As we approach the end of another week, I hope everyone continues to be safe and well. There are clearly lots of talks about a phased return to school possibly after half term. I wish I could write more to tell you what the plan is going to be but unfortunately like you, I am awaiting further guidance from the government. Please know that as teachers we are all very keen to get back in school as soon as is possible and that once we have been given a green light to put plans in place, we will write and share those plans with you. Until then we continue to do our best to keep learning, being active and staying safe at home. The more learning and support that can be given at home, the easier it will be for our teachers to hit the ground running when we do return.

Our BRIDGES focus for next week is ‘resourcefulness’ which comprises of ten dispositions: questioning, remembering, imitating, making connections, transferring, adaptability and flexibility, reasoning, scavenging and recycling. Whilst each and everyone of the dispositions are equally important, the one that struck me the most given our current situation were around ‘making connections’. It has been heart-warming seeing the lovely ways in which families have been connecting with each other at home and having ‘bake offs, quizzes and putting class collages together etc. Everyone is having to connect in a different way with family, friends and colleagues. I hope in some small way our newsletter helps us to all feel connected too.

From Tam Broadway – Primary Headteacher

I then thought about ‘transferring’ and how we are all having to use the skills and knowledge we already have and apply them in a different way to adapt to the situation. I have been very impressed particularly with Ms West and Ms Chaggar as they have begun finding new and innovative ways of connecting with our new families that will join us in September and creating online tools and presentations for our families to access as well as setting up virtual home visits! Thinking about what makes our transition process work well and then how this can be applied online. Using our existing skills and applying them to new situations is a very important skill. I hope everyone will try hard to use their resourcefulness dispositions in a positive way next week!!

On behalf of all the Primary staff we would like to thank you for your continued support!

Science WeekDuring the week of 11th May, we are going to all be participating in our annual ‘Science Week’! Now… this year, it will look slightly different as we won’t be in

school. However, that certainly won’t stop us all from delving into the wonderful world of science from the comfort of our own homes!

We want you to continue to explore how the world works by carrying out lots of interesting experiments at home. There are so many different experiments that

you can do using items that you’ll find within your own homes.

Competition time!To encourage you to engage in lots of fun scientific experiments at home – we are running a competition. As always, there will of course be prizes for those who put

in the most effort and are the most innovative!

Your entry needs to be something that you can send to us via email. You may wish to send us a video, or perhaps some pictures, or even a PowerPoint.

Whichever way you choose to present your learning, make sure that it is presented clearly so that we are able to accurately judge the entries!

Please send all entries to the info@year3 address on the website!!

Here are some websites for inspiration on what you can do at home:

https://www.fizzicseducation.com.au/category/150-science-experiments/

https://www.kidspot.com.au/things-to-do/collection/science-experiments

We hope that you are all looking forward to Science Week, and we can’t wait to see your brilliant ideas!

A huge well done to all of you for keeping up your amazing learning at home!

Creative WritingExhausted, Bron worked all day, just as he always did.He kept the fire in the forge burning, feeding it with charcoal. Determined, he knew he had to complete the chores.

Diligent and responsible, every day Bron checked the pigs and chickens, and made the midday meal: bread and salted fish. Bron was not allowed to rest until sunset. Aching, he knelt beside the forge working to finish the scythe blade by sharpening it on the sandstone.

Trying to heave himself up, he was hit by an even harder blow, which nearly knocked him out cold. Using the last of his strength, he managed pull off his master and break free. The three men chased him for a while. How long? he didn't know because he didn't dare look back. When he was not looking, he ran straight into a treeand fell down Master had caught up he was caught, what was he going to do?...

So terrifying you can scream with terrorShe was in a big, dark forestOn her own tied up to a tree

She cannot get out.

Only grendel was thereShe was about to be eaten

She sees grendel dripping with slimeReady to eat her.

She was speechlessShe muttered as he opened his mouth

She screamed she could not look at himShe was so scared she wished her family and friends were with her.

The feelings she felt as she shook with fearThoughts were running in her headAs she remembered all the times

She cried and cried and cried.

Tears kept rolling down her faceHow she wished

She can see her parents faces once againShe wanted to say goodbye.

And tell them how much she loved them so

She closed her eyes wishing she could go back home.

BRIDGES in the Primary Phase“We build too many walls and not enough bridges.”

Isaac Newton

BRIDGES are habits of mind or learning characteristics that develop a pupil's character and learning power and enable him/her to grow into a well-rounded individual and resilient learner.

There are seven BRIDGES habits that we will be working on, which will rotate on a weekly cycle throughout the year. The BRIDGES habit of the week will always be in-troduced at the beginning of the week during the Monday assembly and reinforced throughout the week across the curriculum. Each class teacher will award a certifi-cate to a pupil that they feel has demonstrated the BRIDGES focus for the week.

Each week we will update you on the BRIDGES habit that will be introduced in the coming week and offer some top tips on how to reinforce the habit at home too. Please also refer to the Primary BRIDGES wheel below.

At School • It is important that the pupils are able to use and remember their vast phonics,

spelling and vocabulary knowledge and apply this information when beginning to write independently. The children imitate familiar stories and characters they know and apply these to their own stories.

• As adults we are acutely aware that we model behaviours for the pupils every day during lunchtime when we eat with our knife and fork or avoid talking when our mouth is full, wash our hands, consider how we dress and present ourselves, how we speak to each other; knowing that the children will imitate the behaviour they see.

• As well as being able to read the sounds and words on pages, the pupils now need to be able to question, reason and comprehend the text they read and explain what is happening and explain their ideas.

• In Maths the children need to apply and transfer their knowledge to different problems and also give reason for the way they have worked out the answers.

• Every classroom has a recycling bin which we encourage the children to use and we also look at how we can use materials around us to incorporate them in pieces of art or other areas of our work before we throw things away.

At Home• Encourage your child to use items around the house to create a piece of art or make junk

models and re-cycle as many items as possible. Ask questions: What could we use this box for instead of throwing it away? Do you think we could make a car, boat or castle from this large box we have? How can we use some of the things we have around the home and turn them into something more useful?

• When your child finds reading a word difficult or a maths question challenging, ask them to remember and use the things they do know and apply it to the new word or challenge. Ask your child lots of questions when you listening to them read at home – some obvious to find answers but also so more tricky questions e.g. Why do you think …? Why did the character …? How do you know…?

• Encourage your child to use their spelling and vocabulary knowledge to extend the level of interest in their writing. Get them to use familiar story characters, settings or plots to base their own stories upon. Perhaps they could scavenge interesting words from stories they read and create their own ‘interesting word dictionary’ to use whenever they are writing independently at home.

• Remind your child that it is important to adapt their behaviour according to the occasion or place, as parents you will of course role-model how to behave and encourage imitation.

Safeguarding ChildrenAs part of their curriculum, the children learn how to keep themselves safe. The following website has been set up by the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC) to offer parents and schools advice on how to raise safeguarding awareness with children. There is a notable section called ‘The Underwear Rule’ which is of particular support and guidance to parents. The website also offers advice regarding ‘online safety’ and how to obtain support or advice regarding the safeguarding of children.
