mark the grand opening of the 57km tunnelwhich is set to begin a full service at theend of the year.A brass band plays at one of thecelebration sites in Rynacht as part of theentertainment, interactive games helpvisitors learn about the tunnel, and thereare food stalls aplenty selling Swiss cheeseand meats.Seventeen years in the making, theworld's longest and deepest railwaytunnel is clearly a cause for celebrationand the patriotic Swiss are relishing theopportunity to honour the 1800 Swissworkers, whose blood, sweat and tearswent into its creation.Dining solo in a cosy wooden restaurant onmy first night in Alpine village Andermatt,which lies on one side of the GotthardPass, I get talking to one of thoseworkers.I helped build that tunnel," says26-year-old Patrick.

lakes, mountains and greenery whentravelling. She lived in Paris for six yearsbut used to dream about the green grass ofSwitzerland.I agree wholeheartedly, as we pass hillsdotted with colourful houses, seeminglybelonging to a fairy-tale world.I'm told to look out for the Baroque churchin Wassen, which can be seen three timesfrom different angles along our way,demonstrating how curving the rail routesare.Usually, I associate transport with rush andstress, but in Switzerland, train journeysare calming and the engines barely make asound. Traditionally a ski village, Andermatt issleepy and quiet in the spring - although inJuly and August, it's full of mountain bikers,hikers and rock climbers.

Wanting to give my legs a stretch. I tackythe hour-long Shollenen circular hikingtrail. I'm out of breath as I meander upand down the rocky path, and my headspins as I peer over the edge of a deep

gorge with water rushing exuberantlybelow.Later in the afternoon, I check out thedandelion-filled golf course walk, new forthis season. The 8.4km stretch takes mearound Andermatt's golf club, opened justa few weeks ago and bringing new interestto the village for locals and tourists alike.There's lots of development taking placehere - the new Chedi hotel is a high-endchalet-style block of apartments locatednext to the train station, which I finda good balance between modern andquaint.But I get the impression local residentsdon't want to attract too many crowds.Right now, there's a real sense ofcommunity with inhabitants congregatingnightly at their favourite pubs and bars.On my final morning, while tucking intodelicious cheese from the region, I sharereflections from my weekend with awaitress at the Hotel Monopol-Metropol,where I've spent a relaxing three nights.She tells me she loves how restfulAndermatt is, but at some point, she willmove hack to a city because she "missesthe sparkle" of city life.I understand what she means, but as Igaze at the dusting of snow high on rockypeaks, I draw a different conclusion.The mountains, lakes and valleys havetheir own special sparkle, which couldeasily keep me here for a few more days.

Construction has now started on Andermatt's newest addition which promises theadvantages of one's own private apartment without giving up exclusive hotel serv-ice. This attractive concept of "hotel serviced apartments" is offered by the newGotthard Residences. Around 100 units - all freehold - are being built in a new, free-standing residence building. Nach zwei Jahren PreOpeningBetrieb wurde am letzten Wochenende der Golfplatz von Andermatt SwissAlps mit der Einsegnung offiziell eröffnet. Nach dem prominent besetzten Eröffnungsturnier vor einerWoche war am Samstag die Bevölkerung an der Reihe: zahlreich leisteten sie der Einladung zum Tag deroffenen Türen Folge und schnupperten Golfluft.

Nach zwei Jahren PreOpeningBetrieb ist der Andermatt Swiss Alps Golf Course jetzt definitiv eröffnet. Der

schottisch anmutende Platz ist über sechs Kilometer lang und entspricht internationalen Turnierstandards.

Konzipiert wurde der Platz vom renommierten Architekten Kurt Rossknecht (D) und gehört zu den attraktivsten

Golfplätzen in den Alpen. In diesem Sommer kann er erstmals unbeschränkt auf einer „Pay and Play“Basis

bespielt werden, wobei die Greenfee für 18Loch je nach Saison und Wochentag zwischen CHF 75 und CHF 160

beträgt.

Am Eröffnungsturnier spielten rund 80 Prominente aus Sport, Politik, Wirtschaft und Gesellschaft, wobei der

OlympiaGoldFlight mit den OlympiaGoldmedaillenGewinnern Didier Défago, Tanja Frieden, Pirmin Zurbriggen

und Donghua Li für viel Aufmerksamkeit sorgte. Die prominenten Gäste von Bernhard Russi und Samih Sawiris

zeigten sich vom Golfplatz und von der Turnierorganisation beeindruckt und kündigten zahlreich ihre Rückkehr

nach Andermatt an.

Am Tag der offenen Türen vom letzten Samstag konnte die Bevölkerung das vom Architekten Kurt Aellen

entworfene und vorgestellte GolfClubhaus ausführlich inspizieren, Testfahrten mit Golfcars absolvieren, auf dem

PuttingGreen das Einlochen und auf der Driving Range das Abschlagen üben, und natürlich im Festzelt auf die

Eröffnung des Golfplatzes anstossen.

Am vergangenenSamstag war nun die Bevölkerung ander Reihe: Zahlreich leisteten die Ein-heimischen der Einladung zum Tag der

offenen Türen Folge und schnuppertenGolfluft.

Die Bevölkerung konnte das vomArchitekten Kurt Aellen entworfene undvorgestellte Golf-Clubhaus ausführlichinspizieren, Testfahrten mit Golfcarsabsolvieren, auf dem Putting Green dasEinlochen und auf der Driving Rangedas Abschlagen üben - und natürlichim Festzelt auf die Eröffnung des Golf-platzes anstossen.
