MOTHERING SUNDAYwas not originally a celebration ofmotherhood. During the sixteenth century, people returned to their "mother church"for a service on the fourth Sunday of Lent.
Anyone who did this was commonly said tohave gone 'a-mothering' and was often theonly time that whole families could gathertogether, due to conflicting working hours.
Another name for this festival is SimnelSunday, due to the practice of baking Simnel cakes to celebrate the reuniting offamilies during the austerity of Lent.
In later times, Mothering Sunday became aday when domestic servants were given aday off to visit their mother and other family members.
Rose Sunday is an alternative title followingthe tradition of distributing posies to allmothers and latterly all women in the congregation.

This March brings Easter. Holy Week starts with Palm Sundayon 24th. Easter Sunday is 31th. We have God’s gift of his sonand the story of resurrection - coming back to life after death. AtEaster time we find faith as we literally see the earth coming backto life.
St David’s Day is the 1st, Mothering Sunday on 10th and StPatrick’s on 17th (so join me in raising a pint of the black stuffon that day!)
You don’t have to be a druid to celebrate on Wednesday 20th! It’sour spring equinox. This is the last day of winter and means fromthen on we have more day than night!
And to make us feel better, we put the clocks forward an houron Easter Sunday. The mornings are lighter, the evenings longer- and then it will really will feel like summer is coming!

Red Nose Day
Friday 15 March
It’s a UK wide fundraising
event organised by Comic Relief every two years. It culminates in a
night of TV madness on BBC One.
Where does the money go?
Thanks to you and the money you raise, thousands of poor and disadvantagedpeople across the UK and Africa are getting the help they need to turn theirlives around. 40% of the money raisedstays here at home and 60% works hard to improve lives in Africa.
Whether it be a woman living down yourstreet who is being abused by her partneror a child struggling to survive on thestreets of Africa, your cash is helping toimprove, and in some cases save, lives.

Beware the Ides of March?
No, it’s just the Roman name for 15thMarch, a festive day dedicated to thegod of Mars. It’s just the day JuliusCaesar was assassinated in 44BC.
March begins in the constellation ofAquarius and ends in Pisces. RomanMarch was called Martius, named afterMars, the Roman god of war.
March was originally the first month ofthe Roman calendar before the wintermonths of January and February wereadded about 700 BC by King NumaPompilius.
The saying “March comes in like a lion, but goes out like a lamb", refers to themove from winter to spring weather.(Spring Equninox on 20th)
March's birthstone is aquamarine forPisces and diamond for Aries. March'sbirth flower is the jonquil.

1st March, St David’s Day
St David of Wales or Dewi Sant wasthought to have been born in the littlecathedral town of St David's.
He became the Abbot of St David's anddied on 1st March 589. A.D. Manymiracles were attributed to him. Onemiracle often recounted is that once whenDewi was preaching to a crowd atLlandewi Brefi those on the outer edgescould not hear, so he spread a handkerchiefon the ground, and stood on it to preach, whereupon the ground rose up beneathhim, and all could hear.
He was buried in St David's Cathedral inPembrokeshire. His holiness was such thatmedieval pilgrims equated two pilgrimagesto St David's were worth one pilgrimageto Rome - a great saving in journeying atthat time!

Saint Patrick’s Day is 17th MarchPatrick was born in Roman Britain and captured byIrish raiders when he was 16.
He was taken as a slave to Ireland, where he lived for six years beforeescaping and returning to hisfamily.
He entered the church, as his fatherand grandfather had before him, becoming a deacon and a bishop. He later returned to Ireland as amissionary, working in the north and west of theisland, and by using Monasteries as the center for hismissionary work had great success in the conversionof Ireland.
By the seventh century he had become a patron saintof Ireland, and the foundations of Irish Christianitywere attributed largely to him.
The largest St. Patrick's Day parade is held in NewYork City and it is watched by 2 million spectators. The St. Patrick's day parade was first held in NewYork City on 17 March 1766 when Irish soldiersmarched through the city.

20th March is Spring Equinox
An equinox in astronomy is the event
when the Sun can be observed
to be directly above the equator.
This gives 12 hours of daytime and 12 hours of night.
It signifies a passing out of winter and is therefore...
‘the first day of spring’.
"The March Hare will be much the most interesting, and perhaps as this is May, it won't be raving mad -- at least not so mad as it was in March."
Mad March Hare, is a character from the tea party scene in Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.
"Mad as a March hare" was a common phrase in Carroll's time.
The saying refers to the hare's behaviour at the beginning of the long breeding season, which lasts from
February to September, when unreceptive females use their forelegs to repel overenthusiastic males.

During the second world war, the mighty German battleshipTirpitz posed a huge treat to shipping in the North Atlanticbringing supplies to Britain. The Tirpitz was so large it it couldonly fit into one dry dock, at St Nazaire in Normandy.
The plan was to ram the dock, which was consideredimpregnable, with HMS Campbeltown. She was packed withan enormous weight of explosives and manned with a chosenRN crew and Commandos. The 18 escort vessels were built of mahogany, had no armourand were laden with extra petrol tanks. What chance did theyhave against a very heavily defended enemy river mouth!611 men set off from Falmouth on the night of 28th March. The lock gates were rammed and commandoes ran throughthe docks, laying explosives. Most of the escort boats weredestroyed and the force were left stranded. Heavilyoutnumbered they tried to fight their way out.
Success was overwhelming. The dock was destroyed and theTirpitz exiled to Norway where it never fired on the enemyagain.
But sadly the cost was high. 163 men were killed, many morewere wounded and most of the remainder taken prisoner.Amazingly 6 soldiers fought their way out and eventuallyreached Gibraltar to rejoin their Units and fight again.
“No fewer that five VCs were won at StNazaire, by far the highest proportion of VCs
ever awarded for a single operation; and this isthe measure of the heroism of all who took
part in that magnificent enterprise”
Admiral of the Fleet Earl Mountbatten

I heard Wilko before I saw him......the raw sound of R’n’B. Chopping, rhythmic, hypnotic. A sound like no other. In September 1976 Dr Feelgood’’s Stupidity, featuring Wilko wentstraight to No 1.One month later the Sex Pistols were recording Never Mind TheBollocks. The world had changed.
In January Wilko was diagnosed with terminal pancreatic cancer andgiven ‘nine or ten’ months to live. He’s chosen not to receivechemotherapy.
He’s got enough time for one last short tour before he’s reunited withhis childhood sweetheart, Irene.
