be a part of it!The very best of Canada’s women curlers are bound for Victoria to compete for national glory at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts.

It’s a showcase of athletic excellence, in an environment unique to the roaring game. More than simply a competition, the Scotties is a celebration of skill, strategy, culture and entertainment.

The only way to truly appreciate the experience is from your seat in the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre. You’ll be surrounded by thousands of flag-waving fans from across the land sporting home province colours. They’ll be chanting and singing until the crucial shot’s on the line. In an instant the building will fall silent… and in a heartbeat erupt in an electrifying roar.

Then the crowd will rise, almost as one, and move to the HeartStop Lounge for between-draw refreshments, entertainment - and often a chance to cheer with competitors they’ve just cheered. Championship curling is a wondrous world with a character of its own!

Watching on television is one thing – but the true sense of excitement comes with being part of it. And, unlike many major sporting events, the Scotties is affordable for the entire family.

For so many people, the first time leaves a lasting impression. “I remember when I was a little girl, I got to see the Scotties live and it was one of the most amazing experiences of my life,” recalls Jennifer Jones. “It was a moment of a lifetime for me… and now we’re world champions.”

So many high performance athletes experience feelings of withdrawal once the decision is finally made to leave the limelight of competition. But for Victoria’s Julie Skinner – former Scotties champion and Olympic medalist – the transition has come with few regrets.

“I don’t actually miss the curling part, or being away from my family so much,” says Skinner. “But I do miss being with my teammates… we had such a great time together, both on and off the ice.”

The former third for B.C.’s Kelly Law has found a way to stay in touch with the sport, serving as Vice Chair of Hosting for the 2009 Scotties Tournament of Hearts. It brings a new insight to the challenges of competition and an opportunity to give back to the game she feels has given her so much.

“I’d played in so many Scotties but had no experience whatsoever as a volunteer or working with an organizing committee. I’ve always had an appreciation for all the volunteers but you never really know what goes on behind the scenes until you actually do it yourself - it’s been a bit of an eye opener for me! “

As for the state of women’s curling in Canada, Skinner is impressed with the high level of play and fitness of the competitors. “I attended the final few games of the Scotties in Regina last year and those were some of the best played games I’ve seen in a while. Having said that, it would be nice to see some new young teams break through.”

Even before the first rock of the season slides over the pebble, every competitive curler in the country has their eyes fixed on one elusive goal – a berth in the Scotties Tournament of Hearts. It represents the pinnacle of Canadian women’s curling, encompassing an elite field of the best in the sport.

As the quest for the Hearts begins, only four women head back to the ice each year secure in the knowledge their tickets to the big show have already been booked.

In a format unique to the Scotties, along with the championship honours comes an automatic berth in the next year’s event competing as Team Canada. In 2009, Manitoba’s Jennifer Jones, Cathy Overton-Clapham, Jill Officer and Dawn Askin will march into the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre in Victoria February 21 wearing the coveted maple leaf.

The 2008 Scotties marked the second title for Jones, once again showcasing her unquestionable flair for the dramatics. Avid curling fans will likely never forget the spectacular, seemingly impossible last rock “in-off” to seal victory in 2005. It has since become commonly known in curling vernacular as “the shot”.

Last year’s sequel to the Jones version of mission impossible followed a different script, but one that proved nonetheless exciting. After a sluggish start to the week the Manitoba foursome appeared to be headed for an early exit from the playoff picture. But on the Tuesday of the round-robin they gathered their composure and started to catch the competitive spark.

“We got on a bit of a roll on Tuesday and got better as the week went on,” is how third Overton-Clapham described the team’s march to the victory podium. In fact, that ‘bit of a roll’ stands as the greatest comeback in the history of Canadian women’s championship curling. The Manitobans finished out the Scotties with an eight game winning streak culminating in a final-end steal to defeat Alberta’s Shannon Kleibrink.

In a jubilant post game interview, an emotional Jones described her feelings in one word – “speechless”. She gathered herself to comment… “we got our backs against the wall earlier in the week but the girls just played great.”

