Welcome to the 2019-2020 school year! I hope that your school year had a positive start. This is going to be a busy year for the MSADA. We are the host state for the NFHS/NIAAA National Athletic Directors Conference from December 13th – 17th at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center in National Harbor, Maryland. As we gather ourselves to host over 2,000 athletic directors from all over the country and even some international athletic administrators, please know that your Executive Council has worked diligently with the NFHS and the NIAAA to ensure that this will be THE BEST national conference to date. We hope to see each of you at the National Conference as it is in our backyard. So, No Excuses!
As the Council focuses on the National Conference, we are still planning our own conference in Ocean City, on April 23rd – 26th, 2020 at the Princess Royale Hotel and Conference Center. We are always trying to make the conference better each year for all athletic directors, with new LTI classes, meaningful seminars and real opportunities to network with fellow athletic directors as we continue to grow and learn to better serve our student-athletes and stakeholders.
We have come to that time of year where we are beginning to feel that mental and physical fatigue. You have been grinding since August! Even though we are treated as super-humans, we are still human. Please take the time to put YOURSELF first. We can’t fully serve others if we are half empty.

CONGRATULATIONS, BRADAt the Section 2 Meeting in June, Brad Criss was selected to be the Section 2 candidate for the NIAAA Region B At Large position.
The election will take place at the National Athletic Directors Conference in December in National Harbor. Brad will be running againist the candidate from Section 7.
Brad will be presented as a candidate at the First General Session on Saturday, December 14 at 5:00pm.

MSADA/NIAAA MEMBERSHIP WHY SHOULD I JOIN MY
PROFESSIONAL ASSOCIATIONS?
Unfortunately, this past school year we had a decrease in memberships in both the MSADA and the NIAAA. We had 29 fewer MSADA members and 25 fewer NIAAA members than the previous year.
Please consider becoming a member of both your local and national professional associations. The benefits of membership are incredible.
Included in this issue is the MSADA/NIAAA Membership Form. Some of the benefits of MSADA membership are reduced rates for the State Conference and any Leadership Training Courses the MSADA offers; eligibility to be nominated for MSADA awards and much more.

In MemoriamOn August 20, 2019, Richard L. Knode passed away. “Dick” was 79. Dick was born and raised in Hagerstown, Maryland. After graduating from North Hagerstown High School in 1957, Dick went on to earn his Bachelor of Arts degree from Shepherd College. He earned his Master’s degree from George Washington University.
He was a Prince George’s County Public Schools physical education teacher, coach and athletic director for 34 years. Dick coached football and track. He spent the last 25 years of his career at Friendly High School in Fort Washington.
He had many successful seasons coaching track. His 1975 Boys Indoor Track team was the Class ABC Maryland State Champions. His Boys Outdoor Track and Field Teams were Class A Maryland State Champions in 1974 and Class AA Champions in1977.
Dick was the recipient of the Washington District Officials Association’s ‘Hobie D. O’Meara’ Award. In 2001 he was inducted into the Washington County Sports Hall of Fame.
Besides being an active member in many organizations, Dick was very active in the MSADA. Dick was a member of the Executive Council from 1988-1996 representing Prince George’s County. He was selected the 1989 District Athletic Director of the Year by his colleagues and he was inducted into the MSADA Hall of Fame in 1996.
Dick is survived by his wife Mary Jane (53 years), daughters Kara V. Nelson (Joseph), Tracy J. Edwards (Bradley), Kelli L. Knode (Keith Alioto), seven grandchildren, a sister and two brothers-in-law.

