The new incarnation of Boston Dynamics’ PETMAN robot, being developed for DARPA with Department of Defense funding, not only looks humanbut it also sweats to regulate body temperature.
A new video showing PETMAN in action depicts the robot dressed up in a post-apocalyptic chem-bio suit with sensors embedded to detect hazardouschemicals.
“Decked out in chem-resistant camo and a dystopic gas mask, this robot couldn’t look more human,” writes Jason Dorrier.
When the clothing is removed, the robot looks something like Sonny from the movie I, Robot. PETMAN is self-balancing and can also do push-ups,walk, stretch, and squat.
As you can see from the previous incarnations of PETMAN in the videos below, as the robot’s capabilities increase, so does its resemblance to ahuman being.
That will only serve to increase concerns expressed by numerous robotic experts, that the Pentagon’s fleet of cyborgs is being developed with oneprimary goal in mind – to pursue “suspects” and kill large numbers of people on the future battlefield.
Noel Sharkey, professor of artificial intelligence and robotics at the University of Sheffield, has repeatedly warned that the robots currently beingdeveloped under the auspices of DARPA will eventually be used to kill.
“Of course if it’s used for combat, it would be killing civilians as well as it’s not going to be able to discriminate between civilians and soldiers,” saidSharkey.
Last month, award-winning military writer and former intelligence officer Lt. Col. Douglas Pryer also wrote an essay warning of the threat posed byremorseless “killer robots” that will be used to stalk and slaughter human targets in the near future.
In a 50-page report published last year, Human Rights Watch also warned that artificially intelligent robots let loose on the battlefield wouldinevitably commit war crimes.
Last year, experts at the prestigious University of Cambridge announced a project to conduct research into the “extinction-level risks” posed tohumanity by artificially intelligent robots.
Flying drones that communicate with each other are also being developed for “hunting terrorists” and other “homeland security” purposes, as well asUAVs that could one day snatch humans off the street.

I think they call this waste of money PETMAN because it could be knocked over by a miniature poodle. If not for all of the cables and wires,this thing would just fall over.
Everything Boston Dynamics develops is a piece of crap. It’s amazing that DARPA is giving so much of our tax money to them.

This isn’t something to worry about for a long, long time until someone develops a very compact source of copious amounts of energy no largerthan a backpack — and that is not likely to happen anytime soon since we haven’t yet even figured out an efficient non-petroleum energystorage device for automobiles.
Notice the large cable bundle going to all these humanoid simulators. The mechanics of the machine are a marvel to behold and I wish theyprovided more information on the types of actuators and sensors they use (I used to work in robotics), but it’s nothing without a significantsource of portable power that can be carried around. The power and signal cables attached to these things are the size of a garden hose and therange of these machines will be limited to the length of that cable until a portable energy source capable of powering one of these machines forat least several hours is invented.

If we go too far with this we could have a real life “The Matrix” on our hands. We make robots too intelligent, to have feelings, etc. And ofcourse we’ll be saying, “Oh they’re just robots. Do you remember the movie “Abyss” where she says “They are not like our clunky machines” This technology, while looking good for theexpenditures, is leading no where. This is just clever mechanical engineering, and nothing more.With the black projects in the back room, there is no need for these clunky machines. It reminds me of children trying to make a flying airplaneout of leggos. They want to make them look human? For what? Are thereany batttery technologies being developed that has a very high power to weight ratio. Any nano technolgy that is used a powerful battery on asmall scale?