“We peaked at the right time,” said Jones. “We just kept getting better – we played our best when we needed to and that says something about our team that I’m just really proud of!”

As for the distinction of donning Canada’s colours? “Wow! It’s amazing – to be Team Canada is the thrill of the lifetime, something a lot of people don’t get to experience.”

“Wow! It’s amazing.”

4

Page 5: Prevue Magazine - 2009 Scotties Tournament of Hearts

The road to the Scotties Tournament of Hearts - and the right to hoist the championship trophy – is a journey characterized by personal dedication, a commitment to intense training and a competitive drive for thousands of curlers across our provinces and territories.

“Obviously training is important in any sport and our team is really focused on ways to try to improve and get better,” says Jones. “You know, it’s the ultimate goal we’re going for and you don’t want to leave anything unturned and have any regrets at the end.”

The prestige of the Scotties Tournament of Hearts is accentuated in 2009. The championship title already means the right to represent Canada at the Ford World Women’s Curling Championship and a return visit to the 2010 Scotties. But this year’s winner is also awarded a berth in the Tim Hortons Roar of the Rings (Canadian Men’s and Women’s Curling Trials) in Edmonton December 6 - 13.

On the merits of her 2008 Scotties victory, Jones has the comfort of being the first team to capture one of the eight cherished spots available to the best of Canada’s women curlers. And she is well aware of just how much is at stake for each of her peers.

“I don’t think it gets any better than to represent Canada… to put that maple leaf on your back and to stand out there with the pride of your country behind you, it’s beyond words really and I wish everyone could experience what that feeling is like.”

Every curler in the country is focused on posting a personal best at the Victoria Scotties. The higher the finish, the closer they’ll move to the ultimate experience in athletics – the golden opportunity to stand atop the podium as Team Canada on the biggest stage of all.

“I don’t think it gets any better than to represent Canada.”

A Dream Yearfor CurlingThe dream of competing in the Olympic Games is a compelling force for athletes around the world. In the curling fraternity, only a select few have seen the dream come true.

“For sure there is a different feeling competing at the Olympics,” Shannon Kleibrink describes the experience of leading her Alberta team to the height of athletic excellence in Torino, Italy at the 2006 games. “Once you are Team Canada you are competing for the whole nation – and the support you receive is unbelievable!”

But there’s unfinished business for the Kleibrink team – bronze medal winners in Torino - and the competitive flame still burns bright. “I think our drive to get back is stronger now that we’ve been there once… particularly because we didn’t win gold in 2006. To have a second chance would be amazing.”

Well aware they’re not the only team with gold in their eyes, she points out the rising stakes are apparent in the overall level of competition. “I think there has been a more intense attitude and environment ever since curling became an Olympic sport. For sure teams are more serious because every event is worth qualifying points.”

Kleibrink views the Scotties Tournament of Hearts as one of the most prestigious competitions of the year. “The Scotties is the premiere curling event in Canada… when you win the right to participate, you’ve made it to the big show!”

Throughout the next year the pressure of competition will be intense. Champions will be crowned at the Scotties, Roar of the Rings and Olympics, taking their place in curling history. So what comes next for Canada’s elite curlers? The Kleibrink team has one more prize in mind. “When this is all over we’re going to some small town spiel to play for a toaster… just like the good old days!”

“The support youreceive isunbelievable!”

up closeand personalIn most sports fans cheer from the stands, watch on television or track scores online. Any opportunities to meet the athletes, or even see them up close, are extremely rare.

Well, curling isn’t most sports! In our game it’s personal. Competitors and fans share a unique relationship. There’s no special pass to get near the stars – a ticket to the Scotties Tournament of Hearts will do just fine.

What makes curling so different? “I think fans can relate to curlers because we are everyday people,” says Team Canada’s Jennifer Jones. “We have families, we have kids, we have careers and we curl because we love it and have a passion for it.”

