Spooktacular Halloween Fun atGibside All Half Term

This is Bonnie here, Queen Bee of The Alnwick Garden. Now is an exciting time of year in the garden because allthe fruits and vegetables are ready to harvest – they arenow as big and ripe as they can get and are ready to bepicked.

As part of our Roots and Shoots Project here at TheAlnwick Garden, lucky schoolchildren grow lots of lovelyfruit and vegetables in the Roots and Shoots Garden withthe help of some very clever gardeners. During the lastcouple of weeks, those children have visited us to dig uptheir fruits and vegetables and have made them into tasty, healthy meals!

If you have been growing vegetables at home, your carrots, onions and parsnips will soon be ready for you to pick andeat too! Vegetables are good for you, but they are alsogreat for us – many vegetables supply us with pollen, whichwe use to feed our young bees. This means that if you startto grow fruits and vegetables, you’ll be making us healthiertoo!

Now is still a good time to plant other flowering plants forbees. Plants such as asters and sedums look beautiful in theautumn and we love them because they provide us withnectar even during the chilly autumn months. Plantingthese flowers now also gives time for the roots to settle inwhile the soil is still warm – this means that they have ahead start when it comes to the spring.

Thank you for helping us, don’t forget to talk to your ownbees if you see them in the garden!

Bonnie.
