Auktionshaus Felzmann – preliminary philately report for 169th auction, 2 to 4 July 2020

Major international auction in Düsseldorf – held live in the auction hall and online simultaneously

Felzmann’s Summer Auction (2 to 4 July 2020) will once again combine two worlds – with some

participants bidding on location in the auction hall and others live on the internet. Felzmann’s vast

experience perfecting this combination has proven its worth extensively, particularly in recent

times, and allows many philately enthusiasts to join in the bidding, even in the event that it is not

possible to hold a hall auction owing to pandemic restrictions. In spite of the difficult conditions in

recent months, the Felzmann team has once again put together a very impressive range of

material with many highlights and with a number of interesting collections being wound up.

The catalogue is shaped in particular by several large inherited collections, some of which have

been wound up while others are to go under the hammer in the form of substantial smaller

collections. First among these is the life’s work of passionate philatelist Dr Hermann-Siegfried

Graf zu Münster (1925-2016), wound up into approximately 100 positions. Having grown up on

the Königsfeld bei Rochlitz manor estate, he put together – based on his family’s aristocratic

correspondence – an impressive collection of material from the Old German States to Germany,

up to and including various European territories. Among this are a few enticing specimens that

have never been available on the philatelic market before.

Similarly, Hans Kleuker entrusted the Düsseldorf-based auction house with the task of auctioning

the collection on the postal history of Hildesheim that won him a gold award at NAPOSTA 2005.

A total of 170 lots spanning the eventful postal history of the city of Hildesheim (in Lower Saxony)

will be auctioned with covers from postal messaging in the 16th and 17th century up until the

German Empire.

It will certainly be worth your while to take a look in the catalogue. Zeppelin mail rarities such as a

letter from the 1931 Egypt Flight with a SUEZ stamp (Lot 3082) or the 1931 Polar Flight “without

a hyphen” (Lot 3090). Choice material from Europe includes Austria with a bisected 6-krone

stamp (Lot 3736) or an early Romanian telegram receipt with a TOULTCHA negative hand stamp

from 1866 (Lot 3795). A particularly fine specimen of the “Basel Dove” with a sheet margin (Lot

3803) is for sale, as is the rare Bavarian mixed franking 3 kreuzer blue with 6 kreuzer brown on a

well preserved folded letter (Lot 3845). Other highlights of a very strong Old German States

section include classics such as the “Sachsendreier” vertical pair (Lot 4146) or a three-colour

franking on an attractive envelope (Lot 4162).

While the German Empire section features, in exceptional MNH condition, a 1¼ mark Germania

in a rare colour variant (Lot 4349), the German post offices abroad and colonies in China section

offers a diagonal overprint 3 pfennig crown/eagle with a genuine cancel, one of the rarest colonial

stamps in perfectly preserved condition (Lot 4628) – and also, among other things, Kiautschou’s

second Tsingtau provisional issue on a highly attractive picture postcard (Lot 4732). An example

of the post-war period material on offer is the hand overprinted stamp TAURA without a district

number and on a recently certified package card (Lot 5246).

The single lots will be auctioned in Felzmann’s own offices (Immermannstr. 51), while the

collection auction on Saturday, 4 July, will be held in Hotel Nikko (Immermannstr. 41). In addition,

Auktionshaus Felzmann’s coin auction will be held on 30 June and 1 July. Here, a wide range of

coins from antiquity to the modern day will be presented in a total of 2,700 lots, together with
