OUT OF FIELD TEACHERS

Consistent student attendance is critical to academic success. As adults, we already know the importance of being in school. Students being in class each and every day to receive direct instruc-tion from their teacher and be actively engaged in guided learning activities with their peers has the biggest positive impact on their learning. In order to issue credit for course completion, the Department of Education has requirements regard-ing time in class. In alignment with those expectations, The School District of Lee County’s attendance policy provides that students who miss a class more than 9 times in a semester, may be in danger of losing credit. With only 90 days in a se-mester, on a block schedule, each class only meets 45 times. Students absent more than 9 times represents missing in excess of 20% of the class. A great conversation to have with students is that in the work force, for most of us, missing more than 20% of our days on the job would be grounds to lose our job. With school dismissal occurring at 1:35 p.m., please try to schedule any appointments after that time. If an absence is unavoidable due to illness, a medical appointment, court, or family loss, please provide Student Services with documentation of that absence (either directly to that office or via e-mail [email protected]) upon the first day back to school. Over the summer, we received our 2018-2019 school grade data that resulted in a repeat grade of an “A”. After a year of intense progress monitoring, collaborative teacher planning and implementation of differentiated instructional strategies, I am pleased to report that our overall score increased by 27 points (from 635 up to 662). We had the second highest number of points for all public high schools in Lee Coun-ty, tied for the highest point gains and were only one of 2 high schools that earned an “A.” Our School Improvement goals this year will be geared directly toward in-creasing Algebra 1 proficiency and Reading/Writing gains of our incoming fresh-men. While district wide, our data is already comparatively good, we will have two additional goals to reduce the number of In School suspensions and number of stu-dents who are chronically absent. AICE and ARTS are THRIVING at North. We received more applications than ever before and have experienced growth in every program. It is going to be an exciting year to watch our kids as they continue to ma-ture and refine their skills and passions. Opportunities for students to get involved in athletics and/or activities are as plentiful as ever. With 26 athletic teams and over 40 clubs/organizations, there is truly something for everyone. Please encourage your North High student to get involved and become a part of our rich history. Thank you to all of our parents and business partners for your ongoing support. To-gether we will continue to strengthen the lives of our students and the future of our community. It’s going to be a great year! Once a Red Knight, Always a Red Knight! Mrs. Diggs, principal

ELECTIONS

Officials from the Lee County Supervisor of Elections Office presented a Voter Registration Program at North Fort Myers High School on September 10 and 11. Students learned much about the history and importance of voting in the United States from four dedicated officials, including Artemis Kahl, Melvia Zei-gler, Juan Diez, and Raymond DeLeon. Following the information portion of the program, these officials registered to vote students from Mrs. Sally Kilic's and Mr. Mark Forconi's Government classes. "Our North High students are eagerly anticipating their ability to exercise one of their most important rights as American citizens in next year's elections," stated Mrs. Kilic. "Our students realize that voting is a true passage to adult-hood and a major responsibility of citizens to ensure the continuance of our democratic form of government," added Mr. Forconi. A few more voter registration presentations are scheduled for North High in the coming months. However, we need more teachers to request the program presentation for their classes so that we can win the High School Voter Regis-tration Challenge this year. Any teachers who would like to arrange for guest speakers in their classrooms should contact Voter Registration Program Liai-son Sally Kilic via her North High email address. Any high school student-athlete who hopes to continue participating in col-lege athletics, needs to register with either the NCAA or the NAIA or both. Once the student does so, then the school can upload academic transcripts for evaluation. The student will need to be sure to send their ACT and/or SAT Scores to the NCAA or NAIA when they take the test (or pay an extra fee after taking the test). Both items will be needed for the NCAA or NAIA to deter-mine if a college may recruit a student athlete for their school and offer any scholarship opportunities connected with athletic participation. Since 1958, our Regional Science & Engineering Fair (RSEF) program challenges thousands of students from across Southwest Florida to go beyond their classroom studies and pursue independent project-based research. Students work independently or in teams to address questions in the fields of Computer Science, Environmental Science, Medicine & Health, Chemistry, Biology, and a half dozen other categories.

The Thomas Alva Edison Kiwanis Regional Science & Engineering Fair (RSEF) is an affiliate of the Society for Science & the Public, and

selects projects which go on to compete in other state and national competitions, including the prestigious Florida State Science & Engineering Fair (Florida SSEF) and the Intel International Science & Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF). But whether or not a student wins, every student is celebrated and encouraged by the hundreds of other attending students, parents, teachers, mentors, sponsors, judges, and members of the public.

REGIONAL COMPETITION LEVEL:

The 2020 Thomas Alva Edison Kiwanis Regional Science & Engineering Fair will be held on Saturday January 18th, 2020 at Alico Arena, Florida Gulf Coast University, Fort Myers, Florida.

Students will present in Junior (6th – 8th grade) and Senior (9th – 12th grade) Divisions in multiple areas of study. Fair participants are drawn from public, private, parochial and home-schools in Charlotte and Lee Counties. The Awards Ceremony will be at Alico Arena, Florida Gulf Coast University the following week usually at 7:00 PM.

HEADLINE

BOEING BOEING A hit comedy of merry misadventures and mistaken identities, Boeing Boeing tells the exploits of French bachelor Bernard and his lovely female flight attend-ants. Three flight attendants, to be exact, from three different countries: and they all believe they’re en-gaged to Bernard! In the past, Bernard has been able to juggle these women due to his detailed timetable of his fiancés’ flight schedules. When the situation changes and all of the women end up at his apartment on the same day, Bernard (with help from his bewil-dered friend Robert) struggles to keep them from learning the truth. Will the lying lothario be able to keep up this charade, or will a disaster occur? As they say: all’s well that ends well! Shows are Oct. 11-12 7:00pm and Oct. 13 2:00pm. Tickets are $5 students $10 adults. Main Cast: Bernard………………………………… Dylan Sneddon Robert………………………………….. Harvey Evans Berthe…………………………………..