Congratulations, Sherwood High SchoolIn an effort to recognize and commend excellence in the implementation and administration of outstanding high school athletic programs, the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (NIAAA) has initiated the NIAAA Quality Program Award.
Sherwood High School and its high school athletic program have been identified as a 2019 recipient of the NIAAA Quality Program Award at the Exemplary Level. Pursuant to multiple reviews of the Sherwood High School Quality Program application and submitted evidence-based documentation, we are pleased to extend a sincere NIAAA congratulations.
To be recognized as a Quality Program Award Exemplary High School Athletic Program, an applicant athletic director must have successfully completed LTC 799 and present evidence of existing policies, practices, and procedures that meet suggested content rubrics (criteria) within the ten Quality Program assessment categories. For each of the ten assessment categories, providing documentation of existing school and/or district policies and procedures and program achievements claims points.
The Quality Program Award (plaque, banner, and commendation letter) will be presented to Mr. Jason Woodward, CMAA, Athletic Director, Sherwood High School, at the 2019, NIAAA Annual Business meeting held during the NIAAA/NFHS National Conference in National Harbor, Maryland. In addition, the Sherwood High School athletic program will be featured in the NIAAA Interscholastic Athletic Administrator Journal, on the NIAAA Web site and in the E-Newsletter as well as media releases to the local news outlets.
It is important to recognize that Quality Program recognition assumes continuing research and implementation of professional “benchmarks” and best practices by all award recipients. It is particularly important to pursue highest benchmarks in those areas and criteria in your school’s Quality Program assessment that did not receive maximum assessment scores. NIAAA emphasizes that an EXEMPLARY recognition does not insulate the school administration from challenges concerning philosophy, instructional methods, procedures, techniques and a range of risk management measures. The primary goal of the NIAAA Quality Program Award model is to encourage measurement, planning, and goal setting aimed at continuous improvement of local school athletic programs.
In closing, the NIAAA embraces local school innovation and vision that makes use of suggested best practices in high school athletic programs. The Sherwood High School athletic programs, its athletic director, principal, superintendent, and school board truly deserve to be congratulated and recognized for implementing and supporting an outstanding athletic program and a commitment to continuous improvement.

CONGRATULATIONS TO MAX DAVID FRIEDMAN
In last spring’s MSADA Newsletter, it was announced that Max David Friedman was selected as the NIAAA/MSADA Essay Scholar-Athlete from Maryland. Max’s application and essay were then submitted to the NIAAA Section 2. He was in competition with student-athletes from Delaware, Kentucky, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia. At the Section 2 Summer Meeting it was announced that Max was selected as the Section 2 winner. Now Max’s application and essay were in competition with the winners from the other seven sections in the country.
In August, the MSADA received word that Max was selected the NIAAA National Scholar-Athlete Scholarship winner. Max will be honored at the First General Session on Saturday, December 14 at the National Conference.
This is Maryland’s third national winner since the scholarship program started in 2007.
Please plan to attend to meet and greet Max.