It’s a classic case of mutual admiration. “We feel like they’re friends,” adds Jones, the defending world champion. “They feel like they’re part of our lives and they get to understand what we’re thinking on the ice… that’s unique to curling and what I think sets us apart from other sports.”

You can share a more personal side of 2009 Scotties competitors, past champions and other luminaries of the game at the Up Close and Personal interview sessions. It’s a casual environment where you can even ask your own questions. For a taste of Up Close and Personal go online to seasonofchampions.ca/rotr/ for a candid discussion with Jennifer Jones and Kevin Martin.

Welcome to curling, where close and personal is the nature of the game!

“The fans are a part of our lives, and they get to understand what we’re thinking.”

stories from around the curling world.

View from the BoothOver the years, the TSN broadcast booth has become one of the mainstays of Season of Champions events across the country. Equally recognizable are its amiable occupants – Vic Rauter, Ray Turnbull and Linda Moore – who will be on the scene for every draw during Victoria’s Scotties Tournament of Hearts.

“2009 is a very exciting year as we cover all of the Season of Champions events on TSN,” says Moore. “We are very pleased to cover the events right through the finals – and it will be wonderful to tell the final chapter of the story about the teams we have become so attached to from round robin play.”

The TSN broadcast trio has garnered a large and loyal audience of fans with the warm, knowledgeable and entertaining style they bring to the coverage of Canada’s major curling championships. Moore attributes the success to a lot of pre-draw preparation and “the best crew in the world”.

“Our ‘team’ looks for every way to showcase the curlers and event. Vic, Ray and I are pleased to add our commentary to the great pictures captured by the crew. It’s a privilege to welcome the fans and viewers into our analysis and conversation. I’m very lucky to work with Ray and Vic – we’re like family and have so much fun!”

“One thing that is very special about curling is the friendliness of the participants. That’s the bonus of getting out to the venue and seeing a game in person - you see the sights and sounds up close and get a chance to chat with provincial, national and world champions. That accessibility - unlike anything you would have experienced with any other sport – is wonderful for the fans, and really helps us deliver great information to the viewers.”

And for Moore, the Scotties is clearly a highlight of the season. “As a past Scotties participant, I can’t wait each year for the event to arrive – it’s a fantastic week!”

Welcome to Party CentralWhat’s the secret to bringing together more than a thousand people, most of them complete strangers from every part of our country, and turning it into a celebration of a lifetime?

“I approach it as a massive house party,” explains Stuart Brown, MC for the Scotties HeartStop Lounge since 2002. “I’m the host and everyone coming through the door is a guest. It’s up to me – along with the producer, sound & lighting company and talent – to give them a lasting impression.”

The experience is an eye-opener for the thousands of fans who convene each day of the Scotties to sample the food, refreshments and live entertainment, and share the sense of companionship imbedded so deeply in the culture of curling. “It’s a free flowing spirit that envelops the audience,” says Brown.

“Anything, and sometimes everything, can happen!”

The spotlight shines on the main stage with a lineup of high-calibre performers, carefully selected to appeal to wide ranging tastes. Between sets, it’s the MC’s role to fire up the energy of the crowd with off-the-cuff games, competitions and pure and simple fun.

Linda Moore- TSN

14

Page 15: Prevue Magazine - 2009 Scotties Tournament of Hearts

“We’ve done games like Beer Factor and Scotties Idol. We try to integrate the audience into the act. We have what we call the walk-about – going into the audience and chatting with people, getting them to tell a joke or run around the room waving a flag. And there’s plenty of prizes – the bigger the request, the bigger the prize.”

“The bottom line is it’s a fun-filled, definitely unpredictable party. People should come to the HeartStop Lounge with the idea of enjoying the entertainment – and, they may even become the entertainment themselves!”

“We start off the day after the first draw with a relatively tame lunch time. After the second draw we turn it up a bit. And after the third draw of the day,.. well, prepare to kick off your shoes!”

Stuart Brown- Blessing the Crowd
