Notes ON THE PROGRAMby Deke Sharon
Although it was only scheduled to hap-pen once, before the very first showSeason 1, NBC loved The Sing Offopening number with all groups somuch they demanded it before every
show. This was the most recent openingnumber from December 2014, the orig-inal dating back to 1982, sung by theUK’s Kim Wylde.
KIDS IN AMERICA (from The Sing Off, Season 5)Mary Wilde & Ricky Wilde
There have been many better superheroT.V. shows and movies through the years, but has there ever been a better superherotheme song than Spiderman? Take the
James Bond theme at twice the speed, play it over the blues while wrestlinglyrics about web slinging to fit the rhymescheme… what’s not to love?!?
SPIDERMANPaul Francis Webster & Robert Harris
Every few years there’s a single popsong that seems to be sung by almostevery a cappella group out there. Mostrecently it was Fix You, and with goodreason: the song is perfectly constructed
melodically, harmonically and lyricallyfor a cappella. That’s why each night asan encore Vocalosity puts down theirmicrophones and sings it acoustically.
FIX YOUBerryman, Buckland, Champion, & Martin
Was there a bigger song in 2015? Notthat I could tell, as this song blastedfrom every storefront and car stereoyear round, welcoming us back to the
cheesy 80s. You can try and resist buteventually the song’s overwhelminggood nature will win you over. The1980’s, on the other hand…
SHUT UP AND DANCEBen Berger & Ryan McMahon

Probably my favorite arrangementfrom Pitch Perfect 2 because we got togive the audience a decade-by-decadehistory of popular women’s harmony
groups. Alas the Pointer Sisters’ “I’mSo Excited” got cut out of the finalmovie version …and what do youmean Hanson isn’t a girl group?
BELLS BACK TO BASICS: BOOGIE WOOGIE BUGLE BOY,YOU CAN’T HURRY LOVE, LADY MARMALADE, MY LOVIN’Brown, Crewe, Foster, Holland, McElroy, Nolan, Starks, & Wesley
I recall over dinner sitting with mypartner in crime Ed Boyer, lamentingthe fact that the Treblemakers only getone featured moment in Pitch Perfect 2.Knowing we needed to make this scene
wonderfully over the top, we won-dered: “What would an overeager col-lege music director do in a desperateattempt to get attention?” Of course! Agospel breakdown!
LOLLIPOP (from Pitch Perfect 2)Mika
Although much of the work we didaround self image was never shown ontelevision, this was perhaps my proud-est moment working with Stay Tunedon the show, as we dug deep and
addressed teenagers’ self image. Singinglead is a woman who deserved far moretime singing lead in Pitch Perfect 2 as anew Barden Bella: the amazing ChrissieFit!
TRY (from Lifetime Television’s Pitch Slapped)Caillat, Babyface, & Reeves
Perhaps a cappella’s greatest gift to theworld is the expression of pure joy onsingers faces as they harmonize togeth-er. Although Pitch Slapped did theirbest to play up the rivalry, I wouldn’t
allow a word of it, and now Stay Tunedand Highlands Voices are fast friends. When you make music the right way, everyone wins.
LOVE SHACK (from Lifetime Television’s Pitch Slapped)Pierson, Schneider, Strickland, & Wilson
I wore this ELO record out, playing itover and over again when it was firstreleased, relishing the layers of vocalsand strings. Since then vinyl became 8-
track became cassette became CDbecame digital download, yet throughall the format changes, a great songremains a great song.
MR. BLUE SKY (from The Sing Off)Jeff Lynne

I had an Aunt Adele growing up, and adecade ago thought “well, that’s aname you’re never gonna hear peopleusing again.” How wrong I was! Thiswas Adele’s first hit, and it all makes
me wonder if my great aunt Melba(who was named after the legendaryAustralian soprano Nellie Melba) willever get the same treatment.
CHASING PAVEMENTSAdele
“So you want me to arrange an a cap-pella version of ‘Axel F’? But it has nolyrics, almost no chords… it’s basicallyjust a single melody… actually, never
mind. I’ll figure it out.” Joining theadult choir is Das Sound Machine’simpossibly awesome beatboxer:Andrew Fitzgerald aka Fitz80!
AXEL F (from the movie Beverly Hills Cop)Caillat, Babyface, & Reeves
When you’re younger you worry if themusic you listen to is cool enough. Then you become a certain age youstop caring what others think and real-ize “Wait a minute, I love the
Carpenters!” It’s impossible not to,with spectacular orchestrations, richharmonies, and above it all one of thegreatest contralto voices of all time:Karen Carpenter.
CLOSE TO YOUBurt Bacharach & Hal David
When conceiving Vocalosity, one of thefirst questions was “how do I give theaudience a history of a cappella with-out making it boring, obvious or didac-tic?” Answer: use a different Beatlessong to represent each of the important
musical periods from Gregorian chantto contemporary a cappella. I’m prettysure it’s the first time “YellowSubmarine” has been sung as a tradi-tional sea shanty.
BEATLES MEDLEYJohn Lennon & Paul McCartney

A few months ago on December 12ththe world celebrated Frank Sinatra’s100th birthday. It just so happens thatI was born on the same day, albeit afew years after him, so I figured it
appropriate to offer the chairman abelated birthday song… even thoughlet’s be honest: Sammy Davis Jr. wasmore talented and should have had thespot at the head of the table.
COME FLY WITH ME (from The Sing Off)Jimmy Van HeusenLyrics by Sammy Cahm
I recall meeting John Legend (then JohnStevens) at Carnegie Hall when he wasa college student in the finals of thethen National (now international)Championship of College A Cappella. I
did not expect that two decades laterhe’d write one of the best ballads of thedecade and I’d be performing it on thestage where we first met.
ALL OF METoby Gad & John Stephens
The music doesn’t need to end here.Join a group! The Contemporary ACappella League, BarbershopHarmony Society, Sweet AdelinesInternational, Chorus America all have
great lists. And if there’s not one inyour area, I’ll help you start one.Seriously! For now, sing along, clapalong, dance along, join with everyonein the hall to make a choir of 3,200!
