Dr. Kim Hunter Reed Met with CCD Educators, Students, and Staff.

Dr. Kim Hunter Reed, executive director of the Colorado Department of Higher Education (CDHE), paid a visit to the Auraria Campus in September to meet with Community College of Denver (CCD) educators, students and staff as part of a state- wide tour of higher education institutions.

Dr. Reed joined CCD leadership for conversation and coffee about the value of a community college education. Following that, she was given a tour of the Auraria Campus by CCD student ambassadors and had the opportunity to meet with deans and department heads to learn about CCD’s academic programs. The day also included a discussion over lunch with student leaders, during which the students were able to speak about their lives as community college students and the challenges they face. Dr. Reed’s impressions of CCD are a strong testament to CCD’s progress. Here’s what she had to say: "CCD is a campus on a mission to educate students, serve the community, and advance workforce engagement. I was honored to visit the campus last week and hear from President Freeman and his team about CCD’s inspiring vision and work. I enjoyed the opportunity to learn more about the career choice assistance and student success efforts from the faculty and staff. CCD has implemented many strong support

programs, from the pairing of academic and CTE classes to tutoring, textbook lending and housing stipends. And as always, it was refreshing to hear directly from students about their goals and experiences. Congratulations on an amazing 50 years and here’s to the next!" Thank you for visiting CCD, Dr. Reed! And thank you to all the students, faculty and staff who participated and spoke with Dr. Reed!

CCD’s Confucius Institute Celebrates 10 Years!

Community College of Denver was honored to host a delegation from the Consulate General of the People’s Republic of China in Chicago on our campus. Later that same week, we met with our partners and friends from the University of Jinan in China. Both groups were here to help us celebrate CCD’s Confucius Institute 10 year anniversary which took place at the end

of that week. The Confucius Institute is part of an international network of 500 centers around the world that promotes the culture and language of China. It is also the only one in the world on a community college campus!

Our time together with both delegations brought about a meaningful and valuable exchange of educational and cultural ideas. We look forward to continuing future exchanges!

CCD Looking to Make Waves with Concurrent Enrollment.

CCD has applied for accreditation through the National Alliance of Concurrent

Enrollment Partnerships (NACEP). The college has been working on this for the past

two and a half years and we are on track to become the first college or university in

Colorado to earn this distinction!

This is a college wide process that requires participation from department from across

the college to document the quality of concurrent enrollment programs. As a college, we

should take collective pride in this process

We will be notified of the final accreditation decision by late April 2018!

Brandon Protas our Director of College Pathways has been

spearheading this effort and recently returned from the

NACEP Conference. One of our concurrent enrollment

students, Oliver Martinez-Reyes, attended as well, as part of

the student discussion panel where he talked about all the

college level resources available to him and his fellow high

school students. He also spoke about the acceleration and

how critical that acceleration is as specially as an evaluation

tool. Check out the video that features both Brandon and

Oliver promoting Concurrent Enrollment!

By Tom McGhee | The Denver Post | October 20, 2017 After her first child was born, Jasmine White Struggled through periods of homelessness, only relieved by time spent in shabby housing. Postpartum depression weighed on her mind. The father of her child wouldn’t help with the bills. She was robbed, at gunpoint. Her life felt out of control. She was ready for a change and took a friend’s offer to fly her to Denver in 2015. The move sparked the change she was looking for: Today, White is well on her way to earning an associate degree at Community College of Denver, through the College to Career program at Warren Village. BootUp Camps are Taking Community College of Denver by Storm.

Lynn Wilson, Associate Professor of Business & Entrepreneurship and founder of SparqU, took initiative and wrote a grant proposal to receive one of the Innovation Grants and was awarded $65,000.00! The beauty of this grant is that it looks outward towards the community and the resources we have there, which we are not taking advantage of to meet the need of an underserved population. With this grant he started BootUp Camps, which are innovative STEM-based accelerator programs, click to view upcoming classes. As for the grant, it is designed to target underserved and underrepresented communities and get them into

high demand fields through three specific pathways: Information Technology, Entrepreneurship, & Manufacturing. If you have a certified skill you will move up quite quick in the working world. So we will help students and the community get those certifications though multi day/week programs, and one day exposure programs. This will also create exposure to the public about the possibility of earning their degree and not just a certificate. While the market runs these courses for $2500, we are aiming to do the exact same thing for $500 – $1000! This fee will help to make this program self-sustaining by the time the grant runs out. The five Saturdays PC Course already has a wait list to get in!
