President Elect - Sue Swider

I attended several meetings, including four Executive Committee meetings via conference call and in person, five Program Committee meetings and three Quad-Council meetings. I contributed to two major projects: 1) revising the Quad Council competencies to reflect new competencies with Michelle Cravetz (ASTDN) and Joyce Krothe; and 2) drafting a response from ACHNE to NACNS proposed doctoral competencies with J. Krothe.

Awards Committee - Corinne Fessenden Committee members: Virginia Chafin, Mary Ellen Mitchell Rosen, Diane Ernst, Joanne Dalton, Lisa Turner, Susan Devaney and we have two members who are participating to learn the ropes of committee work in ACHNE, Mary Pittsley and Debi Foster. The committee is working on several new awards for presentation to the Board. The major awards under consideration are one for Diversity and one for Innovative CHN Teaching. The committee is about 1 month behind our timeline; there is enough time to complete the planned work. The call for nominations for awards should go out no later than mid November.

Education Committee - Bonnie Callen and Barbara Little The Education Committee revised the Essentials of Baccalaureate Nursing Education for Entry Level Community/Public Health Nursing and the final version is projected to be completed in November 2009 (authors – Derryl Block, Barbara Joyce, Jayne Lutz, Nancy Brown-Schott, Claudia Smith). Meanwhile, we have been working on abstracts to present the new Essentials at appropriate conferences such as the CAN conference in Chicago in November and the ACHNE 2010 conference in Arlington. Goals for this year are to: 1) maximize the use of the ACHNE website for dissemination of teaching strategies and 2) offer a post conference at the 2010 annual conference. The process for submitting teaching strategies as well as reviewing and posting them on the website is being designed. A teaching strategies submission form is being piloted. Planning for a two-hour post-conference on Innovative Teaching Strategies for C/PHN Education for Saturday, June 12th, 2010 is also underway. The 2009-2010 Education Committee includes Pamela Ark, Nancy Brown-Schott, Diane Ernst, Philip Greiner, Barbara Joyce, Marilyn King, Joan Kub, Jayne Lutz, Christine Savage, Christine L. Vandenhouten.

Finance Committee - Diane McNaughton Members: Corinne Fessenden, Arlene Miller, and Pamela Schlomann. Members met with Kristi Klinke and David Stumph from RCA; reviewed the proposed 2010 budget line by line and will present the 09-10 budget to the ACHNE Board for approval at the mid-year meeting.

Communications Committee - Elizabeth Bicknell and Margaret Beaman Committee members: Lynn Blanchette, Margaret Cassey, Mary Hoke, Ilene Prokup. The Committee focused on the newsletter and the website this year. The first electronic newsletter will be the winter edition posted in the Member’s Only Section highlighting the 2009 Annual Institute which includes: presentations, photos, call for nominations and news items. All presenters were asked to forward their presentations and power point slides to the committee. The decision is to do two newsletters a year - March and September. We are doing monthly reviews of the website and contacting committee chairs for updating content. We discussed developing a process for collaborative activities with the Archives, Membership and Education Committees to enhance membership contributions to the website. Three ongoing goals include 1) developing an event calendar for the website, along with topic discussion areas, 2) developing a process for committees to submit information for the Newsletter, and 3) formalizing a communication pathway for the Communication Committee to receive ongoing information to share with members.

Research Committee -Barbara Polivka Committee members: Martha Bergren, Rosemary Chaudry, Ruby Dunlap, Lin Drury, Naomi Ervin, Judy Hays, Khallelah Hasan, Michele Issel, Joan Kub, Sheila Leander, Diane McNaughton, Mary, Molle, Demetrius Porche, Cheri Rector, Pam Schlomann, Jan Schoultz, Catherine Waters. The ACHNE Research Committee has three goals for the 2009-2010 year: (1) Disseminate the 2009 ACHNE Research Priorities; (2) Request, review, select, and recommend funding of proposals for the ACHNE Small Research Grant; (3) Coordinate ACHNE Research preconference for the 2010 Annual Institute. We have made progress on all three goals. The ACHNE 2009 Research Priorities for Public Health Nursing were approved by the ACHNE Board in August 2009 and are available on the ACHNE web site in the Members Only section. The Research Priorities document has been submitted to Public Health Nursing for publication. A plan for broad dissemination of the Research Priorities has been developed and implementation of the plan has begun. The ACHNE Small Research Grant Call for Proposal has been updated to reflect the 2009 Research Priorities. The Call for Proposals will go out in November and will be posted on the ACHNE web site. Proposals will be due on February 1, 2010. The ACHNE Research preconference subcommittee has begun planning the 2010 preconference. The theme is Research Priorities for Nursing: Embracing Diversity. Speakers have been identified. It should be a great preconference.

2010 Annual Institute Planning Committee - Connie Roush ACHNE Committee members: Pamela Levin (08-10, Jean Hill (08-10), Louise Miller (08-10), Penny Weismuller (08-10), Carolyn Mason (09-11), Lisa Goldstein (09-11), Brenda Young (09-11), Evelyn Brooks (09-11), Toni A. The 2010 Joint Meeting with ASTDN will be held June 10-12 at the Sheraton Crystal City Hotel in the Washington D.C. area. The conference theme is Embracing Diversity: Innovations in Education, Policy & Practice. Approximately 65 abstracts were received for presentations at the 2010 AI and will be reviewed by

representatives from both ACHNE and ASTDN. Notifications will be sent soon after the review process is complete. Plans for keynote and plenary sessions are in progress. Potential speakers will come from the Washington, D.C. area. A tentative conference program and registration brochure will be available in early 2010. The conference will offer many opportunities for ACHNE and ASTDN members to network and share their knowledge and experience. Preconference activities will begin on June 10 with an ASTDN Policy Workshop in the morning and an ACHNE Research Workshop in the afternoon. The ACHNE preconference workshop is titled Implementing the ACHNE Research Priorities: Embracing Diversity and will be drawing on ACHNE and D.C. area expertise. The ASTDN Policy Workshop will provide the opportunity for participants to visit with their representatives on Capitol Hill in the afternoon. In response to the many comments and suggestions from 2009 Annual Institute attendees, a Monday post-conference workshop will address Nontraditional Teaching Strategies. All conference workshops and presentations are open to both ACHNE and ASTDN members.

SCHOOL HEALTH SCHOLARSHIPS Thinking of publishing work about school populations? Consider the Journal of School Nursing (JOSN). The JOSN is the official journal of the National Association of School Nurses and is published bimonthly. It is a peer-reviewed publication that provides a forum for advancing school nursing, thus the health of school children. The JOSN publishes scholarship addressing the health of the school community. The JOSN’s focus includes a broad range of issues and problems faced by school nurses and public health nurses. Manuscripts addressing professional and school health services delivery problems are sought as well as manuscripts reporting age or grade specific problems and related interventions. For a more definitive listing of potential topics, see the online call for papers at http://josn.sagepub.com. Check out the manuscript submission guidelines at http://josn.sagepub.com. To submit a manuscript, go to Sage Track http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/josn. The JOSN is also looking for reviewers. Reviewers are asked to critique approximately four manuscripts per year. The reviews focus on the quality of the scholarship and contribution to school health services delivery. To sign up as a reviewer, go to http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/josn. Follow the directions to create a new account as a reviewer. Be sure to select areas of expertise and interest in the pull down menu and save. The key words related to interest serve in the reviewer selection process.
