PRESIDENT “Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.” (Matthew 5:12)
I think one of my favorite passages in the Bible is Matthew’s Beatitudes. One of our studies at Mission u was about happiness. In that study they talk about substituting happiness for the word blessed in the Beatitudes. What a unique idea. I loved this study. If you were unable to go to Mission u this summer, think about going to the one in the fall—October 16-18. This one is shorter but just as inspiring. The other two studies are about Disabilities and Latin America. There are a number of articles in the April issue of the Response magazine about Latin America that you might enjoy.
I want to personally invite you to our District meeting in Osceola on Friday, September 25. Our conference President, Rita Vallery will be the main speaker. Registration is 8:30 and we will start at 9:00. Please find the invitation in this letter. Be sure you invite your Pastor and Spouse. If you need child care, call me or Linda DeJoode.

VICE PRESIDENT “I have said these things to you so that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be complete.” (John 15:11)
I am writing this just a couple of days before going to Mission u. Once again I am looking forward to this experience. The Spiritual Growth study is “Created for Happiness: Understanding Your Life in God”. Do you call it happiness, joy, contentment, satisfaction and where does that feeling come from? This study will help us understand happiness and how to live the life that God calls us to.
Plans for the District Annual Meeting are moving along. Our meeting will be Friday, September 25 in Osceola. I hope that many will be able to attend. At one of my shepherdess visits, I found 3 generations of women from one family in attendance. I think this is great. For any of us, our first memories of UMW (or WSCS/ Ladies Aid) come from attending with our mothers and/or grandmothers. Do you have 3 generations active in your unit? Please let me know by letter, phone, or email and we will recognize you at the District Meeting. It would be wonderful if they could be in attendance, also.
If anyone would like child care for our District Meeting, please let me know so we can put it in place. Also, we would like to ask each church to bring one or two good children’s books that will be donated to the Justice for Our Neighbors (JFON) Clinics. Volunteers there read to the children while their parents are busy. They can be in English, Spanish, or bilingual, but need good pictures. This also helps the children with their English.
A registration form for the District Annual Meeting is included with this newsletter. Be sure to let the Osceola women know how many are planning to attend so they can plan our lunch.
I’m looking forward to seeing many of you at Mission u and again at the District Meeting.

2 SECRETARY Greetings to everyone from your district secretary! Seems like summer is starting to wind down which means it’s almost time for our annual South Central District meeting. I hope to see you in Osceola on September 25 for a great day of fellowship.
At the annual meeting an officer reporting form will be handed out. Please list your new officers for 2016 and send to me before the end of 2015. We ask for the name, address, phone, and email if applicable. This list is used for the newsletter and for the district officers to get in touch with local units. While we realize some units struggle to find officers, we do need the names of one or two persons to be “contacts” for your unit.
If you have any questions, please contact me at the address below. See you in Osceola United Methodist Church!
Janelle Hunsicker Janelle Hunsicker , 1912 N. Elm, Ottumwa, IA 52501 (Phone) 641-682-6060 or (Cell #) 641-777-5206 Email: [email protected] TREASURER Greetings to South Central Treasurers, and Congratulations! You have remitted $28,621.94 toward your $60,000 pledge for 2015. Pledge to Mission, Special Mission Recognition, Gift to Mission, Gift in Memory, World Thank Offering, Penny-a-Day, Love Offering, and Misc. Pledge goes toward your district pledge. The pledge is what your unit plans to give. Special Mission Recognition is a pin purchased to honor a person; Gift in Mission is a card purchased to send; Gift in Memory is to honor a member following their death; and World Thank Offering is a spontaneous giving out of love for God and people. All other giving is designated by you as to where you want it to be sent. Iowa has three National Institutions – Bidwell Riverside in Des Moines, Shesler Hall in Sioux City and Hawthorn Hill in Des Moines.
Annual Meeting will be Friday, September 25, in Osceola United Methodist Church. Two offerings will be taken. The Love Offering will go toward your district pledge. This year Bidwell Riverside is the featured institution. You are asked to bring a special offering to be sent to them. Unit and personal offerings will both be accepted. I ask that you put the two offerings in separate envelopes marked where it is to go. One check is OK, just so you tell how it is to be divided. Bidwell Riverside funds have been reduced; therefore, they are relying more and more on individual giving in order to keep on serving those in need.
It would be nice if all units could be 5 Star units. It only consists of sending an offering toward your pledge, purchasing a $40 dollar Special Mission Recognition pin, buying one Gift to Mission card for $5.00, a minimum of $5 for Gift in Memory (even if you have no one to honor) and any amount of remittance for the World Thank Offering.
I would like to see all of you at annual meeting. If you cannot make it, I will be enclosing information with your Unit packet. Treasurers make sure you obtain this information from the Unit packet. If you have questions, please do not hesitate in giving me a call.
God Bless you all. You are an awesome group of women. You continually amaze me.

