Happy February Everyone! Many of our students are getting involved outside of the classroom. Thank you to all of our teacher sponsors who continue to give of their time to clubs and sports team. We are offering choir, dance, construction, knitting, chess, leadership - all as lunch hour clubs. Please encourage your children to participate! Joining a club or sports team is a great way to show leadership. Thank you so much to staff sponsors - Mrs. Schweers, Ms. Johnsen, Ms. Payjack, Mrs. Briscoe, and Mrs. Martone.
Boys and Girls Basketball is now underway. Thank you to our coaches Ms. Payjack, Ms. Gaba, Mr. Schweers and Mrs. Martone. Games are played after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
As the rain sets in, we continue to remind you to please send a change of clothes to school. We try to have students outside as much as possible at recess and lunch. There will be times when extreme weather will call for a double bell inside day. However, we appreciate your support by sending extra clothes.
Morning and afterschool drop-off continue to be busy and congested around the front of the school. Please be mindful of the school speed zone and please slow down.
We just completed our very successful Literacy Week! Each class partici-pated well. We enjoyed guest readers, trivia, matching games, read-a-louds, bingo and a scavenger hunt.
On February 9th, we will be showing our Seven Habits video to any interest-ed parents at our coffee and conversation in the Library at 9 am. Everyone is welcome.
Please continue to drop by the office if you have any questions or concerns. Warm regards, Lisa

Congratulations also to Grace L. for receiving the Stepping Up award for the month of November and Mackenzie B. for the month of December. You have both shown improvement in all areas and we are proud of you both of you for all of your hard work. Keep it up! The Grade 6/7 Girls and Boys Basketball Teams are now underway. During the week of January 25-29, 2016, Stoney Creek was busy celebrating “Family Literacy
Week”. From Reader’s Theatre performances to guest readers, from home bingo to buddy liter-
acy activities, we had a wonderful time sharing our love of literacy. We hope that you continue
your love of literacy throughout the entire school year, at home and at school! Thank you to all
of the teachers who helped plan this event!
On Tuesday, Jan 19th & 26th we were pleased to have Cliff Avenue Soccer come and teach our primary students some cool soccer drills and skills. Thank you to Kevin and Noah from Cliff Avenue who came and coached our classes.
Over the Christmas holidays we were able to support many families with food hampers. Thank
you to Burnaby Firefighters, Cameray Child and Family Services, The Burnaby Optimists,
Creekside Youth Centre, and the Stoney Creek Community Council for generously donating
funds to make this happen. It is so heartwarming to know that our community members take
care of each other.

Stoney Creek Community School’s Guest Readers: Justine Henderson (Burnaby Parks and Rec), Chris Gailus (Global TV), Paul Lang (Fun Rec Manager), Vince Kwong (Creekside Youth Centre), Matt Sheeran and Stephen Ryan (SFU Hockey), Laurie Molstad (past Stoney Creek Head Teacher), Peter Dubinsky (Director, Burnaby School Board and past Stoney Creek Principal), Mr. Schweers (Boys Basketball Coach), Christy Redmond (past Stoney Creek Head Teacher) and Bruce Cornell (Lyndhurst Vice Principal).
The students, staff and community had a blast celebrating Family Literacy Week at Stoney Creek. During the week of January 25—29th, we filled our days with literacy-based fun. We started off with a dramatic reader's theatre presentation of "A Fine, Fine School" at our COL assembly which then led into teacher-swap reading on Monday, guest readers on Wednesday, an outdoor treasure hunt on Thursday and dress up as your favourite character day on Friday! All week long we also had a "Staff Picks" book contest running, as well as a staff read aloud each day during the morning announcements. Thank you also for all of your support at home through participating in the home bingo activities. We hope that you continue making literacy fun throughout the rest of the year.

“Stoney Creek Community Council were treated to a Film Premier on January 20th! The Council
members got a first look at “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People”, a new short film made by the
students and staff at Stoney Creek. The film was introduced by Javin, Claire and Aidan who did
an awesome job of explaining why the 7 Habits are important to them, and to the school. They all
spoke so confidently and it was clear that they understood the Habits very well – thank you and
congratulations to Javin, Claire and Aidan, and all those who took part in front of the camera and
behind the scenes. We are so proud of our school, our students, our staff and our community and
we know this video is going to inspire others to try following the 7 Habits and your great example
of leadership.”