CRAB TALK!
DISTRICT 1BBest retirement wishes to David Dolch, Carroll County Athletic Supervisor and Jim Horn, Athletic Director at South Carroll High School. Michael Duffy, the former Athletics and Activities Manager at Howard High School is the new Supervisor and Tim Novotny is the new Athletic Director at South Carroll.
DISTRICT 2B Montgomery County Public Schools has three new athletic directors. Damascus High School welcomes Cliff Elgin. Cliff was an Assistant Athletic Director at Clarksburg High School. After a brief time away, Jon Freda returns as the Athletic Director at Richard Montgomery High School. And former Thomas S. Wootton High School Assistant Athletic Director, Alton Lightsey takes over as their new Athletic Director.
Wheaton High School’s new athletic facilities are now in use on their stadium field. The remainder of the construction should be completed by the spring. Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School and Albert Einstein High School now have turf fields.
DISTRICT 3Prince George’s County Public Schools has had several Athletic Director changes as well. Bryan Trueblood who was the Athletic Director at Central High School has taken over the AD duties at Bladensburg High School. There are also four new Athletic Directors. Thomas Dunn at Chesapeake Math and IT Academy North, Jamal Sims at Croom Vocational High School, Brandon Haslun at the International High School in Langley Park and Largo and Larry Ward at Central High School.
Two schools had some new installations. Oxon Hill High School had stadium lights installed and Eleanor Roosevelt installed new bleachers and a new press box.
Finally, Central High School is currently housed at Forestville High School while the school undergoes renovations.
DISTRICT 4Charles County has two Athletic Directors that have earned their CMAA - LaPlata High School’s, Richard Pauole and St. Charles High School’s, Jennifer Smith. Congratulations to you both.
Michael Watson is the new St. Mary’s County Public Schools Athletic Supervisor. Michael takes over for Andy Roper who retired at the end of the 2018-19 school year.
There two new Athletic Directors in District 4. John Lush, at Henry E. Lackey High School and Duane Atherton, at St. Mary’ Ryken High School.
Past MSADA President, Brad Criss is running for the NIAAA Region B At Large position. The election will take place at the National Athletic Directors Conference in December.
DISTRICT 5District 5 wants to congratulate and send their best wishes to Annapolis High School’s Dave Gehrdes and Broadneck High School’s Ken Kazmarek as they begin their retirement. Both had long outstanding careers in education and athletic administration in Anne Arundel County.
With the two retirements and Severna Park High School’s Dave Lanham relocating to Florida, there have been many Athletic Director moves in Anne Arundel County. North County High School’s Pete Alvanos has moved over to Annapolis High School, Kevin Necessary, who was at Arundel High School, is now at Broadneck High School and Meade High School’s Kevin Rutledge is at Severna Park.
New Athletic Directors in Anne Arundel County are: Ryan Woods at Arundel, Matt Smith at Chesapeake Point High School, Jamie Cook at Meade and Ryan Aleardi at North County.
Maryland State Coaches Association Executive Director, Lisa Magness is the new Assistant Athletic Director at Northwest High School in Montgomery County.
In Howard County, Beth DeFrances returns to athletic administration as the Athletic and Activities Manager at Howard High School.

DISTRICT 6The Baltimore County Public Schools has two new Athletic Directors, Dana Loverde at Pikesville High School and Jen Rowe at Western School of Technology and Environmental Sciences.
DISTRICT 7Harford County Public Schools and Patterson Mill High School would like to welcome new Athletic Director, Jeroud Clark.
Cecil County’s North East High School’s new turf field is now complete.
DISTRICT 8The Eastern Shore welcomes Kareem Otey as the new Athletic Director at Cambridge- South Dorchester High School. She has already proven to be a great addition to the Bayside Athletic Conference.
Three schools in District 8 had new turf fields installed over the summer - Kent Island High School, Queen Anne’s County High School and Stephen Decatur High School. They join Pocomoke High School and Snow Hill High School.
DISTRICT 9The National Academy Foundation in Baltimore City welcomes their new Interim Athletic Director, Shalane Price.
DISTRICT 10Jodi Blackburn is the Interim Athletic Director at Garrison Forest School.
DISTRICT 10 AND 11Josiah Wolf is the new Athletic Director at the Annapolis Area Christian School taking over for the now retired Jim Domoracki. Chapelgate Christian Academy’s new Athletic Director is Ken Krabitz.
St. Mary’s High School in Annapolis replaced their turf field this summer.
MPSSAAKen Kazmarek didn’t stay retired for too long. Ken was appointed the Coordinator of Officials for the MPSSAA. He was the long time Athletic Director and Department Chairperson for Physical Education and Health at Broadneck High School. Ken also was a basketball official with the Baltimore Metro Association and a collegiate basketball official with the Collegiate Officials Association.

To ALL NIAAA Members, The National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association has selected the Wounded Warrior Project as the 2019 Initiative to help benefit the men and woman of the Wounded Warrior Project. WWP offers 20 holistic programs to wounded service members and their caregivers completely free of charge and 100% of the funds raised through this event go directly to Wounded Warrior Project to help fuel these programs.
The National Initiative and Assistance Network Committee has set a goal of at least $5 per NIAAA member totaling $56,740.00 nationally. Working together as an association driven to serve, please join us in making a difference with our wounded warriors by encouraging all members to contribute.