NOTE: We send to President and Secretary of each Unit. IF ANYONE IN YOUR UNIT HAS
EMAIL ADDRESS, they can go online and download and print their own copy. We encourage
them to do so. We are trying to keep our printing costs down so that more of our money can
be used toward United Methodist Women’s Missions. Go to: http://www.iaumc.org/umw/
3 SPIRITUAL GROWTH COORDINATOR “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.” (Hebrews 13:8)
What a wonderful promise is given to us in the scriptures! While changes in our life, community, and world are ongoing, it is reassuring to know that we have an unchanging Savior. I hope the changes occurring in your life are positive; but if not, our Lord can be trusted to sustain you through challenging times and unexpected changes.
I have had a wonderful time getting to know United Methodist Women in our district. During May, I visited with a UMW representative from First United Methodist Church in Ottumwa and learned about their work projects that support the ministries of their church. In June, I enjoyed a time of fellowship with an ecumenical group of women at the Eldon United Methodist Church. Though it was a rainy (not a surprise this summer) and cold day, the welcome I received was warm and friendly. I was treated to delicious baked goods and lively conversation by Christian women. Prior to our July District Officer’s meeting, I had the opportunity to attend Guest Day at the Trinity United Methodist Church in Albia. A potluck lunch preceded an interesting program by Jim and Joyce Nelson on their trip to Kenya. The food was superb and the hostesses were welcoming. Joyce Nelson and I worked together a number of years at Indian Hills Community College, so it was great to see her again and hear about their many travels. I want to thank all the United Methodist Women for their hospitality.
In July, I attended Mission u for the first time. I was particularly interested in meeting with other district Spiritual Growth Coordinators and learning more about this office.
I pray that you have a blessed summer and hope to see you at the District Meeting in Osceola on Friday, September 25.
Praising God for His unchanging nature.

For our UMW this might be a reminder that it is “time to clean out that closet” to prepare for our yearly Parking Lot (garage/yard) sale. Whatever your summer project may be, do it with love and a happy heart.
I hope this correspondence finds everyone enjoying their summer activities. Mission u was a good experience with the Spiritual Growth Study and I chose to take the Latin America study and did enjoy the material, teacher, etc. that goes along to make for a learning experience.
Please include the South Central District meeting into your schedule (see the flyer in this newsletter).
For anyone interested in receiving the UMW Action Alerts, the following steps will lead you to receive the information; go to www.unitedmethodistwomen.org/action_alerts. A screen will pop up asking for information – complete, click and you have the current Action Alerts that are of interest to United Methodist Women. However, if I have not explained myself well or you cannot get to the right place, just e-mail me and I will forward any and all Action Alerts that I receive, to your inbox.
The Social Action Chairman from my Unit showed the video “Any Kid, Anywhere”. We opened the doors of our church and invited a variety of people such as school counselors, city and county police officers, the county attorney, city manager and of course our minister and many of the UMW attended. This will be one of the break-out sessions during our District meeting, September 25.
Travel safely in all your journeys. I’m looking forward to seeing you at the District meeting in Osceola.

MEMBERSHIP, NURTURE & OUTREACH COORDINATOR
“Share with God’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality.” (Romans 12:13 NIV)
I recently attended the District Officer Training Event. Did you know the average age of a UMW member in the USA is 67 years old and the average age of a UMW member outside of the USA is 28 years old? How can we provide an opportunity for women of all ages to join us in our PURPOSE? The following are a small sample of ideas shared; 1) Simply ask women to join us and be persistent inviting them. Remember, they can be of any church denomination. 2) Work on tangible projects. People want to see love in action and know their time is being used to help others, and 3) Organize a unit at a nursing care facility or have your unit meet there at intervals during the year. Work on mission project items, have Bible Study, or a sing-a-long.
I hope to see you at the District Meeting in September. Ask a prospective member(s) to come with you to experience what our PURPOSE is all about.

SECRETARY PROGRAM RESOURCES
By the time you read this, the 2016 Reading Program should be out. I plan to have the brochures and some books available at the fall meeting, September 25. Remember that you can count books from the 2011-2016 reading lists for your 2016 record. I suggest you show the new list to your local library to see if they have any of the books or would be interested in obtaining them. The book that I am reading right now is one that should be in every library.
