Since coming together more than 26 years ago, the citizens who make up the Prichard Committee for Academic Excellence have focused on a single mission: to advocate for vastly improved Kentucky schools. Our ground troops, comprising corporate and civic volunteers from across the Commonwealth and political spectrum, have much to show for their dedication. Among some recent achievements:

♦ Kentucky-specific economic research showing that each $1 invested in quality early childhood yields a return of $5 for citizens and the state as a whole. This important evidence of benefits is part of our campaign on behalf of making voluntary pre-kindergarten available to every Kentucky 3-and 4-year old.

♦ Collaborative work involving organizations representing teachers, business leaders, administrators and policymakers that resulted in consensus around improving the way schools hire, induct, assign, train, support and compensate teachers. This work strengthens Kentucky’s position in the competition for federal Race to the Top dollars.

♦ An interim transition index providing schools and the public with information on student achievement while work is under way to develop new standards and assessments for measuring academic progress.

♦ 55 parent advocates to develop specific school-based projects to enhance student achievement in science, math, engineering and technology. This is in addition to the 1,500 parents already trained since 1997 by our signature parent leadership program, the Commonwealth Institute for Parent Leadership.

The value of this type of work is often long-term and, as a result, is not immediately obvious. That’s why it is heartening that in an especially difficult economic year, the Prichard Committee’s friends again came through. The hundreds of people and organizations listed in these pages reflect the value that Kentuckians place on a high-quality education and the Prichard Committee’s unique role in helping the state achieve that vision.

While this annual fundraising report serves as a token of our gratitude, we hope you’ll agree that the deeper expression of our appreciation comes in our unwavering commitment to make your investment pay lasting dividends for Kentucky’s children.

These are just a few of the comments submitted to the Prichard Committee in response to our “Honor an Educator” initiative. They underscore what we have long believed: Teachers and other educators matter a great deal in the lives of Kentuckians. Those listed here were honored with a gift to the Prichard Committee by people they inspired. For more information on the Honor an Educator program, contact Rachel Belin at (859) 233-9849, extension 233.
