ICF GLOBAL COACHING STUDY The International Coach Federation releases findings of global study

in celebration of International Coaching Week, February 4-10.

Lexington, Kentucky, USA - Results of the first-ever global survey of coaches demonstrate how the young profession of coaching has gained a strong foothold in the marketplace and now contributes more than $1.5 billion (USD) to the global economy.

The International Coach Federation (ICF) commissioned independent research firm PricewaterhouseCoopers to conduct this groundbreaking study of coaches worldwide in order to evaluate the magnitude of the coaching profession.

From September to December 2006, nearly 6,000 coaches (both ICF members and non-members) in 74 countries were surveyed on their coaching practice and client demographic information, as well as revenue details.

The highlights of the survey findings include:

• The approximate annual worldwide revenue produced by coaching is $1.5 billion (USD).

• Full- and part-time coaches earn an average of $50,510 (USD) per year. Full-time coaches earn an average of $82,671 (USD) per year, and part-time coaches earn an average of $26,150 (USD) per year.

• 69% percent of coaches are female.

• The average coach is 46-55 years old, has coached for 5-10 years, and 53 percent of coaches have acquired an advanced level of education (i.e., Master's Degree or PhD).

• The majority of coaches maintain 11 active clients at any given time.

• Coaching clients tend to be 56 percent female/44 percent male, and between 38 and 45 years of age.

Background:

• ICF commissioned independent research firm, PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP, to conduct a comprehensive global study on coaching.

Methodology:

• The survey launched on September 22, 2006 and ran through December 5, 2006.

• The survey was made available in seven languages. The e-survey was available in English. A downloadable copy of the survey was also available in Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Russian and Spanish.

• Each coach was e-mailed a unique survey so that each coach could only respond once.

• The survey was sent to a total valid sample of 20,845 coaches. 5,415 coaches completed the survey for a 26% response rate.

• Non-ICF members were also invited to participate in the survey by signing up at the PricewaterhouseCoopers Web site. The valid sample received from the registration site was 2,689, and of that, 1,140 coaches completed the survey.

• Survey responses were received from 74 countries. Findings: The initial highlights of the survey findings include:

• Country specific information is available for Australia, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Ireland, Norway, South Africa, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom, United States, and New Zealand.

Next Steps

• The key results are being released to the media, members and the industry during International Coaching Week, February 4-10. The information is also being released to Chapter so that they can use it in their local areas.

• If a media representative wants an official ICF perspective on the information, we're asking that the request be funneled through ICF Headquarters. However, Board members and Chapters are being encouraged to use the information to speak to media in their area providing them with a local coach perspective.

• A copy of the Executive Summary is being written by PricewaterhouseCoopers and will be e-mailed to all coaches who participated in the survey. It will be made available to others from the ICF Web site, www.coachfederation.org.

• The remaining survey results will be released throughout 2007. These will include a more in-depth look at the profile of a coach, profile of the client, issues facing the profession, credentialed compared to non-credentialed coaches, etc.