The Maryland State Coaches Association (MSCA) along with the Maryland State Athletic Directors Association (MSADA) would like to congratulate the following coaches for representing our state as the National Federation of High School (NFHS) Sports Coaches of the Year in their respective sport(s) category. They are recognized by boys’ sports and girls’ sports (by participation numbers) and two “other” sports, one for boys and one for girls. This year we had 18 coaches nominated for 20 different sport categories; two coaches were nominated for a boys’ sport and a girls’ sport.
Recipients for this year’s awards for boys’ sports are; Daniel Mangum (Colonel Richardson High School-Baseball), Chad Hollwedel (Centennial High School-Boys Basketball), Gio Reumante (Northwood High School-Boys Cross Country), Robert Youngblood (Northwest High School-Boys Outdoor Track), Shawn Behegan (North County High School-Boys Soccer), Charles Boling (Howard High School-Boys Tennis), Mike Neubeiser (Northwest High School-Football), and John Klessinger (South River High School-Wrestling).
Recipients for this year’s awards for girls’ sports are; Teresa Waters (River Hill High School-Girls Basketball), Brendan Lees (Sherwood High School-Girls Swimming and Diving), Robert Youngblood (Northwest High School-Girls Outdoor Track), Charles Boling (Howard High School-Girls Tennis), Ashley Barber-Strunk (Sherwood High School-Softball), and Stephanie Blake (Northwest High School-Volleyball).
Recipients for this year’s awards for “other” sports are; Lisa Magness (North County High School-Boys’ Other-Unified/Allied Sports) and Jeanette Ireland (Mt. Hebron High School-Girls’ Other-Field Hockey).
The NFHS Coach of the Year Award is an annual award given out and was first started in 1981-1982. The coaches had to be active coaches in their sports during the year in which they are receiving the award. This year’s award is for the 2018-2019 season.
Maryland’s 14 coaches were nominated by their schools’ Athletic Administrators. A committee formed of state coaches and athletic directors met and selected a coach from each sport category to represent our state. Their names are then submitted to the NFHS for selection for sectional, regional and national awards. The announcement of these awards will come from the NFHS in late January.
We also would like to recognize the following four coaches who were nominated for their respective sport categories; Scott Robinson (Howard High School-Girls Basketball), Zachary Dickerson (Howard High School-Boys Cross Country), James Creighton (Howard High School-Boys Other-Boys Lacrosse), and Nick Good-Malloy (Annapolis High School-Football).
On behalf of the MSCA and MSADA, we congratulate all 18 of these coaches for the outstanding work they do day in and day out for our student-athletes.

NIAAA Update
As we reflect on the 2018-2019 year at the NIAAA, we are so thankful for each of our 12,053 members that we get to serve every day. We come to work every day for you and are thankful for your support of the NIAAA. Here is a quick recap of what happened this past year:
• Launched the Member Intern Program for the Professional Development Academy
• Launched the pilot program for the NIAAA U Leadership Cohort
• Surpassed 12,000 members• Implemented a member data protection policy• Expanded our office staff by hiring Alex Ferguson as
an administrative assistant• Achieved record attendance at the national conference• Added LTC 503 and LTC 510 to our online course catalog
and taught over 1,300 online courses• Taught 13 courses to over 150 students in seven states
through the Outreach Program funded by the NIAAA Endowment Fund
• Added our 29th Dual State: Idaho• Inducted the 10th class into the NIAAA Hall of Fame• Returned over $50,000 in royalties to state athletic
administrators associations• Partnered with an advertising agency to advocate for
athletic administrators through targeted marketing campaigns and offering state-specific Public Service Announcements to local radio stations all over the country

