinedPilobolusinAugust2004.

nile H. Russell dancer is originally fromBaltimore,MD.HereceivedaB.A. inDance fromConnecticut College in 2004, where he wasfortunateenoughtohavetheguidanceofwonderfuldancersandteacherssuchasDanWagoner,LanLanWang, and Jeremy Nelson. Since moving to NewYork in 2004, Nile has danced with Silver-BrownDance,LeeSaarTheCompany,LuisLaraMalvacias,Stefanie Nelson Dance Group, and NaganumaDance. He will forever thank his friends, family,andmother,Sharon,fortheirloveandsupport.Hejoined the Pilobolus touring company in August2009.

annika sheaff dancer, born and raised outsideChicago began dancing at The Academy ofMovement and Music at age three. She continuedher trainingatTheChicagoAcademy for theArtsandTheJuilliardSchool,whereshereceivedherBFAindanceperformance in2006.Shehasperformedworks by Jose Limon, Paul Taylor, Ohad Naharin,

RonBrownandLucasCrandell.Herchoreographyhas been presented at The Duncan YMCA inChicago,and thePeter J.SharpandClarkeStudioTheatersinNY.ShereceivedtheJuilliardInterartsAwardforherartseducationoutreachworkinNY,FL,andSouthAfrica.She’sabsolutelythrilledtobedancingwithPilobolus.Shethanksherfamilyandfriends for their endless support; andLuke forhisabilitytolightupherlife.

Christopher Whitney dancer is ecstatic to be amemberofPilobolus.HerecentlyearnedhisBFAinDance Choreography and Performance from theHonors Tutorial College at Ohio University. Hebeganhisdancetrainingat18asaninternwithInletDance Theatre in Cleveland, Ohio, under theguidance of Bill Wade. Since then, he has studiedmovement at Jacob’s Pillow, and the Si Ping CityShaolin Martial Arts Academy in Jilin Province,China.Hewould liketothankhis family fortheirever-growingappreciationofhisart,andhisperfectwife, Meredith, for her unflinching love andunderstanding. He and Meredith moved toTorrington, Connecticut from southern Ohio sothathecouldbeginthisnewadventure.

elizabeth Wills director of production was bornand raised in Lockport, NY. She attended SUNYBrockport where she earned a dual degree inModern Dance and Technical Theatre. WhileattendinggraduateschoolinCT,shebeganworkingwith Pilobolus as their production intern andquickly figured out touring was much more funthan doing homework. Elizabeth toured for fouryears as the Production Stage Manager beforetrading inher touring lifestyle for theofficeandapermanent home. She would like to thank hergreatestfans—herhusbandandherfamily,withoutthem,noneofthiswouldbepossible.

shane Mongartechnical directorisoriginallyfromChattanooga,TNbuthasmadeNewYorkCityhishome.AgraduateofWesternKentuckyUniversity,Shane has worked on countless regional, off-

broadwayanddanceproductions.Inhissparetimehe enjoys reading, music and spending time withfamily and friends. Shane would like to thankeveryonewhohashelpedhimonhisjourneyandisexcitedtobeworkingwithPilobolus!

Kristin Helfrich production stage manager holdsa Bachelor’s of Arts in Lighting Design andPhotography from Columbia College in Chicago,Illinois.Prior to joiningPilobolus, she spent threeyearsworkingastheProductionStageManagerandLighting Supervisor for Deeply Rooted DanceTheatre in Chicago, Illinois. Previous work alsoincludes, Production Stage Management, BalletChicago; Master Electrician, American DanceFestival 2007; and Assistant Lighting Designer,National Playwright’s Festival in Waterford, CT.ShecurrentlylivesinherhometownofPittsburgh,PA.

Robert fabriziolighting supervisorisagraduateofNorth Carolina School of the Arts, School ofDesign and Production in Winston-Salem, NCwherehestudiedLightingDesign.Whileattendingschool he worked as a head electrician, assistantlighting designer, and lighting designer fornumerousproductionsencompassingdance,opera,andtheaterandwasnominatedforUSITT’sPragueQuadrennialAwardforhislightingdesignofArnoldWesker’s The Kitchen. Since graduating he hasworked for Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater,Collage Dance Collective and Garage Co. Dance,as the Lighting Director and Resident LightingDesigner for North Carolina Dance Theatre inCharlotte, NC and also as the Associate LightingDesignerforPhoenixEntertainment’snationaltourofThe 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee.HejoinedPilobolusin2010.

Moses Pendleton choreographer was born andraisedonafarminnorthernVermont.Hereceivedhis B.A. in English Literature from DartmouthCollegein1971andco-foundedPilobolusthatsameyearandwasoneofitsartisticdirectorsuntil1990.

In addition to his work with Pilobolus, Pendletonhas choreographed and performed for numerouscompanies throughout the world. He was aGuggenheim Fellow in 1977. Mr. Pendleton hasperformedasa soloist ingalas throughoutEuropeandattheMetropolitanOperaHouseaswellaswithhisowncompany,Momix,whichhefoundedwithAlisonChasein1980.

inbal Pinto choreographer was born in Israel in1969.