We would like to wish all the coaches, student-athletes and athletic administrations a wonderful and successful 2019-2020 athletic year. We look forward to hearing and celebrating all the wonderful things our athletic programs around the state do throughout the year. We are in our second year of our dual membership costing $20 per member. This is lowest dual membership in all of the 50 states. In April of 2019 we had a “Wheel of Prizes” at the MSADA State Conference and many of our state ADs won free memberships or reduced cost memberships for their staffs. We are hoping this will help increase our membership participation.
We also increased our National Federation of High School Coach of the Year Nominations. We had 18 coaches nominated; two were nominated for two different sports. This is an 11 person increase from 2018-2019 and a 12 person increase from 2017-2018. Our goal is to increase our nominations every year. ADs and MSADA Council members sent out emails from early September to the middle of October to get ADs and others to nominate deserving coaches of this award. A committee was formed to select one name from each coaching category to send as our representative from Maryland to be considered for sectional, regional and national Coach of the Year for their particular sport category. I would like to thank Dana Johnson, Tina Queen, Anne Rossiter, Marianne Shultz, Jason Woodward, and Allison Fondale for serving on the committee to select from these talented coaches. Below are the names that were sent to the NFHS representing Maryland.

We also had four coaches who earned honorable mention for their sports. Those coaches are Zachary Dickerson (Howard-Boys Cross Country), Nick Good-Malloy (Annapolis-Football), James Creighton (Howard-Boys Lacrosse) and Scott Robinson (Howard-Girls Basketball). Congratulations to these coaches.
ReimbursementsThe MSCA also issued $100 reimbursements to members who followed the steps (below) and earned their AIC or CIC Certification through the National Federation. We issue 20 AIC per year and 20 CIC per year. As of 10/13/2019 we have given out two AIC reimbursements (18 left for 2019-20 membership year) and one CIC reimbursement (19 left for 2019-20 membership year). It is important that ADs and coaches know and understand the policies (see below).

Reimbursement for AIC and CIC• Join the NFCA and MSCA • Receive your membership card (This will come in the mail with a letter about 35 days after your membership
is inputted into the system)• Earn your AIC or CIC. You are eligible for one AIC reimbursement and one CIC reimbursement. However,
you may only earn one reimbursement per membership year. • Your AIC or CIC certificate must be dated after (when you receive your letter there will be a date in a blank
of when your certificate must be dated by) in order to be eligible for a reimbursement. – If your county accepts Care and Prevention as a replacement for First Aid, Health and Safety, please
see below:• You can enter this into the NFHSlearn.com portal (NEXT SLIDE EXPLAINS THE PROCESS)• One of the courses needed for AIC or CIC MUST BE COMPLETED AFTER you become a
member of the NFCA/MSCA for that membership year• Example for AIC:
– Care and Prevention (taken before member of NFCA/MSCA)– Concussion in Sport (taken before member of NFCA/MSCA)– Fundamentals of Coaching (taken before member of NFCA/MSCA)– Sport specific course (taken after you become a member of NFCA/MSCA and after
you receive letter in mail with date)
• Once you earn your AIC or CIC, you must send your certificate that you can download from the NFHS website once you complete your certification to Lisa Magness at [email protected]
• Lisa Magness will then make sure you are a member and check with the NFHS to make sure you did complete your AIC or CIC. Once that is cleared and approved, the MSCA treasurer will send a $100 check made out to you to your school’s Athletic Director. Lisa Magness will send you an email stating the status of your reimbursement.
• Begin using the AIC or CIC after your signature
• All requests for reimbursements MUST be sent to Lisa Magness via email by May 15, 2020 at 11:59pm. Reimbursements after this date will not be granted.
• It is encouraged that you email Lisa Magness, [email protected] with ANY questions before you start any courses to make sure you understand all the procedures and you understand what is needed for you to earn the reimbursement.
Please note, only 20 AIC Certifications and 20 CIC Certifications per year will be reimbursed. However, at any time, reimbursements may not be accepted or granted due to unforeseen circumstances.
